Distributed multimedia system

Distributed Multimedia System

A DMS is an integrated communication ,

computing and information system that enables the processing, management, delivery and presentation of synchronized multimedia information that guarantees QOS Enhances the human communication by exploiting both visual and aural senses

An example of DMS

Main features of DMS

Technology Integration Integrates information, communication and computing system to form a unified digital processing environment. Multimedia Integration Accommodates discrete data as well as continuous data in an integrated environment. Real Time Performance Requires the dtorage system, processing systems and transmission systems to have real time performance

System wide QOS support Supports diverse QOS requirements on an end-to-end basis along the data path from the sender, through the transport network and to the receiver. Interactivity Requies duplex communication between the user and the system and allows each other to control the information. Multimedia stream,SynchronizationPresents the playback continuity of media frame within a single continuous media stream, and temporal relationship among multiple related data objects.

Standardization support Allows interoperability

despite heterogeneity in the information content, presentation format, user interfaces, network protocols and consumers electronic

Resource Management of DMS

DMS integrates and manages the information,

communication and computing subsystem End to end QOS guarantees

Characteristics of Resource Management

System wide resource management and

admission control to ensure desired QOS level Quantative specification and qualitative specification as in internet Dynamic model

Distributed Multimedia Server

Typically, a multimedia server is connected

through an interconnection to clients who request information on demand The servers store and provide information along with other facilities like billing, encryption, etc. Example: Video server

Video Server
Video stream can be taken as an example of the

DMS Requires high I/O bandwidth Requires high storage Simultaneous access of information is possible

10

Important parameters of Multimedia Server

I/O Bandwidth:

Designates how many clients to be served simultaneously

Storage Requirement:

Determines the no. of that can be stored in the server

11

Categories of server
i.

ii.

Centralized system Distributed system

12

Centralized system
High end system

Manages video stream centrally

No client request for video stream can be blocked

as long I/O bandwidth is available

13

Distributed system
Collection of workstations or PCs

Communication between client and server

High blocking probabilities Activities between client and server can be

divided into:
Session Transaction Services

14

Distributed system
Session:-connection

between client and server

Transaction:-

Query:- asks for metadata of video server - not time critical

Video:- sequence of video related activities

- encapsulated by open & close of video file - time critical
Services:-

initiate, terminate or switch videos - playback, fast forward & slow forward
services possible

15

Multimedia Packing

i.

Method that achieves load and storage balancing in distributed multimedia server Basic Operations:
Placement of video stream in server and replication of small subset of video stream Weighted scheduling of client request for the replicated video stream

High QOS High bandwidth Asymmetric bandwidth

19

Components of ITV
Set top box (consumer premises equipment)

Access network broadband network

Network based server User friendly interface

20

VOD
ITV service that supports full duplex

Service as per request

Video rental service using broadband network Uses split and merge protocol Near video on demand True video on demand not possible in reality

Telecooperation
Provides electronic shared workplace

Information sharing purpose

Also known as Computer Supported Cooperative

Work (CSCW)

24

Classification of CSCW

25

Classification of CSCW
Synchronous distributed:
Real time interaction in group E.g.: chat, multimedia conferencing, real time

editing, etc.

Asynchronous distributed:
Exchange of message synchronously in the group E.g.: e-mail, voice mail, etc

26

Classification of CSCW
Synchronous centralized:

Face to face interaction

Eg: application in the meeting room
Asynchronous centralized:

Activities at the same place but different time Eg: news group, electronic bulletin board, etc

Telemedicine
Acquiring medial data from appropriate devices

and transfer it to other systems Medical images:

Computer tomography Magnetic resonance imaging Neucular medicine imaging Ultrasound imaging

Video stream are compressed before sending it to

the network JPEG, warelet, etc

31

Hypermedia
Retrieval services and require point to point or

multipoint to point and switched services Provides user interfaces, powerful, anchoring and presentation tools E.g.: encyclopedia, dictionaries, reference book, etc.
