ATTITUDES

Meaning of attitude Attitudes are evaluative statements either favourable or unfavourable or good or bad of people,concerning objects or events.They reflect how one feels about something Components of the attitude Cognitive:Cognitive component of an attitude is the opinion or belief segment Affective:Affective component of an attitude is the emotional or feeling segment Behavioural:Behavioural component of an attitude is the intention to behave in a certain way towards someone or something

FUNCTIONS OF ATTITUDES

Adjustment function:Attitudes often help people to adjust to their work environment well treated employees tend to develop a positive attitude towards their job,management and organisation.It helps the employees to adjust to the organisation and vice-versa Ego-defensive function:Attitude help people to retain their dignity,self images and serve in justifying the actions and defending the ego Value expressive function:Attitude provide individual with a basis for expressing their values Knowledge based function:Attitude provides standards and frames of references that allow people to understand and perceive the world arround him

CHANGING ATTITUDES
Employees attitude can be changed and sometimes it is in the best interest of management to try to do so eg:if employees believ that their employer does not look after their of the management should try to change their attitude and help to develop a more positive attitude in them.However the process of changing the attitude is not always easy.There are some barrier which have to be overcome they are Prior commitment:When people feel a commitment towards a particular course of action that have already been agreed upon and thus it becomes difficult for them to change or accept the new ways of functioning Insuffisient information:It also acts as a major barrier to change attitude some times people simply see any reason to change their attitude due to unavailability of adequate information

MEASURES OF CHANGING ATTITUDE


Providing new information:Sometimes a dramatic change in attitute is possible only by providing relevant and adequate information to a the person concerned.Scanty and incomplete information can be a major reason brewing negetive feeling and attitude Use of fear:Attitude can be changed through the use of fear people might resort to change their work habit for the fear of unpleasant consequences however the degree of the arousal of fear will have to be taken into consideration as well Resolving discrepancies:Whenever people face a dilemma or conflicting situation they feel confused in choosing a particular course of action like in a case where one is to choose from between two alternative courses of action it is often become difficult for him to decide which is right.If someone helps in pointing out the positive points in favour of the chosen course of action the person might resovle their dilemma Infuence of friends and peers:A very affective way of changing once attitude is through his friends and colleagues.There opinions and recommendations for something often proven to be more important Co-opting:If u want to change the attitude of somebody who belongs to a different group it is often becomes very affective if u can include them in your own group
