chool uniforms have always been an issue. People still have arguments for and
against wearing them. The major point “for” school uniforms is that they unite
students and show which school they go to. This is very widespread in the UK,
where nearly every school has a particular design of the uniform.
B. W
e should also remember that school uniforms are practical clothes. They are
made from harmless materials and your body feels comfortable. Most of the
uniforms are designed in a way that allows students to take part in different
school activities. They are usually appropriate for classroom lessons, outdoor
activities and for doing sports.
C. H
owever, lots of children say that school uniforms are uncomfortable to wear.
Some children are allergic or sensitive to certain materials. Others do not like
buttons or zippers. Many girls, for example, do not like to wear skirts or dresses,
which most girls’ uniforms require. Of course, no uniform can suit all children.
D. S
chool uniforms level students from different backgrounds and families. By
wearing the same clothes, you will never tell how wealthy a student’s family is.
So, it helps to prevent students from poor families from bullying. On the other
hand, school uniforms stop children from being creative and showing their
individuality in clothes.
E. S
tudents’ safety is top priority for most schools. There have been cases of
intruders coming to schools for various reasons. Even though such cases are rare,
school authorities also say that school uniforms are important for safety reasons.
Uniforms help teachers and school staff to distinguish between students and
strangers and to prevent bad things from happening.

B. M
ost people believe in success. It is important in sport, politics and business. Take
our education systems: they are based on the idea of encouraging people to be
successful. Success at exams means entrance to university. Success at university
often means a good job. People who work hard often get higher positions, and
so on.
C. S
uccess models often teach us to follow rules and procedures. This encourages
people to stick to old ideas. Specialists say that we should value our mistakes and
failure too. On the other hand, people who take risks often think creatively and
come up with new and sometimes impossible ideas. And they are told they are
wrong. In our fast-changing world, this is not good.
D. S
uccessful employers are sure that if you criticise employees’ good ideas, they
will give up. One of them gives an example. If you send a group of explorers to a
new land to find mineral resources and they can’t, you should not blame them for
this. Otherwise, they will quit.
E. T
his also concerns learning a foreign language. Sometimes you have to take risks,
because then it becomes difficult to communicate. When you are trying to talk
to a foreigner, and they don’t understand you, then you should try to find a
different way of saying what you want to say. So making a mistake sometimes
means making progress!

efore taking the test, one group knew nothing about the experiment. The other
group was told that stress is good for them and such symptoms as dry mouth
and fast heart beating show that the body prepares them for a challenge.
Interestingly enough, the results were quite different.
D. T
he people who did not know anything about the experiment showed signs of
damage to the blood vessels around the heart. Their stress during the test was at
high level. The second group, on the other hand, showed no signs of stress at all.
These results were confirmed by other tests. It seems that the effects of stress
depend on what you believe about stress!
E. S
uch experiments are useful for our understanding of stress. They prove that
you should accept any stressful situation without too much worrying. Remember,
that if you are sure that stress does harm, then it will definitely make things
worse. Try to relax and take difficulties as challenges that will make you stronger
and more experienced for the future.

sychologists say there are two types of people: those who love shopping and
those who hate it. The first group includes shopaholics that cannot live without
buying anything. They shop offline and online and spend a lot of money on the
things they actually do not need. Some people prefer window-shopping: they love
looking at goods in shop windows, and this is more than enough for them.
B. O
nline shopping is becoming more popular every year. According to a recent
report, over half of Americans with Internet access prefer shopping online. Just
1% say they have never shopped online. Experts agree that people spend on
average around $100 per online order. The most common types of goods bought
online include books, electronics, clothes and accessories, household appliances
and goods.
12
C. D
uring the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, online sales increased all over the
world. People on lockdown shopped online due to the fact that offline shopping
was limited in most countries. Large chains of supermarkets had more online
orders of food and household goods than before. Thus, experts say that shopping
online helped to reduce the number of infected people during the pandemic.
D. O
ffline shopping is still more appealing for those who either do not want to shop
online (or cannot for some reason), or prefer to look at the product closely before
buying it. This often concerns clothes that most people want to try on before
the purchase. Offline shopping for clothes saves them time from returning the
articles that do not fit back to the shop.
E. A
lot of people say that online shopping is best for books, magazines and journals.
There are samples of books available online, so you can look through the edition
before buyingit. Most online shops have gift certificates on sale. Such certificates
have become a good present for online or offline shoppers who can choose and buy
the item they like in the shop on their own.

