Green Building

Sumit Mishra

Concept Origin
Green Building , also termed as sustainable building , refers to a building created by using process that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient throughout its life cycle. In India , there are mainly two rating systems for Green Buildings, namely GRIHA Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment and LEED Leadership in energy and Environmental Design MNRE has adopted the GRIHA Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment as a national rating system of India. LEED India is the indigenized version of the LEED rating system and is administered by the IGBC under a license agreement with the US Green Building Council (USGBC).

Benefits of Green Building

The benefits we can get from green building:
A. Environmental Benefits 1. Reduce waste 2. Conservation of natural resources 3. Improve and protect the diversity of ecosystems 4. Improving air quality 5. Improve water quality B. Economic Benefits Improve the productivity of occupants Optimize life-cycle economic performance Reduce operating costs Creating and expanding markets for green products and services C. Social benefits Improve the aesthetic quality The reduction of problems with local infrastructure Improve the health and comfort of occupants Improve the overall quality of life

Land Mark Green Building in India

The Center for Environmental Science and Engineering (CESE) building at the IIT Kanpur, became the first building in India to be awarded five-star GRIHA Rating in the year 2009. Suzlons office in Pune Police training school , Turuchi , Tasgaon in Maharashtra. Apart from these , a number of buildings in corporate and public sector have been awarded ratings on the basis of their performance.

Indira Paryavaran Bhawan will be the first ever building in the government sector to be awarded five star rating once gets completed .
