В ворота гостиницы губернского города NN въехала довольно красивая
рессорная небольшая бричка, в какой ездят холостяки: отставные
подполковники, штабс-капитаны, помещики, имеющие около сотни
душ крестьян, словом, все те, которых называют господами средней
руки. В бричке сидел господин, не красавец, но и не дурной наружности,
ни слишком толст, ни слишком тонок; нельзя сказать, чтобы стар,
однако ж и не так, чтобы слишком молод. Въезд его не произвел в городе
совершенно никакого шума и не был сопровожден ничем особенным;
только два русские мужика, стоявшие у дверей кабака против гостиницы,
сделали кое-какие замечания, относившиеся, впрочем, более к экипажу,
чем к сидевшему в нем. “Вишь ты, — сказал один другому, — вон какое
колесо! Что ты думаешь, доедет то колесо, если б случилось, в Москву
или не доедет?” — “Доедет”, — отвечал другой. “А в Казань-то, я думаю,
не доедет?” — “В Казань не доедет”, — отвечал другой. Этим разговор
и кончился. Да еще, когда бричка подъехала к гостинице, встретился
молодой человек в белых канифасовых панталонах, весьма узких и
коротких, во фраке с покушеньями на моду, из-под которого видна была
манишка, застегнутая тульскою булавкою с бронзовым пистолетом. Мо-
лодой человек оборотился назад, посмотрел экипаж, придержал рукою
картуз, чуть не слетевший от ветра, и пошел своей дорогой.
Когда экипаж въехал на двор, господин был встречен трактирным
слугою, или половым, как их называют в русских трактирах, живым
и вертлявым до такой степени, что даже нельзя было рассмотреть,
какое у него было лицо. Он выбежал проворно с салфеткой в руке, весь
длинный и в длинном демикотонном сюртуке со спинкою чуть не на
самом затылке, встряхнул волосами и повел проворно господина вверх
по всей деревянной галдарее показывать ниспосланный ему богом по-
кой. Покой был известного рода; ибо гостиница была тоже известного
рода, то есть именно такая, как бывают гостиницы в губернских горо-
дах, где за два рубля в сутки проезжающие получают покойную комнату
с тараканами, выглядывающими, как чернослив, из всех углов, и дверью
в соседнее помещение, всегда заставленною комодом, где устроивается

Chapter I
T hrough the gates of an inn in the provincial town of NN there rolled in a
smart chaise — a light spring-carriage of the sort affected by bachelors,
retired lieutenant-colonels, staff-captains, landowners with about a hundred
serfs, in short, all persons who rank as gentlemen of the intermediate category.
In the chaise was seated a gentleman—a man who, though not handsome, was
not ill-favored, not over-fat, and not over-thin. Also, though not over-elderly,
he was not over-young. His arrival produced no stir in the town, and was
accompanied by no particular incident, beyond that a couple of Russian pea-
sants who happened to be standing at the door of a dramshop facing the hotel
exchanged a few comments with reference to the equipage rather than to the
individual who was seated in it. “My eye,” said one to the other, “isn’t that a
wheel! What do you think? Would that wheel, if so it chanced, get to Moscow
or would it never get there?” “It would,” replied the other. “But to Kazan now,
I don’t think it would get there?” “It wouldn’t get to Kazan,” replied the other.
With that the conversation ended. Moreover, as the chaise was approaching
the inn, it was met by a young man in a pair of very short, very tight breeches
of white dimity, a quasi-fashionable frockcoat, and a shirt-front fastened with
a Tula breastpin adorned with a bronze pistol. The young man turned round,
eyed the chaise, clapped his hand to his cap (which was in danger of being
removed by the wind) and resumed his way.
When the vehicle drove into the yard, the gentleman was met by an inn
servant, or a polovoy, as they are called in Russian taverns—an individual of
such nimble and brisk movement that even to distinguish the character of his
face was impossible. He ran out nimbly with a dinner napkin in his hand, a
long figure wearing a long frock-coat made of some cotton mixture with the
waist almost up to the nape of his neck, tossed his locks and nimbly led the
gentleman upstairs along the whole length of a wooden gallery to show him
to the room Providence had sent him. The room was of the familiar type, for
the hotel, too, was of the familiar type, that is it was precisely like the hotels
in provincial towns where for two rubles a day travelers get a quiet room with
black beetles peeping out of every corner like prunes, and a door, always
barricaded with a chest of drawers, into the next apartment, of which the

один самовар не был с черною, как смоль, бородою.
Пока приезжий господин осматривал свою комнату, внесены были его
пожитки: прежде всего чемодан из белой кожи, несколько поистаскан-
ный, показывавший, что был не в первый раз в дороге. Чемодан внесли
кучер Селифан, низенький человек в тулупчике, и лакей Петрушка,
малый лет тридцати, в просторном подержанном сюртуке, как видно с
барского плеча, малый немного суровый на взгляд, с очень крупными
губами и носом. Вслед за чемоданом внесен был небольшой ларчик
красного дерева, с штучными выкладками из карельской березы,
сапожные колодки и завернутая в синюю бумагу жареная курица.
Когда всё это было внесено, кучер Селифан отправился на конюшню
возиться около лошадей, а лакей Петрушка стал устроиваться в малень-
кой передней, очень темной конурке, куда уже успел притащить свою
шинель и вместе с нею какой-то свой собственный запах, который
был сообщен и принесенному вслед за тем мешку с разным лакейским
туалетом. В этой конурке он приладил к стене узенькую трехногую
кровать, накрыв ее небольшим подобием тюфяка, убитым и плоским,
как блин, и, может быть, так же замаслившимся, как блин, который
удалось ему вытребовать у хозяина гостиницы.
Покамест слуги управлялись и возились, господин отправился в
общую залу. Какие бывают эти общие залы — всякой проезжающий
знает очень хорошо: те же стены, выкрашенные масляной краской,
потемневшие вверху от трубочного дыма и залосненные снизу спинами
разных проезжающих, а еще более туземными купеческими, ибо купцы
по торговым дням приходили сюда сам-шест и сам-сём испивать свою
известную пару чаю; тот же закопченный потолок, та же копченая
люстра со множеством висящих стеклышек, которые прыгали и звенели
всякий раз, когда половой бегал по истертым клеенкам, помахивая бойко
подносом, на котором сидела такая же бездна чайных чашек, как птиц
на морском берегу; те же картины во всю стену, писанные масляными
красками; словом, всё то же, что и везде; только и разницы, что на одной
картине изображена была нимфа с такими огромными грудями, каких
читатель, верно, никогда не видывал. Подобная игра природы, впрочем,
случается на разных исторических картинах, неизвестно в какое время,
откуда и кем привезенных к нам в Россию, иной раз даже нашими
вельможами, любителями искусств, накупившими их в Италии, по со-
вету везших их курьеров.