A. P
eople often travel to other countries on holiday or on business. There are
traditions and rules in foreign countries that we should be aware of. When you
meet someone for the first time in Russia, America or Canada, it is polite to shake
hands firmly while looking them straight in the eyes. In most Asian countries
you should avoid physical contact and eye contact. For example, you should bow
in Japan.
B. C
lothes are important for many nations. Some countries have strict rules that
must be followed not to offend citizens. In Asian and Muslim countries, you
shouldn’t reveal the body, especially if you are a woman. In Japan, you should
take off your shoes when entering a house. The shoes have to be placed neatly
together facing the door you came in. This is also true in China, Korea, Thailand,
and Iran.
13
C. W
hat about mealtimes? In some countries lunch is the biggest meal of the day. In
Italy, Spain, or Latin America it can last for hours. Because of this, many people
have a light breakfast and a late dinner. In Asian countries lunch is often the
time to relax and socialise. In Greece, for example, dinner is eaten late and it lasts
for hours with plenty of tasty dishes.
D. B
usinesspeople often cooperate with foreign companies to develop or extend their
businesses. Business cards are important for first meetings everywhere. They
often have two sides with the information in two languages. In many countries,
working hours are from 9.00 or 10.00 am to 5.00 or 6.00 pm. In Asia, you will
most likely be invited to a restaurant after work and you should not refuse even
if you are tired.
E. T
here are some other rules in certain countries that you should remember to
be polite. In India and the Middle East, you must never use your left hand for
greeting, eating or drinking. Most South Americans and Mexicans do not keep
social distance and like to stand very close to you when they are talking. Do not
back away. In Ireland, you may be asked to sing after a social event.

Грамматика и лексика
15

Years ago, people did not even hear of computers. British mathematician
Charles Babbage designed a kind of computer in the mid-1800s, but it took more than
a century to create a computer. The first computer was huge, of the size of
a minibus, and weighed a ton. Today, computer technology is the fastest growing
industry in the world. Computers are everywhere. They vary from large desktops
to small smartphones that work as computers and can fit into your hand. These
are useful tools for work, studies and hobbies. Large companies work hard to invent
and produce new types of computers that are fast and fulfil all our needs.

In most cases parents want their children to speak a foreign language, especially
English, the global language. Russian schools provide good language education for
schoolchildren. People learn English for different purposes: for fun, for business,
for communication and others. Today, knowledge of English is also necessary if you
want a successful career. Lots of employers look for candidates who speak English
well. Some jobs require a second foreign language, the most popular of which are
German, Spanish, French and Asian languages. English has become the international
language for communication and travelling.

On the 5th of November 1605, Guy Fawkes tried to kill King James I of England.
He and a group of his friends put 38 barrels of gunpowder under the Houses of
Parliament in London. But the King’s men found the gunpowder and then arrested
Guy Fawkes. They took him to the Tower of London and cut off his head. Today,
Guy Fawkes’ Day is celebrated in Britain on the 5th of November. On this day, the
British build “bonfires” in their gardens and burn a straw figure of Guy Fawkes. To
buy fireworks, children often ask for money in the streets saying, “Penny for the
guy!”.

Pollution is one of the most common problems of today. Every year industry dumps
about 1,000 million tons of waste and harmful substances into the atmosphere.
Scientists say that by 2030, about 25% of all animals, birds, fish and insects may
become extinct. Today we cut down more and more trees to make paper, to export and
import wood. Cutting down trees is called “deforestation”. It makes trees disappear
and at the same time puts plenty of animals and plants in danger. Rainforests give
50% of world’s oxygen and contain millions of species living there. Their habitats
are destroyed by deforestation.

