грамматических), правильность описания их значений и их разнообразие;
предложенное студентом упражнение на рассматриваемую лексику (1 (миним.) – 2

The Russian word “история” has several English equivalents:
1) history – the course of development of smth.;
2) story – a narrative, a tale, an account;
3) event – an occurrence, an incident, a happening.
There are two set-phrases: “A funny thing happened to him” which is translated as “С ним
произошла забавная история” and “There’s a pretty kettle of fish” which is translated as “Вот
так история”.
2. Worth, n. – value, significance. This noun can be used in a set-phrase “to be of some / great
/ no worth” which means “to be of some / great / no significance, value”.
Worth, adj. – having a value, especially in money, e.g. Our house is worth about $100 000.
This word can be used in two set-phrases “to be worth doing smth.” and “to be worth while
doing smth.”. They mean the same, namely “to be interesting, enjoyable enough to be
performed; to be advisable to be performed”, but they differ grammatically. In the case with
“to be worth doing smth.” the thing that should be performed is used as a subject. In the case
with “to be worth while doing smth.” the pronoun “it” serves as a subject and the thing that
should be performed follows the ing-form.
Worthy, adj. – respectable, morally good, decent, virtuous. This adjective can be used in
the set-phrase “to be worthy of smth.” which means “to deserve smth.”.
Unworthy, adj. – wicked, evil, undeserving.
3. Piece, n. – 1) a part, a bit, a section. In this meaning the noun has two synonyms “a slice”
and “a lump”. A slice is a thin, flat part cut off from anything. A lump is a small specially
shaped or shapeless part.
The noun can be used in a set-phrase “to pieces” which means “to bits, apart, asunder”.
2) an object, an item, an article;
3) money made of metal, small change. In this meaning the noun has a
synonym “coin” which is more often used in everyday speech than “piece”.
The noun can be used in the compound “masterpiece” which means “an outstanding work
of art; an excellent example of smth.”
4. Human, adj. – connected with people, typical or characteristic of people.
Humane, adj. – kind, compassionate, sympathetic, tolerant. The noun has an antonym, it’s
“cruel”.
Inhuman, adj. – unkind, heartless, brutal, merciless.
Humanity, n. (uncountable) – 1) people in general. In this meaning the noun has a
synonym “manʹkind”. We shouldn’t confuse the latter noun with the noun “ ʹmankind” which
means “all the males, the male population”.
2) kindness, compassion, sympathy, tolerance.
If we use the noun in the plural form and with the definite article, it means “sciences
studying people and different aspects of their life”. It has a synonym “the Arts”.
