Earliest History
30 000 years ago-the first settlers -Asian hunters and nomads

Native Americans
there were about 10 million people, in before colonization, 200 tribes

by 1865- only 300 000 remained forced off their land many died from diseases brought by the colonists

Colonization
about 1000 AD- the first European to reach the North America 1492- Christopher Columbus

the early 1600s - beginning of a great tide of emigration from Europe to North America
the first British settlement in North AmericaRoanoke Island The Lost Colony

Following settlements
Jamestown- Virginia, started by the Virginia company in 1607 1620- Mayflower, the Pilgrims set sail for Virginia, but a storm blew them instead to Massachusetts half of the settlers dia during the first winter

native Americans teach them how to farm and trap animals= first Thanksgiving

The French and Indian War


1754 to 1763 - over the land in America between the English and French Called the French and Indian War because the Indians helped the French in the war against the British The British won, but at a cost a lot of money= it led to the War of Independence

The War of Independence (1775-1783)


French and Indian War cost a lot of money

Parliament (the British government) decided to tax to colonies to help pay for it
The Sugar Act of 1764- tax on molasses and sugar Stamp Act of 1765 - tax on all printed material

A Tax on Tea
Parliament began taxing tea- the most important beverage in the colonies the colonists decided to boycott all British tea

The Boston Tea Party


the colonists dressed up like Mohawk Indians, boarded three British ships full of tea and dumped all the tea into the harbor

The Declaration of Independence


The United States first needed to declare independence from Great Britain Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4, 1776


that is why Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 4th

Emancipation Proclamation (1863)


it freed the slaves only in states that have seceded from the Union it did not free slaves in border states Emancipation = freedom

Important battles
the war begins in Fort Sumter Gettysburg- the turning point; the largest battle in the history of the Western hemisphere Over 100, 000 people died in 3 days It was the last time the South invaded the North

Results of the Civil War?


13th Amendment it freed slaves 14th Amendment everyone born in the US is a citizen, due process of law for all citizens 15th Amendment- Black male suffrage
