    It is a software consists of computer programs that attempt to identify, thwart and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious software (malware).

    By the end of 1989 there were 19 antivirus in the market, but all failed. The first ever successful antivirus was introduced by Network Association Inc. in early 1990, known as Viruscan. Its price was 120 US dollars.

    PREVENTION
    Commonly known as Automatic alert. Very first step and goes on executing till system runs. It monitors all of the computers incoming and outgoing files, analyzes each new document that is stored on a floppy disk, downloaded or sent via e-mail. Checks all viruses codes which are there in its dictionary.

    DETECTION
    Commonly known as Scanning. This process is either done manually by user or by software itself. By default scanning of My Computer begins when system starts. Matching codes with its dictionary.

    RECOVERY
    Commonly known as Cleaning. This part tries to heal the corrupted part of file, software, hard-disk, etc. Try to remove additional codes written by virus. Either move it to Quarantine or suggest to delete the whole file. Quarantine is first preference.

    How it detects?
    If code found to be similar with virus codes in dictionary.

    Heuristic technology.
    1)Application that contains formatting codes. 2)Applications which produces unwanted executable files. 3)Search for traces of virus.

    MISCONCEPTIONS
    Deletion of some virus is not done. -Trend Micro. More than one antivirus is not good for system. -Ankit Fadia. Systems with internet connection are not safe. -Ankit Fadia. An antivirus cannot be virus. -Grisoft.

    VERIFICATION

    1)The test was made on 16 April 2006, using Windows XP Professional SP1 on a P4 2600 MHz, 512MB DDRAM. 2) All programs tested had the latest versions, upgrades and updates and they were tested using their full scanning capabilities e.g. heuristics, full scan etc.
