By Tonderai Bondezi and Mark Setiawan

Introduction
Topic: Electronic Communication. Focus of presentation: Hallowells theory of the human moment. Electronic communication can have a negative effect on communication. The Brain Chemistry of The Human Moment

What is the human moment?

A theory proposed by Edward Hallowell Requires people to share the same physical space and attention that is both emotional and intellectual. Positive effects include faster, more effective communication between people. Hallowell believes that human moments are disappearing

Disappearance of the human moment

Human moments are quickly becoming scarce due to electronic communication. Lack of tone and body language experienced during human moment can be dangerous. Can lead to the downfall of an organisation. Fords early factories show effectiveness of the human moment.

Toxic Worry
Lack of human moments create worry Some worry can be good, but toxic worry can lead to failure.

The Brain Chemistry of The Human Moment

Anecdotal evidence compiled by Hallowell over 20 years suggests that a deficit of the human moment damages a persons emotional health Other studies have shown that supportive social relationships boost immune system responsiveness and prolong life after heart attacks Scientists hypothesize that in person contact stimulates two important neurotransmitters: dopamine and serotonin

The Human Moment is a REGULATOR

When individuals speak face to face they have to submit to social convention Individuals tend to use the technological approach to communicate as a weapon When the Human moment is taken away peoples primitive instincts can get the better of them

High Tech & High Touch

High Tech requires High Touch. Implementing more technology eliminates trust and familiarity. Ensuring that both the human moment and technology work hand in hand solves the problem.

Combining High Tech & High Touch

Combining high tech and high touch is not easy. Technology always seems to take precedence. A sense of caring develops when you deal with someone face to face because over the internet individuals tend to be precise and cant register peoples emotions. People don't open up on the internet like they do in person.

Conclusion
The human moment can help reduce the vagueness and confusion of electronic communication. It develops confidence and trust as only in person meetings can. Reduces the toxic worry, mental fatigue and disconnection associated with the excessive use of electronics. We cannot move forward successfully without preserving the human moment.
