This can be translated as "put the screws on." Let's break down this phrase to see the
meaning of its parts. The verb закрутить (zakrutit') means "to screw," and the plural noun
гайки (gayki) means "screw-nuts." So, the phrase literally means "to screw screw-nuts." The
meaning of this phrase is "to make certain rules, orders, or requirements more severe or
tough." This phrase is widely used in Russian newspapers, especially concerning topics

GRAMMAR
The Focus of This Lesson Is the Genitive Case of Singular Adjectives and Possessive
Pronouns in Russian
За изве ст ного д е пут ат а Максимова.
Za izvestnogo deputata Maksimova.
"For the well-known deputy Maximov."
In this lesson, you'll start to learn about the genitive case of singular adjectives in Russian.
The questions of the genitive case of singular adjectives are Какого? (Kakogo?) for the
masculine and neuter genders and Какой? (Kakoy?) for the feminine gender. These can be
translated into English as "which?" or "what?"
First, let's have a closer look at masculine and neuter adjective endings.
- Adjectives with a stem ending in a hard consonant have the ending [ого]. For example:
If the ending of an adjective is stressed, the ending changes to [ого]. For example, bol'shoy
(большой), meaning "big," changes to bol'shogo (большого), and chuzhoy (чужой),
meaning "foreign," changes to chuzhogo (чужого).
- Adjectives with a stem ending in a hard consonant change their endings to [ой].
For example:
- Adjectives with a stem ending in a soft consonant (ж, ч, ш, or щ) with an unstressed ending
have the ending [ей]. For example:
If the ending of an adjective is stressed, the ending changes to [ой]. For example, большая
(bol'shaya), meaning "big," changes to большой (bol'shoy), and ч ужая (chuzhaya),
meaning "foreign," changes to ч ужой (chuzhoy).
For example:
1. Откуда вы приехали?
- Из солнечной Японии.
Otkuda vy priyekhali?
- Iz solnechnoy Yaponii.
"Where are you from?"
- "From sunny Japan."
4. Мама, ты где?
- Мы только что вышли из детской поликлиники.
Mama, ty gde?
- My tol'ko chto vyshli iz detskoy polikliniki.
"Mom, where are you?"
- "We just left from the children's polyclinic."
Now, let's take a look at the following table, which describes the possessive pronouns in the
genitive case.
т ого т ой "that"
эт ого эт ой "this"

Pronunciation Tip
In this lesson, we'll study one more voicing rule. In previous lessons, you learned that all
consonants in Russia form pairs of voiced and voiceless.
1) If a voiceless consonant is followed by voiced one, it should be pronounced like its voiced
counterpart.

CULTURAL INSIGHT
Russian people like to talk and joke about politics, corruption, and politicians very much. You
can find a lot of sites with anecdotes on these topics, and the famous Russian comedians
often joke about the scale of corruption in Russia, which has really become a national
problem. According to the Corruption Perceptions Index published by Transparency
International, the rank of Russia is 133 out of a possible 176. But the government does its
best to fight it. New methods of attacking corruption are developed, and criminal cases
against corrupt officials are opened, but still there is much left to do.