A. I n ancient times people were sure that gods were responsible for weather
conditions. To have good weather for growing crops and comfortable living,
ancient people often prayed their gods and even brought presents to them. Today,
scientists from all over the world are looking for the ways to control weather.
Due to the weather change because of global warming, this problem has become
important for our world.
B. S
cientists have been working on methods to create or prevent rain for quite some
time now. The best-known technique is called “cloud seeding”. This means putting
chemicals into the air to encourage any water in the air to form clouds and rain.
However, it works only when there are clouds in the sky. So if there is a drought,
there aren’t usually any clouds, and cloud seeding is helpless.
36
C. I n some countries, during important national and international events chemicals
are used to get rid of the clouds, so that it does not rain during the event. Take
Russia’s Victory Day, for example. When the weather is not good, the clouds are
got rid of with the help of chemicals. In fact, it is often sunny in Red Square on
May 9th, but the clouds and the rain come to the other areas of Moscow.
D. I s it actually a good idea to try and change the weather? Are chemicals harmless?
This is one of the things scientists need to find out. There is some concern that
creating rain in one area of the world might take it away from somewhere else.
But in terms of the chemicals, a group of scientists from Switzerland have found
a solution by using lasers to control the weather.
E. T
he experiments have shown that pulses of light from a laser can be used to make
rain clouds, without any chemicals. Scientists also think that lasers can be used
to direct storms away from certain buildings, such as airports or military bases.
Specialists are sure this type of technology is more helpful rather than harmful.
Still, lots of people feel that we should not play with the weather like this.

During the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, lots of students all over the world had
to learn online. Not only students of universities or colleges, but schoolchildren too.
Russia was one of the first countries that made people learn and work from home. It
was difficult at first, especially for sociable and communicative children who had to
take lessons without any live contact but via webcams and microphones. One of the
most common problems of that period was unstable Internet connection in distant
places of Russia. Some children also claim that they had headaches more often than
before because of computer screens.

A. P
eople have always played games or watched others playing. Some of the
games and sports events date back to ancient times when people were looking
for entertainment. Without modern inventions like the radio, television, or the
Internet, ancient life seems too boring to us. On the other hand, people used to
communicate more. They also invented games that are still popular today. The
Olympic Games, for example, or such board games as chess or checkers.
B. F
or some people there is nothing better than to attend sports events at stadiums.
They say that the atmosphere is wonderful and it helps unite sports fans to
support their favourite teams. However, not everyone has a chance of attending
a live sports event due to various reasons, so they prefer watching big games at
home on TV or the Internet. But what about other games?
C. L
ive quests have recently become popular among young people and adults. Such
quests take place at different locations, depending on the topic of the quest. They
can be held at deserted buildings, underground or in apartments. Such games
encourage participants to think and solve different puzzles. Some are funny;
40
some are scary. Unfortunately, there were bad cases when people were injured
during quests, so organisers are required to follow strict safety rules.
D. A
group quiz is another interesting and popular free-time activity for those who
love to answer questions and challenge their knowledge. Such quizzes usually
take place in cafе′ s or large halls in teams of 2 up to 15 people in each. The main
task is to give the maximum number of correct answers to win a prize. During
such quizzes people eat and drink and have fun at the same time.
E. M
ost live games were limited during the coronavirus pandemic in 2020. In some
countries, sports events and other live contests were cancelled and moved to
another year. Take the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo or the Eurovision Song
Contest. This led to the increase of online games. They allow people to compete
with players all over the world in real time. Such games are often broadcast online
and anyone can watch them.

