I wanted my opening sequence to have a long lasting affect on the audience which will make my opening sequence more

memorable. I wanted my opening sequence to be like Four Lions but without the humorous side. I wanted to use current affairs that are known and recognised by everyone as Film 4 films use current affairs that appear on the news which the target audience will be able to recognise such as the exploration of underage drinking in Fish Tank. I accomplished these targets through planning and research as it allowed me to see how film 4 represented its characters in the film 4 films. I adopted their representations of film4 as they are my production company and therefore my representations in my BSR film had to have similar representation of film4. In the next slides I will be discussing what I used and how film4 impacted it.

Analysed the opening credits: As I will be producing a two minute opening sequence I decided to carry out some analysis to get an idea of what it should look like. I watch a number of BSR ( british Social Realism) films, the majority of these films contained opening credits which lasted around two minutes, one of such films was happy go lucky which lasted for 2 minutes and 49 seconds. This allowed me to analyse the film4 conventions and gave me a guideline of what should be within the first two minutes. Analysing opening sequence of BSR film: As I am producing a BSR opening sequence, it will need to contain the conventions of a BSR film. Therefore I analysed a Film 4 film and noted down the way the mise-en scene, editing, sound and camera work was used and what it represented. For example in fish tank they used realist locations which contains conventions that gives a clear idea of what the film will be about and ideas that it will be addressing, for example in fish tank they used the location of a council flat this represented poverty and people who may lack education Analysing opening sequence of a Hollywood film: After I analysed a BSR film, I wanted to create a boundary of what conventions I needed to put in and what I shouldnt put in. Therefore I analysed a Hollywood movie Captain America . This helped me to see that I shouldnt use a lot of special effects. I also recognised the huge contrast between the two types of films as Hollywood movies contained a lot of special effects and film 4 films didnt. Therefore this is a convention that I shouldnt use.

Research on my Storyline: The current affairs which are used by Fim4 such as the underage drinking in Fish tank and the gang crime in Kidulthood are all relevant news which affect everyone is this country. This is why I wanted to use a storyline from current news which everyone is aware of. Through a lot of research from reading newspaers and watching the news, the same headlines always came up, The oppression in Syria. I found the news about Syria eye opening, interesting and horrifying. The Syrian government are oppressing the civilians and how jounalists are banned from entering the country. Therefore I wanted to base my storyline around that which is where I came up with the storyline of an ex-syrian soilder exposing the truth about Syria. Recci Video: Film4 uses realistic locations to allow their target audience to relate to the location. Through the use of realistic locations the audience will be able to get an idea of what the storyline will be about. For example Kidulthood is filmed in school, the audience will be able to realise the theme of the story will be able school kids. To use this convention of Film4 I used realistic locations which my target audience will be able to relate to. This is why we used a bedroom as one of the locations. The room had no curtains, had a broken wardrobes. The audience will be able to see that, this person doesnt have enough money for necessities. Analysing sound of BSR films: Sound is able to set a particular atmosphere and it helps anchor down a particular emotion. Such as East is East; happy British music is used when there are Asian characters are the scene, this signifys the are characters shaped through the environment they are in. I want to be able to use the same form of anchorage because I want my audience to feel the emotions which I want. That way the audience will get the message straight away. This is why I used the Arabic musc which has a sad mellow tempo. The audience will be able to find out that the man is muslim and has gone through a lot of pain and misery making the audience feel sorry for him. Using this information I was able to proceed to my next stage of creating my opening sequence, the production stage, I will talking about how the location and equipment that I used and how film 4 affected my opening sequence.

Equipment: Film4s equipment used in their films always have a reason for being there such as, East is East where constume which is wore in the 90s signifing the film being based in the past. I took this into consideration and I used equipment that is relevant in my opening such as: Syrian flag, this is because my character is Syrian and the main issue in the film is about Syria and the flag plays as an icon which my character rejects. I used a pen and paper which plays a very big part in my film as it relates to communicating the horrors occurring in Syria. Location: film4 useds realistic locations in their BSR (British Social Realism) films such as fish tank, council flats are used as it connotes uneducated young poeple and working class people which the film is about. I used this convention of film 4 and I used a realistic location in my opening sequence such as a small 8x8 room which contains broken wardrobes and no curtains which connotes that the character hasn't got enough money to buy mecessities. Using realistic location will allow my audience to get a clear idea straightaway how my character is represented. Cast: Film 4 uses actors which are unknown but are new talent. This is due to the budget which is given to film 4. Due to their low budget, not much money can be spent to hiring known actors. To follow this Film4 convention I will need to hire a unknown actor. So I used my friend, Rafi Qureshi to play the interrogator in the first couple of scenes. In the next slide I will be discussing about the distribution for my BSR film and what marketing strategies I will use and so on.

Distribution is the stage at the end of post-production where the film finds its way to the target audience by making them aware of the film through the use of various ways of advertising. Film 4 films are mainly shown in independent cinemas, this is due to their target audience and as I have the same target audience I will need to follow the same conventions of their distribution. As my film is targeting a niche market, my BSR film should be filmed in an independent cinema because my film isnt generic to be film in mainstream cinemas. As my theme of my BSR film is a current news which is recognised by everyone I will use viral marketing. This is because it is the cheapest option and also very efficient as everyone has internet and it will reach out to many people, this can be done by making websites, advertising on the social networking sites (gorilla marketing). This has been done by film 4 and has been successful such as Four Lions. They had created its own website and advertised Four Lions on Facebook which made the audience aware of the film.
