A question may be either a linguistic

expression used to make a request for information , or else the request itself made by such an expression. This information may be provided with an answer.

May you pay attention ? Do you want money? what is it for? What makes the presentation different?

You like ice-cream ?

[positive sentence intonated as a question]

A speaker who ask a yes/no question expect

a response or at least a yes or not. The speaker may use the syntactic structure of a declarative sentence with intonation and facial expression, thus creating a interrogative yes-no utterance. The girls are arriving today? Mary is sick?

In questions, the word order subject-verbs-object is the

same as in affirmative sentences. The only thing thats different is that you usually have to put the auxiliary verb (or the main verb be) before the subject. Interrogatives are put at the beginning of the sentences:

WH question also called constituted question, are

used typically when the speaker assumes that they and the hearer share the knowledge of a proposition concerning an even/state. That proposition is thus part of the presupposed background the pragmatic context within which the WH- question is translated.

The Subject Wh Question Rule: To form a subject

Wh-question in English, replace the subject with a question word, using who (for people) or what (for non-people) ? The word order is that of a positive sentence.
Watch out: There is no auxiliary verb in Wh Subject questions in the Present Simple and Past Simple tenses. The question word simply replaces the subject.

How much it cost?

How much will it cost?/ How much does it cost?

'LIKE' can be used as a VERB for preference and as a

PREPOSITION for description.


What does she like doing at the weekend? (VERB) =

What does she enjoy doing?


What is she like? (PREPOSITION) = Describe her

character (and maybe her appearance).

NOTE! 'How is she?' REFERS ONLY TO HEALTH &

WELL-BEING.

Eg. How is your mother? = Is your mother in good

health.

Statement questions can be used to express

surprise or disbelief.
You're not married? They won the game? He does?

For added effect, you can add a wh- word.

You did what? She went where?

Aren't you going to the dance?

Haven't you been there before?


Isn't that Doctor Zimbango?

Is it the blue one, or the red one? Would you like some tea or coffee?

Question tags have the same form as reply questions

but are used either to ask for confirmation or a response.

Eg. You're Brazilian, aren't you?

Eg. You haven't finished yet, have you?

NOTE!

After 'Let's....' the question tag is 'Shall we?'


Eg. Let's go out for a meal, shall we? After the imperative the question tag is 'Will you?'