occupant, a quiet and taciturn but excessively inquisitive person, is interested
in finding out every detail relating to the traveler. The outer façade of the inn
corresponded with its internal peculiarities: it was a very long building of
two storeys; the lower storey had not been stuccoed but left dark-red brick,
which had become darker still from the violent changes of the weather, and
also somewhat dirty per se; the upper storey had been painted the invariable
yellow tint; in the basement there were shops with horse-collars, ropes, and
bread-rings. In the corner one of these shops, or rather in the window of it,
there was a man who sold hot spiced drinks, with a samovar of red copper and
a face as red as his samovar, so that from a distance one might have imagined
that there were two samovars in the window, if one of them had not had a
beard as black as pitch.
While the new-comer was inspecting his room, his luggage was carried
up: first of all, a portmanteau of white leather, somewhat worn and evidently
not on its first journey. The portmanteau was brought in by his coachman
Selifan, little man in a sheepskin, and his footman Petrushka, a fellow of
about thirty, somewhat sullen looking, with very thick lips and nose, wearing
a rather shabby loose frockcoat that had evidently been his master’s. After
the portmanteau they carried up a small mahogany chest inlaid with karelian
birch, a pair of boot-trees, and a roast chicken wrapped up in blue paper.
When all this had been brought in, the coachman Selifan went to the stables
to look after the horses, while the footman Petrushka proceeded to install
himself in a little lobby, a very dark little cupboard, into which he had al-
ready conveyed his overcoat and with it his own peculiar odor, which was
communicated also to the sack containing various articles for his flunkey
toilet, which he brought up next. In this cupboard he put up against the
wall a narrow three-legged bedstead, covering it with a small travesty of a
mattress, crushed as flat as a pancake, and perhaps as greasy, too, which he
had succeeded in begging from the hotel-keeper.
While the servants were busy arranging things, their master went to the
common room. Every traveler knows very well what these common rooms are
like. There were the usual painted walls, blackened above by smoke from the
chimney, and glossy below from the backs of travelers of all sorts and more
particularly of local merchants, for on market days merchants used to come
here, in parties of six or seven, to drink their regular two cups of tea; there
was the usual grimy ceiling, the usual smutty chandelier with a multitude of
little hanging glass lustres which danced and tinkled every time the waiter
ran over the shabby oilcloth, briskly flourishing a tray with as many teacups
perched on it as birds on the seashore; there were the usual pictures, painted
in oil, all over the walls; in short, everything was the same as it is everywhere,
the only difference was that in one of the pictures a nymph was portrayed
with a bosom more immense than the reader has probably ever seen. Such
freaks of nature, however, occur in all sorts of historical pictures which have
been imported into Russia, there is no knowing at what date, from what place
or by whom, though sometimes they are brought us by our grand gentlemen,
lovers of the arts, who have purchased them in Italy on the advice of their
couriers.

обед. Покамест ему подавались разные обычные в трактирах блюда, как-
то: щи с слоеным пирожком, нарочно сберегаемым для проезжающих
в течение нескольких неделей, мозги с горошком, сосиски с капустой,
пулярку жареную, огурец соленый и вечный слоеный сладкий пиро-
жок, всегда готовый к услугам; покамест ему всё это подавалось, и
разогретое и просто холодное, он заставил слугу, или полового, рас-
сказывать всякий вздор о том, кто содержал прежде трактир и кто те-
перь, и много ли дает дохода, и большой ли подлец их хозяин; на что
половой по обыкновению отвечал: “О, большой, сударь, мошенник”.
Как в просвещенной Европе, так и в просвещенной России есть теперь
весьма много почтенных людей, которые без того не могут покушать
в трактире, чтоб не поговорить с слугою, а иногда даже забавно по-
шутить над ним. Впрочем, приезжий делал не всё пустые вопросы; он
с чрезвычайною точностию расспросил, кто в городе губернатор, кто
председатель палаты, кто прокурор, — словом, не пропустил ни одного
значительного чиновника; но еще с большею точностию, если даже не
с участием, расспросил обо всех значительных помещиках, сколько кто
имеет душ крестьян, как далеко живет от города, какого даже характера
и как часто приезжает в город; расспросил внимательно о состоянии
края: не было ли каких болезней в их губернии, повальных горячек,
убийственных каких-нибудь лихорадок, оспы и тому подобного, и всё
так обстоятельно и с такою точностию, которая показывала более,
чем одно простое любопытство. В приемах своих господин имел что-
то солидное и высмаркивался чрезвычайно громко. Неизвестно, как
он это делал, но только нос его звучал, как труба. Это, по-видимому,
совершенно невинное достоинство приобрело, однако ж, ему много
уважения со стороны трактирного слуги, так что он всякий раз, когда
слышал этот звук, встряхивал волосами, выпрямливался почтитель-
нее и, нагнувши с вышины свою голову, спрашивал: не нужно ли
чего? После обеда господин выкушал чашку кофею и сел на диван,
подложивши себе за спину подушку, которую в русских трактирах
вместо эластической шерсти набивают чем-то чрезвычайно похожим
на кирпич и булыжник. Тут начал он зевать и приказал отвести себя в
свой нумер, где, прилегши, заснул два часа. Отдохнувши, он написал на
лоскутке бумажки, по просьбе трактирного слуги, чин, имя и фамилию,
для сообщения, куда следует, в полицию. На бумажке половой, спус-
каясь с лестницы, прочитал по складам следующее: “Коллежский со-
ветник Павел Иванович Чичиков, помещик, по своим надобностям”.
Когда половой всё еще разбирал по складам записку, сам Павел
Иванович Чичиков отправился посмотреть город, которым был, как
казалось, удовлетворен, ибо нашел, что город никак не уступал другим
губернским городам: сильно била в глаза желтая краска на каменных

