Но не напрасно Прометея But the heavenly gift of Prometheus

Небесный дар Элладе дан. Wasn't given to Hellas in vain.
Толпы рабов бегут, бледнея, Paling, the crowds of slaves retreated
Пред горстью доблестных граждан. Before a handful of valiant men.

И кто ж до Инда и до Ганга And who has traveled the glorious path
Стезёю славною прошёл? To the Indus and the Ganges?
То македонская фаланга, The Macedonian phalanx,
То Рима царственный орёл. The sovereign eagle of Rome.

И силой разума и права - And by the strength of reason and law -

Всечеловеческих начал - Truths undenied by any man -
Воздвиглась Запада держава, An empire of the West arose,
И миру Рим единство дал. And Rome unified the world.

Чего ж ещё недоставало? What more was needed?

Зачем весь мир опять в крови? Why was the whole world again in blood?
Душа вселенной тосковала The soul of the universe craved
О духе веры и любви! The spirit of faith and love!

И слово вещее - не ложно, And the prophetic word was not false,
И свет с Востока засиял, And a light from the East shone,
И то, что было невозможно, Heralding and promising
Он возвестил и обещал. What had been impossible.

И, разливаяся широко, And, spilling wide,

Исполнен знамений и сил, Full of portent and strength,
Тот свет, исшедший от Востока, That light from the East
С Востоком Запад примирил. Made peace between East and West.

О Русь! В предвиденье высоком O Rus'! In lofty premonition

Ты мыслью гордой занята; You ponder a proud idea;
Каким же хочешь быть Востоком: Which East do you want to be:
Востоком Ксеркса иль Христа? The East of Xerxes or of Christ?
