4  Functions and features

This document gives an introduction to the usage of the tool "VS Monitoring" for identification systems
and object recognition sensors.
VS Monitoring is used to
●● monitor multiple sensors of different types (O2I, O2D or O2V)
●● store results automatically

This document gives an overview of how to configure the application.

It provides a guide through the graphical user interface and explains how to add configurations for
different sensors, how to display the current results ("Monitor Mode") and how to store those results
automatically. It also explains the purpose of additional global options of the application.

5  Installation
The application is delivered "ready to use" or as zip archive. Just copy the files or extract the archive to a
directory on the hard disk and execute the file "VS_Monitoring.exe".
Windows 7 is used for the representation of the figures and texts in this guide.

4
VS Monitoring User Guide

6  Introduction
The application "VS Monitoring" (VSM) is used to monitor multiple sensors at the same time and to store
sensor data to a local disk automatically. VSM provides the option to open multiple monitor windows at
the same time. These windows show the current decoding result of a single sensor. The information that
is displayed here contains the current sensor image, result details as plain text and information that is
drawn as overlay data on the image. With VSM it is possible to store monitoring results automatically to
a local disk. It is also possible to get a service report from the sensor manually or automatically with a
specific frequency. Stored results can be displayed in a result window that can be opened for each sensor
or for a specific folder. A result window displays all saved results in one directory.

Main parts of the graphical user interface of VSM:

VS Monitoring User Guide

8.5.1  Monitoring tab

In the Monitoring tab it can be defined how often a new result should be retrieved from the sensor. This
result can be displayed in a monitor window and it can be saved to disk.

UK

Polling Enables/disables the acquisition of monitor results. If this option is disabled no

monitor results will be displayed or saved.
Cycle time The frequency for getting a new monitor result from the sensor. The cycle time
is adjustable in the range from 10 milliseconds to 10 days.
Note: Cycle times are disabled for O2V sensors due to the asynchronous
communication!
Get images Defines if images should be retrieved from the sensor. If this option is disabled,
no images will be displayed or saved. The kind of results, passed / failed
images, is definable.
Get details Defines if detailed information should be retrieved from the sensor. If this option
is disabled, no detailed information will be displayed or saved. It is definable
what kind of result (passed, failed) details should be retrieved from the sensor
(→ 12.2.2 Details)
Get only every Defines if only every n-th new result should be retrieved from the sensor. For
n-th result example: If this setting has a value of 10, then only every 10th result will be
retrieved /displayed/saved.
Save results Defines if the monitor results should be saved.
Image type Defines the type of the image to save. Normal images are the pure sensor
image. Overlay images contain the overlay graphics as shown in the monitor
window. If the option "normal + overlay" is used, both images will be saved.
Note that the file size of overlay images is three times the size of normal
images.
Path for saved results Defines the directory where monitor results should be saved. For each sensor
a new folder will be created. The name of this folder is the IP address of the
sensor. The results will be saved to this "IP folder".
Example: If the path is set to "C:\\temp" and the IP address is "192.168.0.79",
the results will be saved to "C:\\temp\\192.168.0.79".

15
VS Monitoring User Guide

8.5.2  Service Reports tab

The Service Reports tab provides the settings for the collection of service reports. Most of the settings
are identical with the monitoring settings. By default the automatic collection of service reports is disabled
because you can get them manually for each sensor in the main window. But it is also possible to
automate this for O2I sensors.

Important note:
The automatic collection of service reports is not recommended for O2D and O2V sensors
because this will lead to a change of the sensor state.

Polling Enables/disables the acquisition of service reports. If this option is enabled,

service reports will be collected automatically and saved to the specified folder.
Note that this option is only recommended for O2I sensors.
Cycle time The frequency for getting a new service report from the sensor. The cycle time
is adjustable in the range from 10 milliseconds to 10 days.
Get images Defines if images should be collected from the sensor. If this option is disabled,
no images will be saved. You can define for what kind of result (passed, failed)
images should be collected from the sensor.
Get details Defines if detailed information should be retrieved from the sensor. If this option
is disabled, no detailed information will be displayed or saved. It is definable
what kind of result (passed, failed) details should be retrieved from the sensor
(→ 12.2.2 Details).
Image type Defines the type of the image to save. Normal images are the pure sensor
image. Overlay images contain the overlay graphics as shown in the monitor
window. If the option "normal + overlay" is used, both images will be saved.
Note that the file size of overlay images is three times the size of normal
images.
Path for saved Defines the directory where service report results should be saved. A new
reports folder will be created for each sensor. The name of this folder is the IP address
of the sensor. The results will be saved to this "IP folder".
Example: If you set the path to "C:\\temp" and the IP address is "192.168.0.79",
the results will be saved to "C:\\temp\\192.168.0.79".

8.5.3  Statistics tab

In the Statistics tab is defined how often to get the decoding statistics from the sensor. The statistic values
(number of good and bad readings) are displayed in the main window for each sensor.

