The modern name Aosta is derived from the ancient Augusta
Praetoria, — so called from the fact that Augustus made it a
station of his Praetorian cohorts. The Salassi — the inhabitants of
the Val d'Aoste — paid the penalty for having stolen the
Emperor's baggage by being sold as slaves.
