looking at the WTO

There are a number of ways of looking at the WTO :
Its an organization for liberalizing trade Its a forum for governments to negotiate trade agreements Its a place for them to settle trade disputes It operates a system of trade rules

looking at the WTO

The first step is to talk. The WTO was born out of negotiations, and everything the WTO does is the result of negotiations. The bulk of the WTO's current work comes from the 1986-94 negotiations called the Uruguay Round and earlier negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).
Where countries have faced trade barriers and wanted them lowered, the negotiations have helped to liberalize trade.

WTO helps to settle disputes : This is a third important side to the WTOs work. Trade relations often involve conflicting interests.

Iran Position in the World

History of Iran & WTO

Iran officially submitted an application to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) on 19 July 1996
From July 1996 to May 2001, Irans application had not been considered and application had been blocked by the United States due to concerns about Tehran's nuclear program.

History of Iran & WTO

From May 2001 Irans application for WTO membership has been brought up 22 times. At the 22nd time, on 26 May 2005, Irans application for WTO membership was approved by the organizations members.
Thus the process of Irans membership in the WTO started.

History of Iran & WTO

After that, Iran became WTO observer member and started the process of full membership in the organization
In November 2009 Iran submitted the Foreign Trade Regime Memorandum as the process of accession entered a new phase.
