六 Reading & Cloze

Reading
Five years ago, David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day. “I was a

clothes addict,” he jokes. “I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change
if my clothes got wrinkled.” Today David wears casual clothes-khaki pants and a sports
shirt-to the office. He hardly ever wears a necktie. “I’m working harder than ever,” David
says, “and I need to feel comfortable.”
More and more
ore companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes
to
o work. In the United States, the change from formal to casual office wear has been
gradual. In the early 1990s, many companies allowed their employees to wear casual
clothes on Fridays (but only on Friday). This became known as “dress-down Friday” or

for employees
“casual Friday.” “What started out as an extra one-day-a-week benefit fo
has really become an everyday thing,” said business consultant Maisly Jones.
hy have so many companies started allowing their employees to wear casual
Why
clothes? One reason is that it’s easier for a company to attract new employees if it has a
casual dress code. “A lot of young people don’t want to dress up for work,” says the
owner of a software company, “so it’s hard to hire people if you have a conservative
dress code.” Another reason is that people seem happier and more productive when
they are wearing comfortable clothes. In a study conducted by Levi Strauss and

Company, 85 percent of employers said that they believe that casual dress improves
employee morale. Only 4 percent of employers said that casual dress has a negative

helps them save money. “Suits are expensive, if you have to wear one every day,” one
person said. “For the same amount of money, you can buy a lot more casual clothes.”

( )4 According to this passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?

of the speech, I suddenly 2 like a computer forced to shut down. The next few lines
just wouldn’t come to my mind. The time was frozen, and I felt numbness spreading from
my head to toes. All I remember was the judges’ stern gazes, as if I committed a crime. I

forgot how I ended the speech, but it was the most 3
3 moment in my life. Because of
that, I developed a serious stage fright and didn’t join speech contests 4 .
During the years in high school, I was always speechless onstage, even though it’s
just a simple self-introduction. Finally, I realized 5

college. I took a course called “English Presentation Skills,” which is the bravest decision

be scared by the stage and the audience, I would rehearse repeatedly in the lobby of the

8 “practice makes perfect” is not
a cliché. There is no shortcut to giving a fluent and complete speech. I believe 9
double efforts can make up for the advantages I lost. In that semester, I successfully
overcame the stage fright. Although I still remember the bad experience vividly, it always

Reading & Cloze

Reading
People cherish a lot of things in life. Some people really cherish their family. Others
think it important to acquire knowledge. One of the things people value is friendship.
Without friends, who would help us in the face of difficulties? Who would cheer us up
when we face failure? Without friends, we would lead a life of melancholy. However,
although friendship plays an indispensable role in our lives, many people consider it

ard to make friends. A fine way to make friends and introduce yourself to your
hard
neighbors in Norway is to present them with a simple gift like a cake or a loaf of bread.
Such a gift warms their hearts as well as their stomachs. If you give them expensive
gifts, they may become suspicious of your intentions. If you have never baked a cake
before, it may take you
u months to produce a beautiful cake that can stand upright
ithout collapsing. But don’t wait for perfection. That moment may never come in this

lifetime, and you’ll never make any Norwegian friends. Do your best, and when you think
your creation is good enough to give away, do it. Norwegians are not picky people. They

will appreciate your honest gesture of friendship even if your bread is kind o
of hard, and
he cake looks... “interesting.” So is it really so difficult to make a new friend? In fact,

Reading & Cloze

Reading
Penguins are popular around the world, primarily for their unusually upright,
waddling pace, attractive appearance, and lack of fear of humans. With their appealing
characteristics, penguins have commonly been the subject of many books, stories,
cartoons, and documentary films.
Generally, there are 17 known species of penguins in the world. All of them live in

the Southern Hemisphere and have
e ssimilar
imilar appearance-white fronts and black or blue-
grey
rey backs. The colors of their feathers not only make them look like wearing tuxedo
suits, but also help them hide from their main predator in the sea-the leopard seal.
If a leopard seal is swimming below a penguin and looking up from below, it has difficulty
distinguishing between a white penguin belly and the reflective water surface. If a
leopard seal
eal is swimming above, the penguin’s dark back mixing with the sea makes it
invisible to the enemy.
Penguins are actually birds; yet unlike the other birds, penguins’ wings have turned

into flippers. In the sea, penguins can swim and dive with a push of their flippers and
travel nine meters underwater before surfacing. On land, penguins use their flippers for

make possible is “tobogganing”, in which penguins slide on their bellies, row with their
feet and control directions with flippers when traveling over snow and ice. Penguins use
this method of traveling when they are in a hurry.