The gentleman removed his cap and unwound from his neck a woolen shawl
of rainbow hues such as married men are provided with by their wives, who
add to those gifts suitable exhortations about wrapping themselves up. Who
does the same for bachelors I cannot say for certain, God only knows: I have
never worn such a shawl myself. When he had removed the shawl the gentle-
man ordered dinner. While they were serving him with various dishes usual
in taverns, such as cabbage soup with little pies of puff paste purposely kept
for weeks in readiness for travelers, brains with peas, sausages with cabbage,
roast pullet, salt pickles, and the eternal sweet puffs which are always at one’s
service; while all these things were being set before him, some warmed up
and some cold, he made the servant, or waiter, tell him all sorts of foolish
things, such as who used to keep the tavern and who kept it now, and whether
it was profitable and whether his master were a great rascal, to which the
waiter made the usual answer: “Oh, he is a great swindler, sir.” Both in
enlightened Europe and in enlightened Russia there are nowadays many
worthy persons who cannot eat in a tavern without talking to waiters and
sometimes even making amusing jokes at their expense. The questions put
by the traveler were however not altogether foolish. He inquired with marked
particularity who was the governor, who was the president of the court of
justice, who was the public prosecutor, in short he did not omit to inquire
about a single one of the more important officials of the town, and with even
greater particularity, even with marked interest he inquired about all the
country gentlemen of consequence: how many souls of serfs each owned, how
far from the town he lived, what was his character and how often he visited
the town. He made careful inquiries concerning the state of the region, whe-
ther there were any diseases in the province such as epidemics, killing fevers,
small-pox, and such like, and all this with a preciseness and attention to detail
which betrayed more than simple curiosity. The gentleman had something
respectable in his manners and he blew his nose extremely loud. I cannot say
how he did it but his nose resounded like a trumpet. This apparently innocent
merit gained him much respect from the waiter, for every time he heard the
sound he shook his locks, drew himself up more respectfully, and bending
his head inquired whether he wanted anything. After dinner the gentleman
drank a cup of coffee and sat on the sofa, propping his back against one of
those cushions which in Russian inns are stuffed not with supple wool but
with something extraordinarily like bricks and pebbles. At this point he began
to yawn and bade the waiter take him to his room, where he lay down and
slept for a couple of hours. When he had rested he wrote, at the request of the
waiter, on a sheet of paper his rank, his Christian name, and his surname to
be presented in due course to the police. As he went downstairs the waiter spel-
led out on the sheet of paper as follows: “Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov, collegiate
councilor and landowner, traveling on his private business”. While the waiter
was still engaged in spelling out the note, Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov went off
to look at the town, with which he was, it appears, satisfied, for he considered
that it was in no way inferior to other provincial towns: the yellow paint on

входящие в последнем акте на сцену. Игроки были изображены с
прицелившимися киями, несколько вывороченными назад руками и
косыми ногами, только что сделавшими на воздухе антраша. Под всем
этим было написано: “И вот заведение”. Кое-где просто на улице стояли
столы с орехами, мылом и пряниками, похожими на мыло; где харчевня
с нарисованною толстою рыбою и воткнутою в нее вилкою. Чаще же
всего заметно было потемневших двуглавых государственных орлов,
которые теперь уже заменены лаконическою надписью: “Питейный
дом”. Мостовая везде была плоховата. Он заглянул и в городской сад,
который состоял из тоненьких дерев, дурно принявшихся, с подпорка-
ми внизу в виде треугольников, очень красиво выкрашенных зеленою
масляною краскою. Впрочем, хотя эти деревца были не выше тростника,
о них было сказано в газетах при описании иллюминации, что город
наш украсился, благодаря попечению гражданского правителя, садом,
состоящим из тенистых, широковетвистых дерев, дающих прохладу
в знойный день, и что при этом было очень умилительно глядеть,
как сердца граждан трепетали в избытке благодарности и струили
потоки слез в знак признательности к господину градоначальнику.
Расспросивши подробно будочника, куда можно пройти ближе, если
понадобится к собору, к присутственным местам, к губернатору, он
отправился взглянуть на реку, протекавшую посредине города, дорогою
оторвал прибитую к столбу афишу с тем, чтобы, пришедши домой,
прочитать ее хорошенько, посмотрел пристально на проходившую по
деревянному тротуару даму недурной наружности, за которой следовал
мальчик в военной ливрее, с узелком в руке, и, еще раз окинувши всё
глазами, как бы с тем, чтобы хорошо припомнить положение места,
отправился домой прямо в свой нумер, поддерживаемый слегка на
лестнице трактирным слугою. Накушавшись чаю, он уселся перед сто-
лом, велел подать себе свечу, вынул из кармана афишу, поднес ее к свече
и стал читать, прищуря немного правый глаз. Впрочем, замечательного
немного было в афишке: давалась драма г. Коцебу, в которой Ролла иг-
рал г. Поплёвин, Кору — девица Зяблова, прочие лица были и того менее
замечательны; однако же он прочел их всех, добрался даже до цены
партера и узнал, что афиша была напечатана в типографии губернского
правления, потом переворотил на другую сторону узнать, нет ли и там
чего-нибудь, но, не нашедши ничего, протер глаза, свернул опрятно и
положил в свой ларчик, куда имел обыкновение складывать всё, что ни

