What is Batch Production ?

Batch production is defined by American

Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) manufacture ofa limited number ofproduct (but many such, quantities of differentproducts) produced at regularintervals and stocked in warehouses as finished goods (or finished parts,)awaiting sales (or withdrawal for assembly).

Batch production is characterized by the

Typical examples of Batchproduction

Process industries -

pharmaceuticals, paints,chemicals; medium

Heavy engineering industry -

electric motors, switch gears, heavy motor vehicles, internal combustion engines

manufacturers of ready-made

garments; manufacturing and 5/22/12 assembly shops such asmachine

Advantages of Batch Production

Better utilization of plant and

machinery.
Promotes functional

specialization.
Cost per unit is lower as

compared to job order production.

Lower investment in plant and

machinery.
5/22/12 Flexibility to accommodate and

Limitations of Batch Production

Material handling is complex

because of irregular and longer flows.

Production planning and control is

complex.
Work in process inventory is higher

compared to continuous production.

Higher set up costs due to 5/22/12

4. Providing actual output data for capacity control purposes 5. Providing quantity by location by shop order for WIP inventory and accounting purposes 6. Providing measurement of efficiency, utilization, and productivity of manpower and machines 5/22/12

What is Scheduling & Sequencing ?

Scheduling -

is the allocation of resources and the sequencing of tasks to produce goods and services. Production scheduling specifies the time each job starts and completes on each machine, as well as any additional resources needed.

The goal is to answer the following example

questions: Which machine should be used to run the production batch? What job should be run next? Which order will be delivered late? 5/22/12

Based on Established Job Priorities and the way arrivals

are treated:

Static Arrival means we only enter jobs into consideration at fixed points in time uses job accumulation Scheduling means that jobs are dispatched as they arrive with continuously revised job priorities scheduling algorithms are machine-limited (assumes labor is always available but machine time is the problem) algorithms are studying Labor-limited systems (due to cells and multi-tasking workers)
