When a zooplankton net is used to strain copepods and other zooplankton from the water, a community of smaller organisms remains that is much more difficult to sample and study. While the net zooplankton are a prominent part of the food web supporting fish, the nanoplankton and picoplankton perform a different role in the ecosystem. Bacteria are an important part of this community; one of their roles is to break down complex organic molecules contained in particulate detritus and dissolved organic matter (see Chapter 6), releasing inorganic nutrients (e.g., compounds of nitrogen, phosphorus, and pornssium) that can be recycled into new phytoplankton production. At the same time, the bacte-ria themselves ingest food derived from the detritus and dissolved organic matter and are able to grow and multiply. A review of bacterial production in a range of marine and freshwater habitats (Cole et al. 1988) showed that when measured on a volume basis, bacterial production averaged 20% of plankt