the brick houses was extremely glaring, while the wood houses were a modest
dark grey. The houses were of one storey, of two storeys, and of one and a half
storeys with the everlasting mezzanine which provincial architects think so
beautiful. In some parts these houses looked lost in the midst of a street as
wide as a field and unending wooden fences; in other places they were all
crowded together, and here more traffic and pictorial art were noticeable.
There were shop signboards with bread-rings or boots on them, almost
effaced by the rain, with here and there a picture of blue trousers and the
name of some Arsaw tailor; in one place was a shop with caps, and the
inscription: “Vassily Fyodorov, foreigner”; in another place there was depic-
ted a billiard table with two players in dress coats such as are worn in our
theatres by the visitors who come onto the stage in the last act. The players
were represented taking aim with the cues, their arms a little drawn back
and their legs crooked as though they had just made an entrechat in the air.
Under all this was inscribed: “And here is the establishment”. Here and there,
tables covered with nuts, soap, and cakes that looked like soap, stood simply
in the street; and here and there was a tavern with a fat fish and a fork stuck
in it on the signboard. More often than anything he observed, somewhat
darkened by age, the two-headed imperial eagles which are nowadays re-
placed by the laconic inscription: “Drinking House”. The pavement was
everywhere in a bad state. He glanced too into the town park which consisted
of skimpy and drooping trees, supported by props put in triangles and very
handsomely painted green. Though these trees were no higher than a reed, yet
in describing some illuminations the newspapers had said of them that: “Our
town has, thanks to the care of the municipal authorities, been adorned with
a park of spreading shady trees that provide coolness on a sultry day”, and
that “it was extremely touching to observe how the hearts of the citizens were
quivering with excess of gratitude and their eyes were brimming with tears in
appreciation of the Mayor”. After minutely questioning a policeman as to the
nearest way to the cathedral, to the government offices and to the governor’s,
he went to have a look at the river which flowed through the middle of the
town; on the way he tore off a poster affixed to a pole in order to read it
carefully on returning home, stared at a lady of prepossessing exterior who
was walking along the wooden side-walk, followed by a boy in military livery
with a parcel in his hand, and after once more scrutinizing it all as though to
remember precisely the position of everything, he went home and straight up
to his room, slightly assisted up the staircase by the waiter. After drinking
tea he sat down before his table, ordered a candle, took the poster out of his
pocket, held it to the light and began to read it, slightly screwing up his right
eye. There was little of interest in the poster however: a play of Kotzebue’s
was being performed with Poplyovin in the part of Rolla and Mademoiselle
Zyablova in that of Cora, and the other performers were even less noteworthy;
he read through all their names, however, and even went on to the price of the
orchestra stalls, and learned that the poster had been printed at the printing
press of the government department of the province. Then he turned it over
to find out if there was anything of interest on the other side, but, finding
nothing, rubbed his eyes, folded it up neatly and put it in his chest, in which

Весь следующий день посвящен был визитам; приезжий отправился
делать визиты всем городским сановникам. Был с почтением у губер-
натора, который, как оказалось, подобно Чичикову, был ни толст,
ни тонок собой, имел на шее Анну, и поговаривали даже, что был
представлен к звезде; впрочем, был большой добряк и даже сам выши-
вал иногда по тюлю. Потом отправился к вице-губернатору, потом был
у прокурора, у председателя палаты, у полицеймейстера, у откупщика,
у начальника над казенными фабриками... жаль, что несколько трудно
упомнить всех сильных мира сего; но довольно сказать, что приезжий
оказал необыкновенную деятельность насчет визитов: он явился
даже засвидетельствовать почтение инспектору врачебной управы и
городскому архитектору. И потом еще долго сидел в бричке, придумы-
вая, кому бы еще отдать визит, да уж больше в городе не нашлось
чиновников. В разговорах с сими властителями он очень искусно
умел польстить каждому. Губернатору намекнул как-то вскользь, что
в его губернию въезжаешь как в рай, дороги везде бархатные, и что
те правительства, которые назначают мудрых сановников, достойны
большой похвалы. Полицеймейстеру сказал что-то очень лестное
насчет городских будочников; а в разговорах с вице-губернатором и
председателем палаты, которые были еще только статские советники,
сказал даже ошибкою два раза ваше превосходительство, что очень
им понравилось. Следствием этого было то, что губернатор сделал ему
приглашение пожаловать к нему того же дня на домашнюю вечеринку,
прочие чиновники тоже, с своей стороны, кто на обед, кто на бостончик,
кто на чашку чаю.
О себе приезжий, как казалось, избегал много говорить; если же
говорил, то какими-то общими местами, с заметною скромностию, и
разговор его в таких случаях принимал несколько книжные обороты:
что он незначащий червь мира сего и не достоин того, чтобы много о
нем заботились, что испытал много на веку своем, претерпел на службе
за правду, имел много неприятелей, покушавшихся даже на жизнь
его, и что теперь, желая успокоиться, ищет избрать наконец место для
жительства, и что, прибывши в этот город, почел за непременный
долг засвидетельствовать свое почтение первым его сановникам. Вот
всё, что узнали в городе об этом новом лице, которое очень скоро не
преминуло показать себя на губернаторской вечеринке. Приготовление
к этой вечеринке заняло с лишком два часа времени, и здесь в приезжем
оказалась такая внимательность к туалету, какой даже не везде видыва-
но. После небольшого послеобеденного сна он приказал подать умыться
и чрезвычайно долго тер мылом обе щеки, подперши их извнутри
языком; потом, взявши с плеча трактирного слуги полотенце, вытер им
со всех сторон полное свое лицо, начав из-за ушей и фыркнув прежде

