ENGLISH
1. Ivan Aivazovsky
3. He was born, raised, and lived most of his life in the seaside town of Feodosia (Crimea,
Ukraine). Since he was a child he was in love with the sea; he loved the water element in
all its manifestations, which determined the direction of his art—he became a brilliant
marine painter. He managed to grasp the technique of images of water in all its colors,
movements, in shimmering light, in a variety of conditions—from total the calm
("Constantinople under the Moonlight" and "The Night in Naples") to violent storms ("The
Ninth Wave" and "Shipwreck").
4. Aivazovsky had an amazing memory—he could capture a moment that struck him after a
considerable period of time. "It is inconceivable," he said, "to write a flash of lightning or a
surge of wave from nature (at the happening moment), the movements of live elements
are elusive for the brush." The artist was the best in depicting images of the water
element. He received more modest results trying to write simple landscapes and showed
a complete helplessness portraying a man.

5. The talent of Aivazovsky opened up very early. In 1833 he entered the Imperial Academy
of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg. And soon after in 1837 he was awarded a gold medal for
three works of marine views. In 1840 he was sent to continue his education in Italy where
he got acquainted with classical art in the museums of Rome, Florence, and Naples,
where he worked very fruitfully. In a very short time he became the most famous artist in
Europe, having received the approval of the artist Ivanov, the writer Gogol, the English
marine painter Turner, and a huge number of spectators.
6. Being nominated the artist of the Naval Headquarters, Aivazovsky was involved in some
military operations creating a lot of pictures with battle scenes. One of his most famous
works is "The Chesmensky Battle" (1848).
7. Aivazovsky was also known as a generous philanthropist. A lot of money he invested into
the improvement of the city. An Archaeological Museum in Feodosia was built because
of his money. In his studio in Feodosia were "born" artists—Kuindzhi and Bogayevsky
Lagorio. His house and studio were visited by Repin, Shishkin, a famous collector
Tretyakov, Polish violinist Wieniawski, and the writer Anton Chekhov.

CULTURAL INSIGHT
Anton Checkov
We admire Aivazovsky, a brilliant marine painter, the creator of an art gallery in Feodosia, and

a generous philanthropist who did so much for his city. In 1888, the writer Checkov visited his
estate having made his impressions of this visit.
Checkov wrote that the estate was rich like from Persian fairy tales. The painter himself was a
strong old man of seventy-five years old, looking like a warm-hearted Armenian, full of
himself, bishop, naive grandfather, and Othello all the same time. He was married to a young
woman whom he kept on a short leash. He pulled out his soft hands with dignity, like a high
level general. He had a complex nature that was worthy of attention, but he was quite
superficial. In his whole life he hadn't read a single book, even though he was a friend of
Pushkin, and painted "Ruslan and Ludmilla" together with Glinka. When he was offered to
read, he said, "Why bother? I have my own opinion on everything anyway."
In 2007 the painting of Aivazovsky, "The Ship by the Rocks of Gibraltar," was auctioned for a
record price for the artist's paintings, 2.7 million pounds.
