2-1) Grammar : Bunpou


<Pattern1>

N1 (am,is,are ) N2 N1 wa N2 desu
For example

I am Kazu Emoto Watashi wa Emoto Kazu desu


Note : WA has no English meaning or equivalent. Its function is to separate the subject nominative (N1) to the predicate nominative (N2) in the sentence. It indicates that word or words before it is the logical subject of sentence. Desu is the verb in English gramer. Its meaning is ( am,is,are ). Japanese has no distinction between singular and plural form.

N1 (am not, is not, are not ) N2 N1 wa N2 dewa arimasen


For example

I am not Takuya Ogawa Watashi wa Ogawa Takuya dewa arimasen


Note : Dewa arimasen is negative form of Desu which means ( am not, is not, are not ).

For example

I was teacher Watashi wa Sensei deshita


Note : Deshita is the past tense of be-verb Desu. Its meaning is (was, were).

N1 (was not,were not) N2 N1 wa N2 dewa arimasen deshita


For example

I was not student Watashi wa Gakusei dewa arimasen deshita


Note : Dewa arimasen deshita is the past negative form of be-verb Desu. which means (was not, were not).

For example

E : Are you Mr. Usui? J : Anata wa Usui san desu ka?


Answer

E :Yes, I am Usui J :Hai watashi wa Usui desu

Note : KA is a question marker in japanese. It is like question mark sign in English. Sentence ends with KA is an interrogative sentence, it asks the information about the subject. SAN is an address of certain person as a sign of respect to the other party. It is not used with own name. it is used when stating the name of either second of third person. It is either Mr.,Miss, of Mrs.