he had the habit of stowing away everything that turned up. The day was, I
believe, concluded by a plateful of cold veal, a bottle of “sour cabbage drink”,
and a sound sleep, with every tap turned on, as the expression is in some parts
of the spacious Russian state.
The whole of the following day was devoted to visits. The new-comer set
off to make calls upon all the dignitaries of the town. He paid his respects
to the governor who, as it turned out, was like Chichikov himself, neither
stout nor thin; he had the Anna on his neck, and was even said to have been
recommended for a star. He was, however, a very simple and good-natured fel-
low, and sometimes actually embroidered on net. Then he went to the deputy-
governor’s, then visited the public prosecutor, the president of the court of
justice, the police-master, the spirit tax contractor, the superintendent of the
government factories… I am sorry to say it is rather difficult to recall all the
great ones of this world; but it is sufficient to say that the new-comer displayed
an extraordinary activity in paying visits, he even called to show his regard
for the inspector of the medical board and the town architect. And he sat for
a good while afterwards in his chaise, wondering whether there was anyone
else he could visit, but it seemed there were no more officials in the town. In
conversation with these potentates he very skillfully managed to flatter every
one of them. To the governor he hinted, as it were casually, that one traveled
in his province as in Paradise, that the roads were everywhere like velvet, and
that governments which appointed wise rulers were worthy of the greatest
praise. To the police-master he said something very flattering about the town
police; while in conversation with the deputy-governor and the president of
the court, who were still only civil councilors, he twice said by mistake, “your
Excellency”, which greatly gratified them. The consequence of this was that
the governor gave him an invitation to an evening-party in his house that very
day, and the other officials, too, invited him, one to dinner, another to a game
of boston, another to a cup of tea.
The new-comer, as it seemed, avoided saying much about himself; if he did
speak of himself it was in generalities, with conspicuous modesty, and his
speech on such occasions took somewhat a bookish turn, such as: that he was
only an insignificant worm of this world and did not deserve to be the object
of attention, that he had passed through many experiences in his time, had
suffered at work for the cause of justice, had many enemies who had even
attempted his life, and that now, desirous of living in peace, he was looking
out to find a place for his permanent residence, and that being in the town
he thought it his bounden duty to show his respect for its leading dignitaries.
That was all that was learned in the town about this new personage who
very shortly afterwards did not fail to put in an appearance at the governor’s
evening-party. The preparation for this evening-party occupied him over two
hours, and on this occasion he exhibited a greater attention to his toilet than
is commonly seen. After a brief after-dinner nap he asked for soap and water
and spent an extremely long time scrubbing his cheeks with soap, putting his
tongue into them to make them stand out; then, taking a towel off the shoulder
of the waiter, wiped his chubby face in all directions, beginning from behind
his ears, first giving two snorts right in the face of the waiter. Then he put on

потому что блеск от свечей, ламп и дамских платьев был страшный.
Всё было залито светом. Черные фраки мелькали и носились врознь
и кучами там и там, как носятся мухи на белом сияющем рафинаде
в пору жаркого июльского лета, когда старая клюшница рубит и де-
лит его на сверкающие обломки перед открытым окном; дети все гля-
дят, собравшись вокруг, следя любопытно за движениями жестких
рук ее, подымающих молот, а воздушные эскадроны мух, поднятые
легким воздухом, влетают смело, как полные хозяева, и, пользуясь под-
слеповатостию старухи и солнцем, беспокоящим глаза ее, обсыпают
лакомые куски, где вразбитную, где густыми кучами. Насыщенные
богатым летом, и без того на всяком шагу расставляющим лакомые
блюда, они влетели вовсе не с тем, чтобы есть, но чтобы только показать
себя, пройтись взад и вперед по сахарной куче, потереть одна о другую
задние или передние ножки, или почесать ими у себя под крылышками,
или, протянувши обе передние лапки, потереть ими у себя над головою,
повернуться и опять улететь и опять прилететь с новыми докучными
эскадронами.
Не успел Чичиков осмотреться, как уже был схвачен под руку губерна-
тором, который представил его тут же губернаторше. Приезжий гость и
тут не уронил себя: он сказал какой-то комплимент, весьма приличный
для человека средних лет, имеющего чин не слишком большой и не
слишком малый. Когда установившиеся пары танцующих притиснули
всех к стене, он, заложивши руки назад, глядел на них минуты две
очень внимательно. Многие дамы были хорошо одеты и по моде, другие
оделись во что бог послал в губернский город. Мужчины здесь, как и
везде, были двух родов: одни тоненькие, которые всё увивались около
дам; некоторые из них были такого рода, что с трудом можно было
отличить их от петербургских: имели так же весьма чисто, обдуманно
и со вкусом зачесанные бакенбарды, или просто благовидные, весьма
гладко выбритые овалы лиц, так же небрежно подседали к дамам, так
же говорили по-французски и смешили дам так же, как и в Петербурге.
Другой род мужчин составляли толстые или такие же, как Чичиков,
то есть не так чтобы слишком толстые, однако ж и не тонкие. Эти,
напротив того, косились и пятились от дам и посматривали только
по сторонам, не расставлял ли где губернаторский слуга зеленого
стола для виста. Лица у них были полные и круглые, на иных даже
были бородавки, кое-кто был и рябоват; волос они на голове не но-
сили ни хохлами, ни буклями, ни на манер черт меня побери, как
говорят французы; волосы у них были или низко подстрижены, или

