From mountains and rainforests,

to deserts and coral reefs, Australia has a varied


landscape.
• The Blue Mountains run down the eastern coast of
Australia.

• The strange desert rocks in western Australia are called


Pinnacles.

• The middle of Australia is dry grassland, known as the


Outback.

• The Uluru,
Uluru a huge rock in the desert is a sacred place for
aboriginals, the first people of Australia.

• Tasmania is a small island that lies south of Australia.

• The Great Barrier Reef
LAND
REGIONS
Australia can be divided into three major land
regions:-

1. The Eastern Highlands:- It is


also
known as the Great Dividing Range.
EASTERN HIGHLANDS

2. The Central Lowlands:- It is a


barren region with Lake Eyre, the
lowest point in Australia located
here.

3. The Western Plateau:- A vast,


dry, treeless plateau called the
WESTERN PLATEAU
Nullarbar plain lies along the
southern edge of the region.
MOUNTAIN
• Australia’s highest mountains

rise in the Australian Alps.
MOUNT KOSCIUSZKO
• The Australian Alps are best
known for its Snowy Mountains
and contain Australia’s highest
mountain Mount Kosciuszko.

• The mountain ranges in the


MACDONNELL RANGE
western plateau are lower than
those in Australian Alps with
highest peaks located in the
MacDonnell and Musgrave ranges.

• The Ayers Rock also known as

DESERTS
They cover a third of Australia. The
country has four major deserts:-
• The Simpson Desert
• The Gibson Desert
• The Great Sandy Desert
• The Great Victoria Desert

Most of Australia’s natural lakes
are dry for months or years at a
time. Dry lakes called playas are
common in South Australia and
Western Australia. The largest
playas are in South Australia.

THE GREAT BARRIER REEF
AND RIVERS
The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral
reef and one of Australia’s most popular
tourist attraction.
It holds numerous species of fish, marine
mammals, as well as aquatic plants and
corals.
Australia has two most prominent rivers:
1.The Darling
2.The Murray
Australia has six states, two
major mainland territories . And
other minor territories. The
New South Wales
states are:-

Western Australia

are the Central Highlands followed
by the Midlands.

Tamar and the Mersey rivers flow
in the north of Tasmania
• Tasmania is separated from the
Australian mainland by Bass Strait

Victoria contains many topographically,
geologically and climatically diverse
areas:-

• Wet, temperate climate of Gippsland.

• Snow-covered Victorian alpine areas

• There is an extensive system of rivers


in Victoria such as Murray Ovens,

It covers one-third of the
continent.
• It is bordered largely by
desert to the east.
• Western Australia is bound
by 12,500 km. of the world’s
pristine coastline to the west.
