CELL MEMBRANE

Function of Organelle:

Analogy:

Control what substances go in and out of a cell

CELL WALL

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Give rigidity, strength, and protection against mechanical stress

Maintain a plant cells shape, protect the cell plant, keep plant upright against forces of gravity

CENTRIOLE

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Help assemble microtubules during cell division

CHLOROPLAST

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Make up green pigment called chlorophyll that helps plants make their own food

Photosynthesis is the result of energy

CILIA

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Move the cell from one place to another using small hairs that go in a rowing motion

CYTOPLASM

Function of organelle:

Contains a cells cytosol and all the cellular components of it except the nucleus

Analogy:

CYTOSKELETON

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Gives mechanical support to the cell and helps to maintain the cellular shape and allows cell to move itself

Cytoskeleton fibers

MICROTUBULES

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Makes up cytoskeleton that gives the cell its shape, cell motility, organelle movement, and chromosome movement during cell division

MICROFILAMENTS

Function of organelle: Maintain cell shape, contract muscles, cell division, cell motility, cleavage information, cytoplasmic streaming, and changes in cell shape

Analogy:

INTERMEDIATE FILAMETNS

Function of organelle:

Maintain the cells shape, an anchorage of nucleus and other organelles and forms the nuclear lamina

EXTRACELLULAR MATRIX (E.C.M.)

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Support, adhesion, movement, and regulation of a cell

FLAGELLA

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Move a cell from one place to another using a tail going at a snakelike motion

GOLGI APPARATUS

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Sorts the proteins into packages to be sent to the appropriate destination

LYSOSOME

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Digest old organelles that are no longer useful to the cell

MITOCHONDRIA

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Produce large amounts of energy for a cell from sugars

NUCLEAR MEMBRANE

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Facilitate and regulate the exchange of materials between the nucleus and the cytoplasm

NUCLEOLUS

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Location for gathering of ribosomes

Get rid of bacteria/toxic wastes

NUCLEUS

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Control center of a cell; contains the genetic material of a cell

Nucleu s

PEROXISOMES

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Break down fatty acids into smaller molecules to the mitochondria, (detoxify alcohol and poisons to water)

RIBOSOMES

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Make proteins form amino acids

Ribosomes

ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Making proteins for exports like hormones or structural proteins

SMOOTH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

Function of organelle:

Analogy:

Makes lipids, processes carbohydrates, and modifies chemicals that are toxic to the cell

VACUOLE

Function of organelle:

maintains fluids, removes wastes, stores ingested food, and provides and maintains cellular structure

VESICLE

Function of organelle:

Take modified materials from Golgi apparatus or Rough ER to other parts of the cell and take secretory materials from the Golgi apparatus to the cell wall