from his nose, and immediately after that attired himself in a shot cranberry-
colored dress coat. Having thus arrayed himself he drove in his own carriage
through the immensely wide streets, illuminated by the faint light that came
from the windows glimmering here and there. The governor’s house, however,
was illuminated as though for a ball; there were carriages with lamps, two
policemen before the entrance, shouting postilions in the distance — in fact
everything as it should be.
On entering the room Chichikov had for a moment to screw up his eyes,
for the glare of the candles, the lamps, and the ladies’ dresses was terrible. It
was all flooded with light. Black coats flitted about, one by one or in groups,
here and there, like flies flitting about a sparkling sugar-loaf on a hot July day
when the old housekeeper breaks and splits it up into glistening lumps before
the open window; the children all look on, gathered round her, watching with
interest her rough hands lifting the hammer while airy squadrons of flies,
floating on the breeze, fly in boldly as though the house belonged to them and,
taking advantage of the old woman’s dim sight and the sunshine that dazzles
her eyes, cover the dainty morsels, here in scattered groups, and there in
dense crowds. Sated by the wealth of summer which spreads dainties for them
at every step, they fly in, not for food but to display themselves, to parade up
and down over the heap of sugar, to rub their hind legs or their front legs one
against the other, or to scratch themselves under their wings, or stretching out
both front legs to rub them over their heads, to turn and fly out again and to
fly in once more in new persistent squadrons.
Chichikov had hardly time to look about him when the governor took him
by the arm and at once presented him to his wife. The new-comer did not
lose his head, but paid her some complement extremely suitable for a middle-
aged man, who is of a rank in the service neither exalted nor very humble.
When the couples of dancers taking their places pressed everyone back to the
wall, he gazed at them very attentively for about two minutes with his hands
behind him. Many of the ladies were well and fashionably dressed. Others
were dressed in whatever Providence was pleased to send them in a provincial
town. The men here as everywhere were of two kinds; first, the thin who were
always hanging about the ladies; some of them could hardly be distinguished
from Petersburgers: they had the same elaborately and tastefully combed
whiskers or the same pleasing, smoothly shaven, oval faces, they seated them-
selves beside the ladies in the same casual way, spoke French and diverted
the ladies just like gentlemen in Petersburg. The second class consisted of the
stout or those like Chichikov who, though not extremely stout, were certainly
not thin. These, on the contrary, looked askance at the ladies and held aloof
from them, and gazed about to see whether the governor’s servant had yet set
the green table for whist. Their faces were round and full, some of them even
had warts, some of them even were pock-marked; they did not wear their hair
either in a top-knot or in curls, nor à la diable m’emporte as the French call
it; their hair was either cropped short or plastered to their heads, and their

в другом конце другой дом, потом близ города деревенька, потом и село
со всеми угодьями. Наконец толстый, послуживши богу и государю,
заслуживши всеобщее уважение, оставляет службу, перебирается и де-
лается помещиком, славным русским барином, хлебосолом, и живет, и
хорошо живет. А после него опять тоненькие наследники спускают, по
русскому обычаю, на курьерских всё отцовское добро. Нельзя утаить,
что почти такого рода размышления занимали Чичикова в то время,
когда он рассматривал общество, и следствием этого было то, что он
наконец присоединился к толстым, где встретил почти всё знакомые
лица: прокурора с весьма черными густыми бровями и несколько
подмигивавшим левым глазом, так, как будто бы говорил: “пойдем,
брат, в другую комнату, там я тебе что-то скажу”, — человека, впрочем,
серьезного и молчаливого; почтмейстера, низенького человека, но
остряка и философа; председателя палаты, весьма рассудительного и
любезного человека, — которые все приветствовали его как старинного
знакомого, на что Чичиков раскланивался, несколько набок, впрочем,
не без приятности. Тут же познакомился он с весьма обходительным
и учтивым помещиком Маниловым и несколько неуклюжим на взгляд
Собакевичем, который с первого раза ему наступил на ногу, сказавши:
“прошу прощения”. Тут же ему всунули карту на вист, которую он при-
нял с таким же вежливым поклоном. Они сели за зеленый стол и не
вставали уже до ужина. Все разговоры совершенно прекратились, как
случается всегда, когда наконец предаются занятию дельному. Хотя
почтмейстер был очень речист, но и тот, взявши в руки карты, тот же
час выразил на лице своем мыслящую физиономию, покрыл нижнею
губою верхнюю и сохранил такое положение во всё время игры. Выходя
с фигуры, он ударял по столу крепко рукою, приговаривая, если была
дама: “Пошла, старая попадья!”, если же король: “Пошел, тамбовский
мужик!” А председатель приговаривал: “А я его по усам! А я ее по усам!”
Иногда при ударе карт по столу вырывались выражения: “А! была не
была, не с чего, так с бубен!”, или же просто восклицания: “черви!
червоточина! пикенция!”, или “пикендрас! пичурущух! пичура!” и
даже просто: “пичук!” — названия, которыми перекрестили они масти
в своем обществе. По окончании игры спорили, как водится, довольно
громко. Приезжий наш гость также спорил, но как-то чрезвычайно

