WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY

By-Dhiraj.R.Menon

WHAT IS WIFI ?
WiFi -- or, more accurately, "Wi-Fi" -- is a type of wireless networking

protocol that allows devices to communicate without cords or cables.

Wi-Fi is an abbreviation for Wireless Fidelity.

Implemented with some type of remote information transmission system that uses electromagnetic waves such as radio waves for the carriers and this implementation usually takes place at the physical level or "layer" of the network.

In a Wi-Fi network, computers with wifi network cards connect wirelessly

to a wireless router. The router is connected to the Internet by means of a modem, typically a cable or DSL modem.

Why Deploy Wireless?

Cost savings over wire line.
Can not run wire to locations needed. To enable users to bring their own laptop, therefore reducing the cost of owning many PCs. To enable you to easily move PCs.

To be on the leading edge.

Limitations
Security concerns
Interference from other devices like (Bluetooth enabled devices, mobile phones, cordless, Microwaves and other communication devices,)

Lacking high-quality media streaming

Signal Fluctuations

802.11 Wireless Networks

802.11 wireless networks operate in one of two modes- ad-hoc or infrastructure mode

In ad hoc mode, each client communicates directly with the other clients within the network

In infrastructure mode, each client sends all of its communications to a central station, or access point (AP).

802.11 Wireless Standards

802.11a

The 802.11a standard operates in 5 GHz band with a maximum raw data rate of 54 Mbit/s. The range of 802.11a wireless networking equipment is slightly less than that of 802.11b/g because the signals are easily absorbed by walls and other solid objects The 802.11b standard operates in the 2.4 GHz band and has a maximum raw data rate of 11 Mbit/s. 802.11b devices suffer interference from other products (such as microwave ovens, Bluetooth devices and cordless telephones) that also operate in the 2.4 GHz band.

(A) 802.11a Frequency- 5 GHz Typical Data Rate - 23Mbit/s Max Data rate 54 Mbit/s Range 115 feet

802.11b

(B)802.11b Frequency - 2.4 GHz Typical Data Rate - 4.5 Mbit/s Max Data rate 11 Mbit/s Range - 115 feet

802.11g

The 802.11g standard operates in the 2.4 GHz band, like 802.11b, but operates at a maximum raw data rate of 54 Mbit/s. Devices based on the 802.11g standard are fully backward compatible with 802.11b hardware

(C) 802.11g Frequency - 2.4 GHz Typical Data Rate 19 Mbit/s Max Data rate - 54 Mbit/s Range 125 feet

New Wireless Technologies

802.11n is the newly protocol that has come up N) 802.11n Frequency - 5GHz and/or 2.4GHz Typical Data Rate - 74 Mbit/s Max Data rate - 300 Mbit/s (2 streams) Range 230 feet Cisco Aironet 1130AG Series and 1240AG Series Access Points are the latest wireless access points
