Housekeeping???
Housekeeping is the act of cleaning and furnishings of place

Why Housekeeping ?
Effective housekeeping can eliminate some workplace hazards and help get a job done safely and properly. Poor housekeeping can frequently contribute to accidents by hiding hazards that cause injuries. Housekeeping is not just cleanliness. It includes keeping work areas neat and orderly; maintaining halls and floors free of slip and trip hazards; and removing of waste materials (e.g., paper, cardboard) and other fire hazards from work areas. It also requires paying attention to important details such as the layout of the whole workplace, aisle marking, the adequacy of storage facilities, and maintenance. Good housekeeping is also a basic part of accident and fire prevention.

Good housekeeping
Good industrial housekeeping is the foundation of safety, quality, employee satisfaction and high productivity in manufacturing. A workplace that is cluttered, disorganized, or dirty leads to poor quality of work, accidents and waste of time and resources. Tools must be easy to find, machines well maintained and ready to use, equipment packed away safely. If these safe and efficient working methods become a routine habit, then the workplace will run smoothly.

5S System
Remove materials and equipment that do not belong in the work area. One method is to place a label on those items not required and place them in a holding area. If they are not used in a few months, work out why they were there, and how to avoid build up of unnecessary items in the future. Sorting increases floor space and removes broken tools, scrap, and excess raw material. Eliminate time wasted looking for things by creating logical storage. A place for everything and everything in its place. Create tool boards, modular shelving and cabinets for trashcans, brooms, mop and buckets. Paint the floor to demarcate specific work areas and storage locations.

Sweeping and scrubbing schedule. Clean everything including the cobwebs from the ceiling. Paint the workplace and keep it looking bright. Work out a daily schedule to make sure that employees each take a turn at cleaning the work area thoroughly. People feel more respected if the work environment is pleasant and free of dust, dirt and grime. This step will help to create employee ownership in the equipment and facility.

Sort, set in order and shine regularly. Work teams should create schedules, inventories and standards to assist in the regular performance of the first three steps. Responsibilities should be assigned and regular updates on 5S activities should be included in team briefings and meetings.

Integrate 5S into workplace culture. Good housekeeping is a daily activity and happens week in week out, it never stops. Time must be allocated for all housekeeping tasks and checks on housekeeping standards should be scheduled on a weekly or monthly basis.