officials of the town. Alas! the stout know better how to manage their affairs
in this world than the thin. The thin serve rather on special commissions or
are mere supernumeraries, sent here and there; their existence is somehow
too light and airy and not to be depended upon. The stout never take in-
significant posts but always take substantial ones, and if they seat themselves
anywhere they sit firmly and reliably, so that their seat is more likely to give
way under them than they are to be dislodged from it. They are not fond of
external display. Their coats are not so smartly cut as the thin man’s; their
boxes are graced by God however. The thin man will in three years’ time not
have a single serf left unmortgaged; the fat man lives quietly but, hey presto,
he gets a house at the end of the town bought in the name of his wife; later on,
at the other end of the town, another one, then a little village near the town,
then an estate with all the conveniences. In the end the fat man, after serving
God and his Tsar and winning universal respect, leaves the service, moves
away and becomes a landowner, a hearty hospitable Russian gentleman, he
gets on, and indeed gets on very well. And when he has gone, his thin heirs
in accordance with the Russian tradition make ducks and drakes of all their
father’s property. I cannot disguise the fact that such were the reflections
which occupied Chichikov’s mind while he was scrutinizing the company,
and the result of them was that he finally joined the fat ones, among whom
he found all the personages he knew: the public prosecutor with very black
thick eyebrows and with the left eye given to winking slightly as though to say:
“Come into the next room, my brother, I have something to tell you”, though he
was a serious and taciturn man; the postmaster, a short man who was a wit
and a philosopher; the president of the court, a very sagacious and polite
man, all of whom welcomed him as an old acquaintance, while Chichikov
responded to their civilities by profuse bows a little to one side but no less
agreeable for that. Then he made the acquaintance of a very civil and affable
landowner called Manilov, and another, somewhat clumsy-looking, called
Sobakevich who to begin with trod on his foot, saying, “I beg your pardon”.
Then they thrust upon him a card for whist, which he accepted with the same
polite bow. They sat down to a green table and did not get up before supper.
All conversation ceased entirely, as is always the case when people give them-
selves up to an important occupation. Though the postmaster was a very
talkative person, yet as soon as he took up his cards his face at once became
expressive of thought, while his lower lip was drawn up over the upper one
and remained so all the time he was playing. When he played a court card,
he would strike the table violently with his hand, saying if it were a queen,
“Away with you, old priest’s wife!”, if it were a king, “Away with you, Tambov
peasant!” while the president would say, “I’ll pull his whiskers! I’ll pull her
whiskers!” Sometimes as cards were slapped down on the table, comments
burst out, “Ah, come what may! there’s nothing else, so play a diamond!” or
the suits were called by various endearing nicknames with which they had
rechristened them. At the end of the game they disputed rather loudly, as
usual. Our new-comer also disputed, but so extremely skillfully, that everyone

осведомился, как имя и отчество. В немного времени он совершенно
успел очаровать их. Помещик Манилов, еще вовсе человек не пожилой,
имевший глаза сладкие, как сахар, и щуривший их всякий раз, когда
смеялся, был от него без памяти. Он очень долго жал ему руку и просил
убедительно сделать ему честь своим приездом в деревню, к которой,
по его словам, было только пятнадцать верст от городской заставы. На
что Чичиков с весьма вежливым наклонением головы и искренним
пожатием руки отвечал, что он не только с большою охотою готов это
исполнить, но даже почтет за священнейший долг. Собакевич тоже
сказал несколько лаконически: “и ко мне прошу”, шаркнувши ногою,
обутою в сапог такого исполинского размера, которому вряд ли где
можно найти отвечающую ногу, особливо в нынешнее время, когда и на
Руси начинают уже выводиться богатыри.
На другой день Чичиков отправился на обед и вечер к полицеймей-
стеру, где с трех часов после обеда засели в вист и играли до двух часов
ночи. Там, между прочим, он познакомился с помещиком Ноздревым,
человеком лет тридцати, разбитным малым, который ему после трех-
четырех слов начал говорить ты. С полицеймейстером и прокурором
Ноздрев тоже был на ты и обращался по-дружески; но когда сели играть
в большую игру, полицеймейстер и прокурор чрезвычайно внимательно
рассматривали его взятки и следили почти за всякою картою, с которой
он ходил. На другой день Чичиков провел вечер у председателя палаты,
который принимал гостей своих в халате, несколько замасленном, и в
том числе двух каких-то дам. Потом был на вечере у вице-губернатора,
на большом обеде у откупщика, на небольшом обеде у прокурора, ко-
торый, впрочем, стоил большого, на закуске после обедни, данной
городским главою, которая тоже стоила обеда. Словом, ни одного часу
не приходилось ему оставаться дома, и в гостиницу приезжал он с
тем только, чтобы заснуть. Приезжий во всем как-то умел найтиться
и показал в себе опытного светского человека. О чем бы разговор ни
был, он всегда умел поддержать его: шла ли речь о лошадином заводе,
он говорил и о лошадином заводе; говорили ли о хороших собаках, и
здесь он сообщал очень дельные замечания; трактовали ли касательно
следствия, произведенного казенною палатою, — он показал, что ему
небезызвестны и судейские проделки; было ли рассуждение о бильярд-

could see that though he was arguing, he was arguing agreeably. He never
said, “You led”, but “You were pleased to lead; I had the honor to cover your
two”, and so on. To propitiate his opponents still further he invariably offered
them his silver enameled snuff-box, at the bottom of which they noticed two
violets put there for the sake of the scent. The new-comer’s attention was
particularly engaged by Manilov and Sobakevich, the landowners above
mentioned. He immediately drew the president and the postmaster a little
aside and made inquiries concerning them. Several of the questions put by
him showed not only a love of knowledge but also solid sense in the visitor,
for he first of all inquired how many souls of serfs each of them possessed
and in what condition their estates were, and only afterwards inquired
their Christian names and father’s names. Before long he had succeeded in
completely fascinating them. Manilov, a man who had hardly reached middle-
age, with eyes as sweet as sugar which he screwed up every time he laughed,
was enchanted with him. He pressed his hand very warmly and begged him
earnestly to do him the honor of a visit to his country place, which in his
words was only ten miles from the town gate; to which Chichikov, with a very
polite inclination of the head and cordial pressure of the hand, replied that
he was not only extremely eager to do so, but would positively regard it as a
most sacred duty. Sobakevich too said somewhat laconically, “And I invite you
too”, with a scrape of his foot, shod in a boot of such gigantic proportions that
it would be hard to find a foot to fit it, particularly nowadays when even in
Russia epical heroes are beginning to die out.
Next day Chichikov went to dinner and to spend the evening at the police-
master’s, where after dinner they sat down to whist at three o’clock and played
till two o’clock in the morning. There he made the acquaintance, among
others, of a landowner called Nozdryov, a man of about thirty, a jolly good
fellow who from the first three or four words began to address him familiarly.
With the police-master and public prosecutor Nozdryov was on equally friend-
ly and familiar terms; but when they sat down to play for high stakes, both the
police-master and the public prosecutor kept an extremely careful watch on
the tricks he took and noted almost every card he played. Next day Chichikov
spent the evening with the president of the court, who received his visitors,
including some two ladies, in his somewhat greasy dressing-gown. Then he
spent an evening at the deputy-governor’s, went to a big dinner at the spirit
tax contractor’s, and to a little dinner at the public prosecutor’s which was
however as good as a big one; he went also to a lunch after mass, given by
the mayor of the town, which was as good as a dinner too. In short, he had
not to spend a single hour at home and returned to the inn only to sleep. The
new-comer was quite at his ease on every occasion and showed himself an
experienced man of the world. Whatever the subject of conversation he could
always keep it up: were horse-breeding discussed, he talked about horse-
breeding; if they conversed about good dogs, on that subject too he made very
apt observations; if they touched on a case inquired into by the court of justice,
he showed that he was not ignorant of court tricks; if the topic were a game of

