1 Purpose
The product filter is a component of the Sandvik process system for the cooling, solidification and
processing of liquid products (for example sulphur, pitch etc.). Dirt particles and impurities are fil-
tered out of the product by means of a strainer basket. This increases the efficiency and opera-
tional reliability of the equipment.
The filters are heated by saturated steam (in the heating jacket), thus keeping the medium to be
filtered in a liquid state.
2 Safety
The safety instructions given in the user documentation must be followed absolutely. Individual
operating instructions for the equipment components, including their safety instructions, must be
observed absolutely.
Fire protection measures specified by the local fire brigade, e.g. fire protection zones and firewalls,
must be observed in every instance.
Disregarding the regulations for the operating safety of the equipment can lead to personal injuries
and damage to property.
3 Ambient conditions
Conditions for the storage and operation of all plant parts (including electric parts, if in suppliers
delivery):
When there is risk of frost the water of the plant has to be drained.
4 Prohibited practices
It is forbidden:
to bypass or disable safety devices. This can lead to personal injuries and damage to
property.
to operate the equipment outside the permissible temperatures or pressures. This can
lead to personal injuries and damage to property.
to use the equipment, or parts of it, in other installations without first consulting the manu-
facturer. This can lead to personal injuries and damage to property.
to modify the equipment without consulting the manufacturer. This voids the manufactur-
er’s warranty.
5 Personnel
As a matter of principle, all work on the equipment is to be carried out by qualified personnel who
possess the necessary certificates of competency (e.g. installation, commissioning, operation,
maintenance and repair).
Qualified personnel in the sense of these operating instructions are persons familiar with the erec-
tion, assembly, adjustment and commissioning of the product and who have the necessary qualifi-
cations for their assigned work, as e.g.:
Connecting pipe runs must be installed and connected according to industry practice and stress-
free.
The pipes must be installed in such a way, that the allowable stresses and the load on the flanges
are not exceeded. Observe the values given below in the table or the regulations on the installa-
tion plan. If the permitted load is exceeded, parts may be damaged.
The thermal expansion must be considered in pipe routing and assembly. Damage to components
can occur if the permissible loads are exceeded.

Fill the filter unit with liquid product and bleed the air via the bleed screw.
Before commissioning, the equipment is to be cleaned to the extent possible from contaminants as
welding beads, hammer scales, rust spots and scaling. This is to prevent the strainers from be-
coming too dirty during commissioning. Too high rise in resistance in the fluid circuit can give the
impression of failures that delay start-up.
Following commissioning, all connecting bolts must be tightened again and the entire filter must be
checked for leaks.
A filter element located in the filter housing filters the impurities out of the liquid product.
The filter element must be exchanged or cleaned as soon as the flow falls below the minimum
permissible value. This is usually monitored by a minimum flow meter (not included in Ness’s
scope of supply).
8 Repair malfunctions
If the motor protection switch for the pump (not included in Ness’s scope of supply) has tripped, it
should not be switched on again more than once. If it trips again after restarting the pump, a spe-
cialist should be called in to rectify the fault.
If a leak is discovered, the filter unit must be switched off immediately and must be isolated from
the system by the shut-off valves.
The leak can then be repaired by a specialist and the filter unit put back into operation.
The component must have cooled down sufficiently before exchanging Safety
the filter element, otherwise there is a serious risk of being scalded! notice!!
Before exchanging the filter, the filter station must be switched off and secured with a key against
being inadvertently switched on again.
Ensure by opening the bleed screw that the filter housing is not under pressure.
The filter housing can now be opened with the clip bolts and the filter element/strainer can be ex-
changed or cleaned.
A filter element with a suitable mesh size to suit the product must always be used.
10 Maintenance
Reliable and accident-free operation requires regular maintenance. Safety
The operating instructions for the individual components must be fol- notice!!
lowed.

