Characteristics of Doshis buildings: -The building should have natural light, air, movement. - The building will gradually widen towards the ground through platforms, terraces and steps. -The building mass will integrate roof, rainwater, cascades, water bodies, natural landscapes, gardens, foliage. - The external finish of the building will express one homogeneous mass but will have adequate details, textures, surface modulations. - Not all movements in the building will be symmetrical but will shift axis to give unexpected experiences and provide dual expressions. -The main arrival to the building will be at a higher level with a provision for a lower entry, to express duality. - Buried spaces, raised volumes.

SANGATH,
Ahmedabad
Site Area - 2346 m2 Project Cost , Rs. 0.6 Million ( 1981 )
- His own office, Sangath, is composed of vaulted interior spaces linked both internally and externally by gentle changes in level. Here the landscape forms an integral part of the architecture, and Sangath rises up from the ground without actually appearing to leave it. - Tying the low base and the high roof vaults evokes in an Indian mind a sense of seeing the proportions of the deity's face with the crown and the tall shikhara of a temple with its low base.

In Indian Temples, there is a series of layers stacked one above the other: the vertical and horizontal scale is broken totally. The idea that you break to human accessibility is fundamental to Indian thought transitional spaces and thresholds are characteristics Duality is a major Characteristic too..

Sangath has two entrances, one at level + 1.8 m and the other at 1.m. Both finally reach the same place, but through differ ent paths.
Some precise features of Sangath show influences of different architects on Doshi. -pool comes from Le Corbusiers curves in Millowners building. - Amphitheater's steps echo Wrights Talisen and Alvar Altos ideas. - China mosaic recalls Gaudis ideas.

- Water splashes inspired by salk Laboratories in California by Louis Kahn.

the tools employed at Fatehpur Sikri to simultaneously functionally divide and unite the various building in a complex are the same as those used in planning temples in South India
In the mornings and evenings, the suns golden rays are reflected in the glazed windows, and the long corridors with main central court surrounded by classroom walls give a feeling of being in a place not unknown to ones inner being.

the design also included long and unusually high (three storeyed) corridors with inn umerable vistas of focal points generating a dialogue with one's self. These corridors are sometimes seem open, sometimes with only pergolas and sometimes partly cov ered with skylight. To further heighten the spatial experience, the width of the corridors was modulated in many places to allow casual sitting, interaction or moving forwards to once destination or more towards.
