The term broadband commonly refers to high-speed Internet access.

The FCC(The Federal Communications Commission) defines broadband service as data transmission speeds exceeding 200 kilobits per second (Kbps), or 200,000 bits per second, in at least one direction: downstream (from the Internet to the users computer) or upstream (from the users computer to the Internet). Is a high-speed network connection that makes video delivery possible. Broadband can carry data, voice, TV and video all together over long distances at much higher speeds and in greater quantities than a usual telephone line.

To set realistic strategic objectives, e-commerce managers need to understand the level of customer access and activity in each marketplace.

What is the key customer profile information that managers must collect using market research?
Customers who have access to the channel. Customers who are influenced by using the channel. Customers who purchase using the channel. The information can be gathered as secondary research by accessing many online data sources. E-commerce provides a global marketplace. On a worldwide basis, a small portion of the population has access to the internet. In individual countries, the proportion of consumers and businesses accessing the internet is surprising. In each country, adoption of the internet will vary according to demographic characteristics ( sex, age, social class and income). Regional differences, as access is usually much higher in capital cities.

Competition in the marketplace amongst broadband providers has caused a great increase in the internet access options available for consumers and small businesses. The increased speed and the always on broadband connection have helped increase internet usage.

Broadband service provides higher speed of data transmission Allows more content to be carried through the transmission pipeline. Broadband provides access to the highest quality Internet services streaming media, VoIP (Internet phone), gaming, and interactive services. Broadband is always onDoes not block phone lines and no need to reconnect to network after logging off. Less delay in transmission of content when using broadband

Previously access to the internet from the consumers home was through the telephone line, which is outdated. It provided consumers with limited bandwidth, as the line was never designed to carry anything other than voice communications. Wireless and wired alternatives are available. The wired alternatives make use of two wires that are already connected to the users home- the phone line and the cable TV line. These wires can do double duty to carry internet content on one channel while they perform their normal functions on the other channels.

Wired broadband options:Digital Subscriber Line (DSL): Transmits speed up to 8 million bits per second (8mbps) over a standard phone line. Dsl uses the phone line already installed in the consumers home, allowing to make phone calls and surf the web. Users must install a Dsl modem ; provided by some computer manufacturers as a preinstalled item or by phone companies. Cable Modems: Speed of transmission over a cable modem ranges between 500Kbps and 2.5 Mbps. Cable modem allows transmission of internet traffic over the cable TV wire connected to the home. Major problem cable companies face is having too many subscribers. This problem occurs due to subscribers in a cable neighborhood share bandwidth. The more subscribers who share, the less bandwidth is available. Therefore if the neighborhood becomes saturated with subscribers, each subscriber will experience delays.

The big advantage that the cable companies have is early market penetration. The early adopters chose cable modems because they were the first technology available. Diffusion occurs via word of mouth. Another advantage is that the cable companies solved their infrastructure issues early and can now focus on establishing value added services such as the following: video on demand CD quality audio Online games available for download and purchase. Each value- added service provides a barrier to entry for the phone companies. Why purchase a service with fewer features? Phone companies will have a difficulty catching up. One way phone companies can compete is through price.

Wireless broadband options:

Two smaller competitors in broadband are satellite and other wireless. Using satellite the major limitation is limited bandwidth that doesn't work well when subscriber increases. Wireless technology seems to have a bright future. Wireless relies on towers to relay signals in a mode similar to that of cell phones. PDAs, notebook computers, and other wireless devices are served with wireless communication. The devices are becoming popular as users want access from anywhere. Wireless access is best categorized by distance and bandwidth. The cell phone network was designed to handle low-bandwidth voice communications. Data communication over the network is slow. Third-generation (3G) cell phone networks should help solve the bandwidth problem because they will transfer data up to 10 times faster than traditional cell phone networks.

South Korea have the highest broad band penetration and highest speed service Most wire ADSL(asymmetric digital subscriber line) connections in Europe operate at a speed of less than 1 megabit(million bits) per second In south Korea ,the two biggest service providers offer a standard ADSL at up to 8 Mbps( mega bits per second),also offer high speed or VDSL( very-high-bitrate digital subscriber line), Services that can reach 20 Mbps and will eventually hit 50 Mbps. Broad band transformed politics in south Korea Online services are fast becoming mainstream
