Alcohol and alcoholism in Russia: what has changed during last 50 years
S.V. Jargin, Y.E. Razvodovsky
An overview of anti-alcohol measures in Russia over the last 50 years and of their
consequences is provided. Last time, there is an improvement tendency with a decline of heavy
binge drinking of vodka and an increase in moderate consumption of beer. At the same time, there
is a tendency to exaggerate the alcohol-related problems, which tends to befog shortages of the
healthcare, misplacing responsibility for the relatively high mortality on the patients, that is, self inflicted diseases due to the excessive alcohol consumption. The purpose of this review was to draw
attention to alcohol-related problems of public health. Apart from alcohol, the following causes of
the enhanced mortality are pointed out: limited availability of modern health care, especially for
aged men, including those prone to the alcohol consumption, toxicity of some alcoholic beverages
causing severe intoxications. Besides, there was a problem of property-related crime against
alcoholics and people with alcohol-related dementia aimed at appropriation of their residences. At

the same time, quality improvement of alcoholic beverages since approximately the last decade has
been noticed.
