Specifications
YARN
Kelbourne Woolens Germantown (100% N. American
Wool; 220 yds/100 gm skein): peacock 440, 1 skein.
GAUGE
1 pattern repeat (28 sts) = 4.5” (11.5 cm), and
26 rnds = 4” (10 cm) in Body Chart on larger ndls, after
blocking.
NEEDLES
1 – 16” (40 cm) US 5 (3.75 mm) circular.
1 – 16” (40 cm) US 7 (4.5 mm) circular.
1 – set US 7 (4.5 mm) DPNs.
Check your gauge and adjust needle size(s) accordingly if necessary.
NOTIONS
Stitch marker, tapestry needle, Kelbourne Woolens label,
sewing thread, sharp sewing needle.
SIZE
18” (46 cm) circumference, unstretched, 9.5” (24 cm)
height.

Cables from charts, provisional cast on.
Worthy of Note
The May Hat is worked in the round from the bottom
up. The deep ribbed folded brim, intricate cables, and
pom pom make the most of a full skein of Germantown,
ensuring a warm and cosy hat come winter.
When working from the Body Chart on Round 16, you will
need to remove and replace the end of round marker in
order to work the final C2/1/2R.
Work Round 16 as follows: Knit the first two stitches
of the round (not charted), work the chart 4 times around
until 3 stitches remain, remove the marker, work the last
C2/1/2R cable, replace the marker – it should be located
after the purl in the center of the cable.
The repeat is worked four times around. If you choose
to place markers identifying the pattern repeats, you will
alsoneed to remove and replace each marker in order to
work the cables that the marker divides.

C2/2RDec: Slip 2 sts to cn, hold back, k2tog; k2tog from

Directions
CAST ON:
Using smaller ndl, crochet hook, and waste yarn,
provisionally cast on 96 sts (See Useful Tips). Join for
working in the rnd, being careful not to twist sts.
BRIM:
Work in K2, P1 Ribbing for 5” (13 cm).
FINISHING:
Break yarn. Thread through live stitches 2–3 times and
fasten off. Weave in remaining ends. Soak in cool water and
wool wash, and block to measurements.
Pom Pom:
Make a 2” diameter pompom with remaining yarn. Secure
pom pom to hat and tie off inside.

Transfer provisionally CO sts to spare ndl. Label:

Using sewing thread and a sharp sewing needle, sew
Fold work in half with WS together, and join folded hem as Kelbourne Woolens label to brim as shown.

around, replace m (new eor placement) – 80 sts.
