Diction

Is at the heart of any discussion about style, word choice, figurative language, sound of sentences Above and beyond grammar, creates the tone of a text Choice of words especially with regard to correctness, clearness, or effectiveness Choice and use of words in speech or writing.
A way of speaking, usually judged in terms of prevailing standards of pronunciation and elocution

Examples of DICTION

The actor's diction was so poor I could hardly understand what he was saying. The student's essay was full of careless diction.

A sentence is a group of words , which when they are written down, begin with a capital letter and end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Most sentences contain a subject and a verb. Its divide in three Part Simple Sentences Compound Sentences Complex Sentences

SIMPLE SENTENCES
A simple sentence, also called an independent clause, 2. contains a subject and a verb, and it expresses a complete thought. 3. A simple sentence is a sentence containing one main clause and no subordinate clauses. 4. subjects are in yellow, and verbs are in green. EXAMPLE A. Some students like to study in the mornings. B . Juan and Rahul play football every afternoon.

COMPOUND SENTENCE

A compound sentence contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator. The coordinators are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. Except for very short sentences, coordinators are always preceded by a comma.

. In the following compound sentences, subjects are in yellow, verbs are in green, and the subordinators and their commas are in red. A. When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give the teacher the last page. B. The teacher returned the homework after she noticed the error.

COMPLEX SENTENCES

A complex sentence has an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses. complex sentence always has a subordinator such as because, since, after, although, or when or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which.

complex sentences, subjects are in yellow, verbs are in green, and the subordinators and their commas (when required) are in red. Example A. I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to speak English. B. Devid played football, so Maria went shopping.

The paragraph is a series of sentences

PARAGRAPH

a paragraph is a group of at least five sentences, a paragraph is half a page long, etc. A paragraph is defined as "a group of sentences or a single sentence that forms a unit" a paragraph is a sentence or group of sentences that support one main idea.

5-step process to paragraph development


Step 1.- Decide on a controlling idea and create a topic sentence. Step 2.- Explain the controlling idea . Step 3. Give an example (or multiple examples). Step 4. Explain the example(s). Step 5. Complete the paragraph's idea or transition into the next paragraph.
