- (): The weapon familiar is an alternative class feature for hexblades
who want a little more blade in their hexing. In the hands of a hexblade, this bonded weapon
becomes a conduit for the dire magic and bad luck that is his trademark. In the hands of anyone
else, the weapon familiar is a rotten day waiting to happen.
Level: 1st.
Replaces: If you select this class feature, you do not gain a familiar at level 4th.

Benefit: In a ritual that takes 1 day and 100 gp of material, you can designate a particular
melee weapon your weapon familiar. You must be proficient with the weapon. If you later find a
better weapon (such as a masterwork or magic weapon) that you wish to make your weapon
familiar, you can spend another day and 100 gp to perform the ritual again. At the end of the
ritual, the old weapon loses all its familiar benefits, and the new weapon becomes the familiar.
If your current weapon familiar is ever destroyed, you must attempt a DC 15 Fortitude saving
throw. Failure means you lose 200 xp per hexblade level; success reduces the loss to one-half that
amount (Mettle cannot be used to negate this loss).
Hexblade Enhancement Hardness/hp Special
Level Bonus Bonus
1st-2nd +1 +1/+2 hp Cursed blade
3rd-4th +1 +2/+4 hp Jinx strike
5th-6th +2 +3/+6 hp
7th-8th +2 +4/+8 hp Channel spell
9th-10th +3 +5/+10 hp Speak with weapon
11th-12th +3 +6/+12 hp Sword swallow
13th-14th +4 +7/+14 hp
15th-16th +4 +8/+16 hp Bite back
17th-18th +5 +9/+18 hp
19th-20th +5 +10/+20 hp Double whammy
You cannot have a weapon familiar and common familiar at the same time.
Enhancement Bonus: A weapon familiar gains an enhancement bonus according to your
hexblade class levels. This bonus does not stack with any existing enhancement bonus the
weapon may have.Cathar, a 7th level hexblade, currently has a longsword weapon familiar. His
hexblade levels grant it a +2 enhancement bonus. While adventuring, Cathar finds a +1 keen
rapier and decides to make that his weapon familiar. He performs the ritual, and at the end of the
week, the longsword becomes a mundane item and the rapier becomes a +2 keen rapier weapon
familiar (not a +3).Hardness/Hit Points: As you rise in level, your weapon familiar becomes
increasingly durable, improving both its hardness and hit points by the amount shown on the
table.
Cursed Blade (Su): In the hands of anyone other than you, the weapon familiars enhancement
bonus instead becomes a luck penalty of equal magnitude. The gloating hobgoblin captain claims
captured Cathar's rapier for his own. When the hobgoblin tries to use it against his prisoner, the
sword now acts as a -2 keen rapier.
Jinx Strike (Su): If you successfully damage an opponent with your weapon familiar, you can
choose to trade one point of its enhancement bonus to impose a -1 luck penalty to your
opponents Armor Class. This penalty lasts as long as you threaten the target with your weapon
familiar, or until you dismiss the penalty with a swift action. If either you or the target moves out
of threat range, the penalty is automatically dismissed. If your enhancement bonus is high
enough, you can use Jinx Strike against multiple opponents, or against the same target multiple
times, up to the limit of the weapon familiars bonus. The effects of Jinx Strike stack. Cathar,
reunited with his weapon familiar, strikes the hobgoblin captain in melee and deals 5 points of
damage. He uses Jinx Strike to reduce his sword to a +1 keen rapier, and the hobgoblin captain
takes a -1 luck penalty to AC. In the next round, Cathar can try to hit the captain again to raise
that penalty to -2 (lowering his rapier to +0), strike the nearby lieutenant with a separate Jinx
Strike, or reclaim the bonus to deal out more damage. If the hobgoblin moves to an area Cathar
does not threaten, his AC is restored (but so is Cathar's rapier).
Channel spell (Sp): As part of a full attack action, you can cast any hexblade spell you know with
a range of touch through your weapon familiar. You cannot channel a spell that is higher in level
than your weapon familiars current enhancement bonus. So, if your weapon familiar normally
has a bonus of +2, but currently has only a +1 because you are maintaining a Jinx Strike, you can
only channel 1st level hexblade spells.
Speak with weapon (Sp): There is a resonance between crossed swords, and a skilled hexblade
can hear the echoes. As a move action, you can learn the magical qualities (if any) of one weapon
being wielded by an opponent who threatens you in melee, and whom you threaten with your
weapon familiar.
Sword Swallow (Su): If you successfully damage an opponent with your weapon familiar, you
can choose to trade one point of its enhancement bonus to suppress one point of your opponents
weapons enhancement bonus (if any). This penalty lasts as long as you threaten the target with
your weapon familiar, or until you dismiss the penalty with a swift action. If either you or the
target moves out of range, the penalty is automatically dismissed. If your enhancement bonus is
high enough, you can use Sword Swallow against multiple opponents, or against the same target
multiple times, up to the limit of the weapon familiars bonus. The effects of Sword Swallow
stack. Sword Swallow and Jinx Strike effects can be maintained simultaneously, but draw from
the same enhancement bonus (so choose carefully!).
Bite Back (Su): Anyone other than you who tries to wield your weapon familiar is in for even
more surprises. Starting with the second attack, every other attack made with the weapon
familiar is rolled against the wielders own Armor Class. If the roll succeeds, the wielder takes
damage as if he had attacked himself.
Double Whammy (Su): Misery loves company! Any time you roll a natural 1 while attacking
with your weapon familiar, you may immediately choose one opponent that you threaten in
melee. For the next round, that opponent suffers a luck penalty to all attacks equal to the weapon
familiars full enhancement bonus.
