The Problem Today

Accident scenario in the world
Every day 3000 people die in road accidents, 1.3 million road accident deaths every year. Road accident is the third largest cause of accidental deaths & will become 1st largest by 2020 Accident death toll to touch 1.9 million by 2020.

Accident Scenario in Developing Countries

90% road accident deaths in the developing countries.

Accidental costs estimated as Rs. 4,50,000 crores.

This is almost twice as much as the total development assistance received worldwide by the developing countries.

Accident Scenario in India

342 deaths per day, equivalent to a jumbo crash no survivors

14 deaths per hour 1.27 lacs deaths and 5.5 lacs injuries per year India with 1% of worlds vehicles accounts for 10% of world road accidents. 14 Accident deaths/10,000 vehicles in India (1.6 in US) Estimated cost 3% of GDP (worth Rs. 75,000.00 crores). Roads accident toll rising at an alarming rate of 8% as compared to 4% in the previous decade.

Accident Scenario in Haryana

More than 1700 deaths every year 140 Accident deaths per million population in Haryana (double of Indian average) Accident deaths per 10,000 vehicles in Haryana is 5 per cent higher than all-India average. The above is an eye opener

Complexity of Indian Scenario

In last 50 years, automobile population has grown 170 times while the road infrastructure has expanded only nine times. Heterogeneity of traffic: 17 categories of road users and 43 types of vehicles Gross underreporting: Road accidents Violations Ribbon development 10 million violations per day in the capital; only 10-15,000 be challaned. Source: Joint Commissioner, Delhi Traffic Police Poor road conditions and unsafe structures lack overpasses & underpasses Lack of adequate traffic and road safety aids Encroachments - Temporary Shops Used for sleeping and walking - restricting traffic.

The Problem Tomorrow

Of every 90 children born this year

One will die violently in a highway crash during his/her lifetime.

70 of every 100 will be injured in a crash during their lifetimessome more than once.

UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
MURTHAL ( Haryana) INDIA-131039

Role of Driver Training Institutes

Require all learner vehicles to display signs. Equip learner and novice drivers with the necessary skills, attitudes and behavior needed to drive safely on our roads. Maintain and foster a high standard of driver training, instruction and professionalism. Promote and foster the upgrading of driving skills amongst drivers, particularly drivers of heavy and public service vehicles. Establish an Association and enhance industry professionalism by developing a Code of Providers teaching materials, Driving Instructors training programmes, etc., for their members.

Role of Universities
Ensure the development of high quality databases. Establishment of centre of excellence in highway safety Provide reliable India specific research results and knowledge against which policy decisions can be made. Ensure the supply of safety professionals, auditors and planning experts to the field and help in up gradation of various skills of working Engineers. Design short term courses to educate general road users, road side venders, eatery workers and other social groups to educate them regarding road safety signs, traffic rules and First aid as they are the first to reach the accident site. Ensure that there is a balance between research on basic and applied topics. Ensure that road safety research is of high quality, timely and that its implications are identified and promoted.