Задание 1
Julia: Hi, Pete! I need to talk to you about something. Have you got a minute?
Pete: Hi, Julia. What’s up?
Julia: It’s about the Literature club. I thought maybe you would like join it.
Pete: Oh, no. Are you kidding? I hate writing. It has always been hard for me to
write, even a short essay.
Julia: You do not hate writing! I think you’d be a great author. You even got the
first prize for your essay last month. That’s a success!
Pete: So what? I was just lucky. And the topic of the essay was not complicated.
I think writing is dull. I’m more interested in acting. That’s what I am thinking
of doing after I leave school.
Julia: Well, acting is something I can’t stand! But we write plays for the Drama
club, so I have friends there and I can talk to the supervisor. I’m sure they will be
happy to have you as an actor. What do you think?
Pete: Oh, well, all right. If you can, please do. When do they meet? On Tuesdays?
I’m very busy with my studies, you know … .
Julia: Not any more. The Drama club meetings are on Wednesdays now, not on
Tuesdays.
Задание 2
Jack: Hey, Susan. How are you?
Susan: Hi, Jack. Very busy, actually! I’m going to the gym.
Jack: You are always busy, dear. What’s your usual day like?
Susan: I wake up at 6.30, take a shower and have breakfast at 7.
Jack: Wow! You’re an early bird. I never wake up before 8. My lessons start at 9.
Susan: Lucky you! My school starts at 8 and finishes at 2 pm.
Jack: And then you go to the gym, right?
Susan: Yes, but on Mondays and Wednesdays only. I really like it. It keeps me fit.
Jack: What do you do on the other days?
Susan: Well, on Tuesdays I go to the school Ecology club. I’m “green”, you know.
And on Thursdays I have music lessons at home.
Jack: Cool! Do you play any musical instrument?
Susan: Haha, oh no. I practise singing. I’d like to take part in the school song contest
next year.
Jack: I really admire you! When do you have a day off without any activities?
Susan: It’s usually on Friday. I do my homework after school to be ready for my
lessons on Monday and then I can relax a bit.
Jack: What do you do?
Susan: I watch YouTube, read books or magazines and talk with my friends.
Sometimes we go shopping together.
Jack: And what about weekends?
Susan: I spend Saturdays with my parents. We often go somewhere together. Last
week we went on a picnic. And on Sundays I have dancing lessons.
72
Jack: That sounds like a lot of fun.
Susan: It is! Dancing helps me get ready for a new week.
Задание 3
Laura: Hi, Jim. You’re at the computer again! What are you doing?
Jim: Oh, I’m applying for a new IT-course at an online school.
Laura: Good! What class have you chosen, programming?
Jim: No, that’s too tough for me. I want to apply for a web-design course.
Laura: Web-design? Wow. That sounds difficult.
Jim: Well, you should know the basics in the modern world. The Internet is the
future. How about you, Laura? Would you like to join?
Laura: You know me! I’m not into learning online. I prefer offline lessons. There is
nothing better than a live conversation in class.
Jim: Yes, but I have enough offline learning at school. I want something different.
Moreover, you can learn online at any time you want.
Laura: True! Let’s see what they offer … . Hmmm … . Making podcasts sounds
interesting. You know I love social networks and often listen to different podcasts.
Jim: Oh, social networks … . they are so addictive … .
Laura: I know. But they are nice for communication and creativity.
Jim: I follow you on TikTok and I like your videos, by the way. Maybe you should
take a course on making videos?
Laura: Hey, that’s a nice idea. Let’s see what your online school has on this topic … .
Задание 4
Betty: Hello?
Phil: Hi, Betty, it’s Phil. Could you do me a favour?
Betty: What kind of favour, Phil?
Phil: Jane Ferguson, from the sales department, fell down and broke her arm. And
I’m out of town with a very poor connection. Could you please call the florist’s and
have them send her some flowers to the hospital? You can order online, if it’s more
convenient.
Betty: Oh, sure. You mean Rose’s flower shop next to our office or another one?
Phil: It doesn’t matter, really. Just any flower shop that offers a delivery. Tell them
we want a nice bouquet for the occasion, around 12–15 pounds. I’ll transfer you the
money from my card if that’s OK.
Betty: Sure. Which hospital do they send the flowers to?
Phil: St. Michelle hospital, Room number – hang on, let me check the WhatsApp
message. Ah yes, 14c. And the name is Ferguson. F-E-R-G-U-S-O-N.
Betty: F-E-R-G-U-S-O-N. Got it.
Phil: Ask them to write a card to go with the flowers. Just something simple, like
‘Get well soon’.
Betty: Fine.
Phil: Oh, and Betty, tell the delivery that they should be at the hospital before the
visiting hours are over and that’s at half past 7.
Betty: Before 7:30 pm. OK, Phil. I’ll check the local flower shops. Maybe I’ll even ask
Laura to buy the flowers and bring them to the hospital not to pay for the delivery.
Anything else?
Phil: No, thank you! Keep me updated.