тор об нем изъяснился, что он благонамеренный человек; прокурор,
что он дельный человек; жандармский полковник говорил, что он
ученый человек; председатель палаты, что он знающий и почтенный
человек; полицеймейстер, что он почтенный и любезный человек; жена
полицеймейстера, что он любезнейший и обходительнейший человек.
Даже сам Собакевич, который редко отзывался о ком-нибудь с хорошей
стороны, приехавши довольно поздно из города и уже совершенно
раздевшись и легши на кровать возле худощавой жены своей, сказал
ей: “Я, душенька, был у губернатора на вечере, и у полицеймейстера
обедал, и познакомился с коллежским советником Павлом Ивановичем
Чичиковым: преприятный человек!” На что супруга отвечала: “Гм!” и
толкнула его ногою.
Такое мнение, весьма лестное для гостя, составилось о нем в городе, и
оно держалось до тех пор, покамест одно странное свойство гостя и пред-
приятие, или, как говорят в провинциях, пассаж, о котором читатель
скоро узнает, не привело в совершенное недоумение почти весь город.
Глава II
Уже более недели приезжий господин жил в городе, разъезжая по
вечеринкам и обедам и таким образом проводя, как говорится, очень
приятно время. Наконец он решился перенести свои визиты за город
и навестить помещиков Манилова и Собакевича, которым дал слово.
Может быть, к сему побудила его другая, более существенная причина,
дело более серьезное, близшее к сердцу... Но обо всем этом читатель
узнает постепенно и в свое время, если только будет иметь терпение
прочесть предлагаемую повесть, очень длинную, имеющую после раз-
двинуться шире и просторнее по мере приближения к концу, венчающе-
му дело. Кучеру Селифану отдано было приказание рано поутру зало-
жить лошадей в известную бричку; Петрушке приказано было оста-
ваться дома, смотреть за комнатой и чемоданом. Для читателя будет
не лишним познакомиться с сими двумя крепостными людьми нашего
героя. Хотя, конечно, они лица не так заметные, и то, что называют,
второстепенные или даже третьестепенные, хотя главные ходы и пру-
жины поэмы не на них утверждены и разве кое-где касаются и легко
зацепляют их, — но автор любит чрезвычайно быть обстоятельным во
всем, и с этой стороны, несмотря на то, что сам человек русский, хочет
быть аккуратен, как немец. Это займет, впрочем, не много времени и

billiards, he was not at sea in billiards either; if the conversation turned upon
virtue, he made excellent reflections upon virtue and even with tears in his
eyes; upon the preparation of hot punch, he was an authority on punch too;
upon overseers of customs and excise officers, he discoursed about them too
as though he had been himself both an excise officer and an overseer of the
customs. But it was noteworthy that he succeeded in accompanying all this
with a certain sedateness, and knew very well how to behave. He spoke neither
too loud nor too low, but exactly as he ought. Take him how you would, he was
a thoroughly gentlemanly man. All the officials were pleased at the arrival
of the new-comer. The governor pronounced that he was a right-thinking
man; the public prosecutor said that he was a practical man; the colonel of
the gendarmes said that he was a well-educated man; the president of the
court said that he was a well-informed and estimable man; the police-master
that he was an estimable and agreeable man; the police-master’s wife that
he was a most agreeable and most amiable man. Though Sobakevich rarely
said anything good of anyone, yet even he, after returning rather late from
town, undressing and getting into bed beside his scraggy wife, said to her: “I
spent the evening at the governor’s, my love, and dined at the police-master’s
and made the acquaintance of a collegiate councilor called Pavel Ivanovich
Chichikov, a very agreeable man!” To which his spouse responded with: “H’m”,
and kicked him.
Such was the very flattering opinion that was formed of the visitor in the
town, and it was maintained until a strange peculiarity and enterprise of his,
or, as they say in the provinces, a “passage”, of which the reader will soon
learn more, reduced almost the whole town to utter perplexity.
Chapter II
Our new-comer had stayed for over a week in the town, driving about to
evening-parties and dinners and so passing his time, as it is called, very

and to go and see landowners Manilov and Sobakevich as he had promised.
Perhaps he was impelled to this by another more essential reason, by
something more serious and nearer to his heart… But of all this the reader
will learn by degrees in due time, if only he has the patience to read through
the following narrative, a very long one, since it has later on to cover a wider
and wider ground as it approaches its conclusion. Selifan the coachman was
given orders to put the horses into the familiar chaise early in the morning;
Petrushka was instructed to remain at home to look after the room and the
portmanteau. It will not be amiss for the reader to be made acquainted with
these two serfs of our hero’s. Although of course they are not very prominent
characters but are rather what are called secondary or even tertiary, though
the principal events and, the mainsprings of the poem do not rest upon them,
and only here and there touch and lightly catch upon them, yet the author
likes to be extremely circumstantial in everything, and in that respect, though
a Russian, prefers to be as precise as a German. This however will not take