(transport damage or valve repair) please issue a damage report immedi-
ately and return the components back to the manufacturer, if possible in
the original packaging. Returning shall be sent free of charge for AZ. Other
returning terms have to be agreed with the AZ sales department.
Please provide the following information as a minimum for the returned valves:

3. Safety instructions
Valves may only be used for the purpose that they have been
designed for.
5
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Never carry out any maintenance or repair work if
the valve is under pressure. Please consider that
some valves can trap pressurized medium (e.g. in
the plug of the plug valve).
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The piping system where the valve is installed
has to be pressure-free and any media over
pressure has to be released before dismounting.
Check potential risks which can be caused by
media residues. Please consider that media can
be released from the valve or piping during
dismounting.
For your own safety, please always use the correct protective
clothing or special equipment which is required for work with a
particular media.
the valve ends from mechanical damage and the internals from
environmental influences (e. g. dust, dirt etc.). The protective
caps shall only be removed when the valve is to be installed. The
valves shall be stored indoors in order to protect them from de-
structive influences like dirt, moisture and frost. The valves shall
be transported in solid and stable packaging to the place of instal-
lation. Lifting accessories (ropes, belts) shall only be attached to
the valve bodies. Never use the levers, gear boxes or actuators to
lift the valves.
IIMPORTANT NOTE: This does not apply for check valves, control
valves and sight glasses. These valves are marked with an arrow
indicating the flow direction. Valves which are equipped with a
plug with relief hole or a “T4”-plug, a notch on
the plug stem indicates the orientation of the
overpressure relief side.
7
In order to avoid valve damage caused by line impurities (swarf-, dirt,
welding residues) the pipeline must be emptied and cleaned before
installation of the valves. Prior to installation, ensure that the valve is in
open position and the valve end protection caps are removed. Check
the sealing surface of flanged valves for damage. In case the valve has
been stored without protection caps, please make sure that the valve is
clean inside. If necessary flush the valve with clean and dry air.
Valves types
Ball and plug valves are installed in pipeline systems by flang-
ing, screwing or welding and are designed to conduct, block
or control media flow.
Control valves are used for the adjustment and the relocation
of a certain process factor (mass flow, pressure, tempera-
ture). With sampling valves and sample systems representa-
tive samples are taken during the ongoing process out of
chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical systems in order
to monitor and control the media quality.
9
A sight glass with optical transparent glass can be used for
observing process flow. A strainer protects dirt sensitive
installations as measurement devices or pumps from line
impurities
IMPORTANT NOTE:
• Fully lined valves which are installed in zone 0 and 20 have to
be lined with conductive PFA material. A static eliminator device
has to be assembled in order to connect the plug with the body
(grounding).
• AZ valves can be operated manually (e.g. hand lever, gear box)
as well as mechanical or electrical (e.g. pneumatic, hydraulic or
electric actuator).
• For electrical and mechanical actuators and accessories an own
declaration of conformity according to code 94/9/EG may have
to be considered.

In accordance with ISO 5208 / EN 12266 and API 6D / API 598 hydros-
tatic strength tests using 1.5 times the nominal pressure (housing) are
carried out at the factory. The complete valves are either tested hydrosta-
tically using the indicated valve nominal pressure or an air tightness test
using 6 bar is carried out.
For system specific pressure tests carried out by the operator the nomi-
nal pressure must not exceed 1.1 times of the value specified on the type
plate (also refer to section 2 “Marking”). For test pressures higher than
“1.1 x PN” there is the risk of damage to the PTFE (polytetrafluorethyle-
ne) seal. Higher pressure tests only after authorisation by AZ.

Instructions for storage of equipment
during storage on site
1. General
Plants and machine parts intended for overseas dispatch are packed
appropriately for sea transport by Sandvik as standard in the following steps:
The goods are arranged on a wooden pallet and enclosed in an airtight
aluminium foil.
Desiccants (drying agents) are placed inside the foil.
In the Sandvik packing/transport information sheets 1 and 2 you will find
detailed specifications for the handling of such pre-packed pallets when
loading and unloading the container.
If expressly agreed in the contract or if necessary, highly sensitive goods are
packed in wooden crates to protect against mechanical damage or corrosion.