Задание 5
Bob: Hi, Helen. Sorry I’m late.
Helen: Hi, Bob, what happened?
Bob: Oh, nothing. I’ve just been running all over town looking for a present for my
grandad. It’s his anniversary tomorrow.
Helen: I see. What did you get him?
Bob: I got him a book about fishing. He loves fishing, so I think he’ll like it. Anyway,
the bookshop is right next to his house, so he can exchange the book if he wants.
And what did you do?
Helen: I went shopping with Claire, a friend of mine and Sam, my brother. I bought
a lovely blouse at “Lily’s”. You know, it is a small shop on Park street. Claire got a
new pair of sandals for the summer. She’s flying to Greece for a beach holiday with
her family.
Bob: Sandals? That’s a good idea. I need a pair of flip-flops by the way. What about
Sam?
Helen: Well, he didn’t like anything at “Lily’s”. We went to the “Starbridge”
shopping centre and he bought a new T-shirt and green trainers. Green is his
favourite colour. He was happy.
Bob: Cool! I often have a tough time choosing clothes. I’m rather small for my age,
so it’s hard to find clothes that’d fit me. The only shop that has my size is “Tony’s
Corner” on Maple Drive.
Helen: That shop isn’t cheap … !
Bob: I know. That’s why I don’t go there too often. About once per 6 months or so.
I save money.
Helen: I wish I could do the same. But I’m a shopaholic, I’m afraid … .

Tom: Hey, buddy, what happened to you? Don’t tell me you broke your leg!
Bill: No, it’s not that drastic. I just twisted my ankle. Still, it hurts a lot, and
walking with these crutches is annoying!
Tom: So when did it happen?
Bill: It was the night of the basketball championship. And the worst thing is that we
lost the game and all hopes of winning our title back.
Tom: What a pity! Sit down here for a minute and tell me all about it.
Bill: Well, it all happened last Thursday. It was raining hard and was also freezing.
Tom: Yes, the weather was horrible!
Bill: True. So I was in a hurry to get to the gym early to chill out a bit before the
game. I was all stressed out about the game when I left home, but I got in my car and
started driving to the gym.
Tom: You should have taken a taxi. It’s dangerous to drive when you are stressed.
Bill: Right. All of a sudden, my mobile rang – it was my mum. She was all excited
about the game and wanted to wish me good luck. We kept on talking when I suddenly
realised that the cars in front of me stopped, and I was going a little fast. I slammed
on the brakes, but it was too late. The street was wet, and I hit the car that stopped
in front of me.
Tom: Oh, no!
Bill: That hard braking caused me to twist my ankle. I could hardly get out of the
car to talk to the other driver because my ankle hurt so much.
Tom: You must have been in shock!
Bill: To tell you the truth, I was so freaked out I didn’t know what to do. I was
thinking about the game, my mum, my teammates – it never occurred to me that I
wouldn’t be able to play that night.
Tom: Did you call the police?
Bill: Sure. Finally, a policeman came and made me sign some papers; then an
ambulance took me to hospital. Luckily, my ankle wasn’t broken, but I couldn’t play
basketball that night. And now I’m stuck with these crutches.
