Topic
Speed Control of Three Phase Induction Motor using

variable frequency drive (VFD)

And Its Applications

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Variable Frequency Drive

Programmable Logic Control (PLC)

SCADA

Whats VFD.. an Overview !!

A

system for controlling the speed an Alternating Current (AC) electric motor.
By

controlling the frequency of the electric power supplied to the electric motor.
It

provides the starting torque control, gradually ramps the motor up to the operating speed to lessen mechanical and electrical stresses, thereby reducing maintenance and repair costs resulting in the increase of instrument life.

Rectifier Soft Charge Circuit Intermediate Circuit (DC link) Brake Circuit Inverter Pulse Width Modulator Control And Regulation Section

Rectifier Section

This section is used to change the incoming power from AC to DC.

Soft Charge Circuit

A Part of Rectifier Section. Used to power up the Variable Frequency Drive.

Intermediate Circuit

Acts as a power storage facility for the next section, the INVERTER section.

Inverter Section

Takes the voltage from the DC bus and using PWM sends a signal which appears to motor as AC.

Brake Circuit

Used as Dynamic Braking with devices that need to stop or change direction quickly.

Pulse Width Modulator

The waveform that goes to the motor shows the switching frequency of IGBTs. This switching pattern is known as Pulse Width Modulation.

Control & Regulation

Coordinates and regulates signals inside the drive. Monitors AC motor Current.

PLC controlled VFD

A device invented to replace the necessary sequential relay circuits for the machine control.

The user enters the program, usually via a software, that gives the desired results. Saves money and time, so almost any application that needs some type of electrical control has a need of PLC.

SCADA overview
Enables user to collect data and send control information to the central server. Employs telemetry. both data acquisition and

consists of collecting Information, transferring it to the central site, carrying out necessary control & analysis, and then displaying the data on a number of operator screens.