Polling Enables/disables the acquisition of statistics. If this option is disabled, no UK

statistics will be displayed in the main window list.
Cycle time The frequency for getting a new statistics from the sensor. The cycle time is
adjustable in the range from 10 milliseconds to 10 days.
8.6  Monitor window

10  Using the MDI window

The MDI window can be used as container for all monitor windows (→ 8.6 Monitor window). It makes it
easy to move all monitor windows at once or to close all of them with one click. It can be enabled in the
options window (→ 8.8 Options window).

Screenshot 18:
1: MDI window
2: Scrollbar up/down
3: Scrollbar left/right

Windows within the MDI window can be moved out of its visible area. The visible area of the MDI window
can be scrolled. The background of the MDI window can be made transparent so that the user can click
through it and access windows or the desktop behind it

Note that if the auto arrangement feature (→ 8.2 Toolbar) is active, all monitor windows will be
arranged in a 3x3 table that fills the MDI window even if the MDI window is resized. This behaviour
is deactivated when a monitor window or a result window is moved or resized or if the auto arrange
feature is disabled manually.

11  Start parameters

It is possible to start VS Monitoring with different start parameters. This can be done via a command line
window or with a shortcut. How to do it is described in chapter 9 (→ 9 Loading/saving the VS Monitoring
configuration). The following start parameters are supported:

CONFIG_FILE The path to a configuration file that should be opened by VSM.

Example:
"D:\VSMonitoring\VS_Monitoring.exe" "D:\VSMonitoring\user_guide.vsmc"
Logging Enables the logging feature. Errors and warnings are logged to a daily log file.
They can be viewed within the application in a separate window. To open this
window a new button appears in the toolbar ( ). UK
Example:
"D:\VSMonitoring\VS_Monitoring.exe" logging

12  Remarks
12.1  Maximum number of connected sensors
The number of sensor configurations is not limited by the application. However the number of connected
sensors is limited by hardware configuration (PC performance, network bandwidth) and by the way how
the sensor and VS Monitoring are configured (number of models, cycle times...). If you realise that your
system becomes slow, it might be nesseccary to deactivate some sensor configurations in VS Monitoring
or the reduce some cycle times.

12.2  Differences between O2D, O2I and O2V sensors

12.2.1  Result data size

On the one side the data size of a result depends on the sensor type and on the other side it depends on
how many objects/codes/models were found in the image.
Result files:

O2D ~10 KB
O2I ~1 KB up to 10 KB:
Depends on how many codes were found in the image. The average file size
should be approximately 5 KB.
O2V ~10 KB up to 1000 KB:
Depends on the number of models and on how many objects were found in the
image. The average file size should be in the range from 10 KB to 100 KB.

Images:
The size of the image files is the same for each sensor. Normal images need ~300 KB disk space and
overlay images need ~900 KB.

12.2.2  Details
Result details can be enabled/disabled for monitoring results and service report results in the sensor
configuration window. This detailed information depends on the sensor type:

O2D Contours, tolerances, detailed model result data

O2I Especially code quality parameters
O2V Overlay data of models

Disabling detailed information might reduce the result file size a lot.

12.2.3  Data acquisition

O2D and O2I sensors do synchronous communication. Results, service reports and statistics must be
polled with a specific cycle time. O2V sensors do asynchronous communication. Therefore no polling is
needed and the fields for cycle times are disabled in the sensor configuration window.
Also the O2V plugin does not update statistics continuously. It is updated when a new monitor result
was received. Until the first monitor result was received there will be no statistics displayed in the main
window.

monitor windows at the same time.
Monitoring The monitoring functionality of VS Monitoring. With this functionality it is
possible to get the current result of a sensor frequently and to display it in a
monitor window or to save it automatically. The user can define the frequency UK
of polling monitoring results from the sensor and the content of such a result
(image, details...).
Monitoring result A result that is displayed/saved while the monitoring functionality is used for a
sensor.
Monitor window A window that displays the current decoding result of one sensor
Overlay Overlay is the additional information that is displayed in the sensor image in
monitor and result windows (bounding boxes, contours, decoding time...)
Polling Polling means the request for new sensor data and - if available - the transfer
of this data to the PC software. Polling can be enabled for monitoring, service
reports and statistics.
Result A decoding result of a sensor. It contains the information that is provided by the
monitor mode of the parameterisation applications and can be stored to a local
disk. Results are displayed in monitor windows or when they were saved in
result windows.
Result window Views the results that were stored to a specific folder. Can be opened in the VS
Monitoring GUI.
Sensor One of the ifm vision sensors of the O2D, O2I or O2V family.
Service report A list of the last results of a sensor that can be saved to disk. Service reports
can be collected manually or automatically with a specific frequency. The user
can define the frequency of polling service report results from the sensor and
the content of such a result (image, details...).
Service report result A result as element of a service report. It is saved to disk and can be displayed
in a result window.
