“Should I have taken the law of a donkey, supposing that he had kicked me?”
" ηὸλ δὲ θάλαη, "ἃ κὲλ ζπλῆθα, γελλαῖα: νἶκαη δὲ θαὶ ἃ κὴ ζπλῆθα
“The part I understand is excellent, and so too is, I dare say, the part I do not
understand»
«θαὶ ἔιεγελ ἥδηζηα ἐζζίσλ ἥθηζηα ὄςνπ πξνζδεῖζζαη: θαὶ ἥδηζηα πίλσλ ἥθηζηα ηὸ
κὴ παξὸλ πνηὸλ ἀλακέλεηλ»
He used to say that he most enjoyed the food which was least in need of
condiment, and the drink which made him feel the least hankering for some other
drink;
Ἔιεγε δὲ ὡο ζαπκαζηὸλ πξόβαηα κὲλ ἕθαζηνλ εἰπεῖλ ἂλ ῥᾳδίσο ὅζα ἔρεη, θίινπο
δ᾽ νὐθ ἂλ ὀλνκάζαη ὁπόζνπο θέθηεηαη: νὕησο ὀιηγώξσο ἔρεηλ πεξὶ αὐηνύο.
He used to say it was strange that, if you asked a man how many sheep he had, he
could easily tell you the precise number; whereas he could not name his friends or
say how many he had, so slight was the value he set upon them.
7. Он говорил, что есть одно только благо – знание и одно только зло –
невежество.
«ἔιεγε δὲ θαὶ ἓλ κόλνλ ἀγαζὸλ εἶλαη, ηὴλ ἐπηζηήκελ, θαὶ ἓλ κόλνλ θαθόλ, ηὴλ
ἀκαζίαλ».
«There is, he said, only one good, that is, knowledge, and only one evil, that is,
ignorance».
Wealth and good birth bring their possessor no dignity, but on the contrary evil.
Ἀιιὰ θαὶ ιπξίδεηλ ἐκάλζαλελ ἤδε γεξαηόο, κεδὲλ ιέγσλ ἄηνπνλ εἶλαη ἅ ηηο κὴ
νἶδελ ἐθκαλζάλεηλ.
Moreover, in his old age he learnt to play the lyre, declaring that he saw no
absurdity in learning a new accomplishment.

To make a good start was no trifling advantage, but a trifle turned the scale.
ηνύο ηε ηὰ πξώτκα πνιινῦ ἐσλεκέλνπο ἀπνγηλώζθεηλ ἔιεγελ εἰο ηὰο ὥξαο ἐιζεῖλ.
He said that, when people paid a high price for fruit which had ripened early, they
must despair of seeing the fruit ripen at the proper season.
Some one asked him whether he should marry or not, and received the reply,
“Whichever you do you will repent it.”

15. Удивительно, говорил он, что ваятели каменных статуй бьются над тем,
чтобы камню придать подобие человека, и не думают о том, чтобы самим не
быть подобием камня.
ἐιεγέ ηε ζαπκάδεηλ ηλ ηὰο ιηζίλαο εἰθόλαο θαηαζθεπαδνκέλσλ ηνῦ κὲλ ιίζνπ
πξνλνεῖλ ὅπσο ὁκνηόηαηνο ἔζηαη, αὑηλ δ᾽ ἀκειεῖλ, ὡο κὴ ὁκνίνπο ηῶ ιίζῳ
θαίλεζζαη.
He used to express his astonishment that the sculptors of marble statues should
take pains to make the block of marble into a perfect likeness of a man, and should
take no pains about themselves lest they should turn out mere blocks, not men.
16. Он говаривал, что сам он ест, чтобы жить, а другие люди живут, чтобы
есть.
ἔιεγέ ηε ηνὺο κὲλ ἄιινπο ἀλζξώπνπο δῆλ ἵλ᾽ ἐζζίνηελ: αὐηὸο δὲ ἐζζίεηλ ἵλα δῴε.
He would say that the rest of the world lived to eat, while he himself ate to live.
17. Когда Антисфен повернулся так, чтобы выставить напоказ дыры в плаще,

When Antisthenes turned his cloak so that the tear in it came into view, “I see,”
said he, “your vanity through your cloak.”
When Alcibiades declared that the scolding of Xanthippe was intolerable, “Nay, I
have got used to it,” said he, “as to the continued rattle of a windlass.

19. Он говорил, что сварливая жена для него – то же, что норовистые кони
для наездников: "Как они, одолев норовистых, легко справляются с
остальными, так и я на Ксантиппе учусь обхождению с другими людьми"
He said he lived with a shrew, as horsemen are fond of spirited horses, “but just as,
when they have mastered these, they can easily cope with the rest, so I in the
society of Xanthippe shall learn to adapt myself to the rest of the world.”
