SEMANTIC INTERPRETATION OF MODAL EXPRESSIONS

IN OLD CHURCH SLAVONIC TEXTS
va Palasova
(Summary)
The Old Church Slavonic has a specific position among the other Slavonic
languages. It is the earliest Slavonic language recorded in written form. Recently it turns
out that it plays very important part in testifying the continuous development of the
Slavonic languages in the general framework of inquiry into the processes of
grammaticalization. The Old Church Slavonic texts in particular make it possible to
observe these processes in statu nascendi. Formation of Slavonic modal expressions of
possibility, necessity and will can serve as very typical examples. Semantic analysis
reveals one general characteristic feature of modal expressions, viz. their oscillation
between a typical grammatical category on the one hand and different lexical units on
the other.
