How Does a Fire Work?

Fire is a chemical reaction involving rapid oxidation or burning of a fuel. (A visible effect of the process of combustion)

Fuel = any combustible material-solid, liquid or gas. Oxygen = the air we breathe. Heat = the energy necessary to increase the temperature of the fuel.
2/21/2012 Security department-The Torch

Fire can be stopped by removing one of these elements

Take any one of the three factors away The fire cannot occur or will be extinguished if it was already burning.

1. Remove oxygen supply by smothering or suffocation. 2. Remove source of fuel by isolation or starving. 3. Reduce heat temperature by cooling.

What to do in case of a FIRE?

DO NOT PANICSTAY CALM! Remember the word FIRE for an effective response F Find (Should you discover a fire) I Inform (Raise the alarm); Pull manual station nearest to you or call emergency number 7777; Give your name, department and location of fire or use the fire phone which is next to service elevator. RRescue (If it is safe to do so) EExtinguish (If it is safe to do so), Evacuate (If the fire is out of control) Evacuate to the nearest assembly point (DO NOT USE LIFTS) If you encounter smoke, find another exit through the smoke, stay low to the Ground and crawl on your hands and knees; try and grab a wet towel if possible

Fire Alarms & Detection

Smoke Detectors:
This is a device that senses the presence of smoke in a building and warns the occupants, enabling them to escape a fire before succumbing to smoke inhalation or burns. Modern Alarm Systems have voice notification features that allow hotel employees to alert only those guests who are in immediate danger, e.g. if a smoke detector on the 15th floor operates, the employee might be instructed to notify the guests on the 14th, 15th, 16th & 17th floors to evacuate. Alert guests on higher floors to prepare for an order to evacuate. The specific evacuation message will vary by the type, size and layout of the 2/21/2012 Security department-The Torch 10 building.

Fire Alarms & Detection

Heat Detectors:

This is a device designed to initiate a desired action in response to a change in surroundings caused by an unwanted fire. It responds when the surrounding temperature exceeds a specific minimum .

Fire Alarms & Detection

Optical Beam Smoke Detectors:

These are used to provide wide area smoke detection. These are usually used in situations where it is impractical & inappropriate, enabling coverage of a large area at minimal cost. Optical Beam Smoke Detectors are also ideally suited for areas that might include high ceilings, dusty & dirty environments or environments that experience temperature extremes.

12

Fire Alarms & Detection

Gas Detectors:
A device which detects the presence of various gases within an area, usually as part of a safety system. This type of equipment is used to detect a gas leak and interface with a control system so the process can be automatically shut down. A gas detector can also sound an alarm to operators in the area where the leak is occurring, giving them the opportunity to leave the area. This type of device is important because there are many gases that can be harmful to organic life, such as humans or animals.

13

Fire Alarms & Detection devices

Pull Station (MANUAL CALL POINT): for alert
Is an active fire protection device, usually wallmounted, that, when activated, initiates an alarm on a fire alarm system. In its simplest form, the user activates the alarm by pulling the handle down, sending an alarm to the fire alarm control panel. 14

Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are divided into four categories, based on different types of fires. Each fire extinguisher also has a numerical rating that serves as a guide for the amount of fire the extinguisher can handle. The higher the number, the more firefighting power.

Using a Fire Extinguisher

2/21/2012

Security department-The Torch

16

P.A.S.S. Method
Pull the Pin at the top of the extinguisher. The pin releases a locking mechanism and will allow you to discharge the extinguisher.

Aim at the base of the fire, not the flames. This is important - in order to put out the fire, you must extinguish the fuel.

Squeeze the lever slowly. This will release the extinguishing agent in the extinguisher. If the handle is released, the discharge will stop.

Sweep from side to side. Using a sweeping motion, move the fire extinguisher back and forth until the fire is completely out. Operate the extinguisher from a safe distance, several feet away, and then move towards the fire once it starts to diminish. Be sure to read the instructions on your fire extinguisher - different fire extinguishers recommend operating them from different distances. Remember: Aim at the base of the fire, not at the flames!!!!

2/21/2012

NOTE: When combating a fire, your back must always be towards the fire exit.

17

Fire Hose Reel

Fire Hose Reels provide a reasonably accessible and controlled supply of water to combat a potential Class A fire risk
Do NOT use on electrical fires. Remember water conducts electricity, so using a fire hose reel on it could lead to electrocution!
2/21/2012 Security department-The Torch

18

Fire Sprinkler System

Is an active fire protection measure, consisting of a water supply system, providing adequate pressure and flow rate to a water distribution piping system, onto which fire sprinklers are connected. Although historically only used in factories and large commercial buildings.

19

Fire Blanket
Is a safety device designed to extinguish small incipient (starting) fires. It consists of a sheet of fire retardant material which is placed over a fire in order to smother it.

Fire blankets are used to extinguish hot oil or deep pan fire in the kitchen. It can also be used to roll and lay down a person whose clothing has caught fire. When using, Security department-The Torch hold2/21/2012 the blanket to protect your face and body from heat. 20

Ansul Restaurant Fire Suppression System

Ansul is a brand name for wet chemical fire suppression equipment found in kitchens of restaurants and hotels. The systems usually contain an automated activation system (via heat rated fusible link) and a manual release mechanism. The name Ansul comes from ANhydrous SULphur dioxide (SO2).

21

FM 200
FM-200, chemically known as heptafluoropropane, FM-200 systems reach extinguishing levels in 10 seconds or less, stopping ordinary combustible, electrical, and flammable liquid fires before they cause significant damage. That's the fastest fire protection available, period. When fire is extinguished this quickly, it means less damage, lower repair costs, and an extra margin of safety for people. It also means less downtime and disruption of business.
