Building Headquarters in California : 6CN012

Introduction
The Environmental Protection Agency Headquarters in located at

California. (CAL/EPA Headquarters) It has 25 Stories, 950,000.00 sq.foot office building. It has won two additional major green building awards; 1. The first high rise platinum certification from the U.S. 2. The prestigious California Governmental and Economic Leadership Award. It has Day care center, Central cafeteria, and public auditorium and Car Park. Green features include solar panels and energy efficient performance. One of the most energy efficient high-rice in nation.

This Building Structure is build on;

Piles with poured-in-place concrete piles caps and grade beams.

Combinations of structure steel-moment resistant frame/braced

frame, metal floor decking, poured-in-place concrete slabs and spray applied fireproofing.
The exterior cladding consists of precast panels with a granite

facade.

The building was based on leading edge green design and

engineering principles that save energy and natural resources.

Sustainability building
Energy efficient, less water usage, non toxic, renewable energy

source and longer life time.

Not harmful from the environment.

Construction materials are natural.

After demolition of building; building material can be reusable,

recyclable.

Innovative and Technological features

Maximizes Daylight.

Energy conservation.
Super high efficiency / low mercury tubes, and perimeter light sensors

that automatically dim the lights when the sun shines in brightly.
Solar energy generation; Photovoltaic panels mounted on the low rise

roof.
Water Conservation. Use of Native Grasses in Landscape. Use of environmentally sensitive and resource efficient materials

Sustainable benefit
The sustainability is the extent to which current needs can be fulfilled without compromising the needs of future generations. The sustainability issues are concerned based on Economic, Environmental and Social value.

Social benefit
Child developments centre; can accommodate 60 new - born, kids and provides priority enrolment and reduced additional costs for building employees.

Economical Benefit
The building HVAC system allows for on-demand fresh air,

flushing internal air and cooling with outside air. This system is an energy efficiency measures save electricity.
Solar panels located on the mid-level rooftop; generate

electricity.
Day lighting; Applies in all climates, healthier, more pleasant,

and free. Artificial lighting contributes to heat loads, and it can be affect buildings electrical load.

Environmental Benefits
Wood Cladding in the lobby and other public areas is made

from sustainable Eucalyptus which is plentiful , fast- growing and its harvest does not damage the environment.

Spackle and Paints used in the building eliminated volatile

organic compounds reducing Air pollution.

Barriers.
Most of the Building Materials are new from the Building

Industry specially some are newly from this building. Therefore the Durability of the Materials are Lower, Insecurity , no Warranty and most are untested Materials.

So It may be harmful for the building life time.

Discussions
CAL/EPA Building design is an environmentally sensitive.

The Rewards of green building are reflected in both ecological

and economical returns. Cal/EPA mission was to reduce the environmental footprint of the building.
Protecting the environment, using less energy through natural

ventilation provisions and daylight utilization, cost saving

developing better waste management and taking water

conservation are specially consider in the Cal/EPA Building Project.

11

Conclusion
Building sector is the largest source of Greenhouse gas

emissions around the globe. Being green, or sustainable, is one

pressing issue coming from both internal and external drivers for construction and engineering companies.
Hence; Constructing a sustainable friendly building is common

in present day Construction Industry.