Aristotle said, “Man is by nature a social animal.” That is 1 some feel pain

listed a few species that are self-isolating. Here are three of them: blue whales, polar
bears and jaguars.
Blue whales, the largest animals on earth, often go either alone or in pairs. Actually,
they are not only the largest, but the loudest animals. When seeking a partner during
mating period, blue whales would let out a loud and low-pitched call, with the voice

Because of that, they are rarely attacked or hunted.
Another example would be polar bears, which are the largest land carnivores in the
world. Polar bears are truly strong

hostile conditions. Adult polar bears tend to be solitary. They don’t form social groups
and often wander around ice and water looking for preys. There is only one exception:
mating seasons. From the late spring to early summer, male polar bears would know

7 their partners are according to the female bears’ scent. Once they find each
other, they would stay together for roughly a week before they are parted.
Thirdly, jaguars, which are attractive and dangerous at the same time, can be found
mostly in the Amazon rainforest. Some people wonder 8 jaguars get the special
name. According to WFF, the name originates from an indigenous word “yaguar,” which
means “he who kills with one leap.” With such skills and speed, it’s not that h

As the Chinese are used to giving red envelops, setting off firecracker on New
Year’s Eve, different traditions are carried in different cultures on the last evening of a
year. Take Japanese for example. They may hold “Forgetting Gathering” to say good-
bye to the past ,and eat long noodles to wish that they could live long lives. Like the
Chinese, the elders in Japanese family also give “lucky
“lucky money” to the younger. However,
it’s placed in a small white envelop instead of red envelop. As for the Scots, they would
visit their friends and neighbors bringing special gifts such as coal or whisky on New
Year’s Eve.

This important ritual is called “First footing,” which represents good luck. In Portugal,
when the clock strikes twelve on the Eve, the Portuguese would eat twelve grapes,
which may
ay bring them good luck in the upcoming twelve months. Girls in Lithuania have
n interesting tradition on New Year’s Eve. They may write twelve men’s names on
an
different pieces of paper, and put them under their pillows along with another piece of
blank paper. When they wake up the next morning, they pull out one of them. The name
on the paper might be the man they would marry. If it’s the blank paper, that means they
have to wait another year for their love.

What matters most when it comes to cross-cultural communication? I would say
curiosity, understanding and respect. This is the most 1 lesson I’ve learned from
Lisa, who comes from Vermont and has lived in Taiwan for five years. These years, she
has experienced some culture shocks and often shared them with me.
Take “personal space” for example. If you live in Taipei, you’re probably getting used
to the crowded MRT or bus in rush hour. It is also normal if someone stands in front of

you when you 2 .. However, it’s a different case in Lisa’s country. In the U.S., the
personal space is bigger than that in Asian countries, which means they tend to keep
longer distance from strangers. Once their personal space 3 , they might step back
at once or show their desire to get away. Simila
Similarly,
rly, when people 4 each other, the
ways differ widely in different cultures. For example, if meeting someone for the first
time, Americans usually give a firm handshake, while French often greet each other with
two kisses on each cheek, and the Maori greet by touching each other’s nose. Whatever
the cases are, remember not to pat someone on the shoulders or 5 others’ arms

unless you know them very well.
ell. Touching a stranger is a big no-no when speaking of
personal space.

Another lesson 6 from Lisa is the cross-cultural communication in the

workplace. According to Edward Hall’s Beyond Culture,
Culture people of high-context culture
(such as Japan and Russia) tend to communicate in an implicit way. On the contrary,
those of low-context culture (such as America and Romania) prefer to state their ideas

as clearly as possible. This is why some people 7 when working with foreign
colleagues. For
or instance, Lisa tends to go straight to the point in a conversation, but her
Asian
sian co-workers would regard it as a personal criticism and hence feel ill at ease. In
fact, people of low-context culture don’t take things personally. Even if they argue
fiercely in the days, they can still go for a drink together when 8 as if nothing
happened.
On one hand, we have to learn more about different
diff erent cultures, so that we won’t make
obvious mistakes such as patting children on the heads in Thailand. 9 , we have to

be open-minded, so that we won’t get offended so easily. This is a world full of 0 . If
we decided not to limit ourselves, there are a lot more wonders waiting for us to explore!
