Essays In Analytical Philosophy

Vsevolod Ladov. Formal Realism. The article presents an argument in defense of
ontological realism. The author introduces formal realism as a methodological
requirement to accept the existence of objective reality on the grounds that rela
tivism proves to be self-contradictory.
Lolita Makeeva. Scientific Realism, Truth and Underdetermination of Theories
By Empirical Data. The article offers an investigation of some contemporary
philosophical arguments against realism, especially W..O.Quines argument that
scientific theories are underdetermined by empirical data. The author argues
that neither of the existing anti-realist arguments succeeds in refuting realism.
Evgeniy Lednikov. Ontological Problems in Light of Analytical Philosophy. A case
against essentialism in metaphysics is presented. The author introduces a theory
of epistemic modalities based on R.Carnaps theory of conceptual frameworks.
He argues that all contexts of existence should be analyzed in terms epistemic
modalities and explores some applications of this theory in philosophy of science.
Grigory Olkhovikov. Knowledge as True Justified Belief: How to Neutralize Counterexamples. The author develops a logical method to solve E.Gettiers puzzle
about the nature of knowledge. He argues that the classical definition provides
necessary but not sufficient requirements for knowledge and offers its modifica
tion designed to be necessary as well as sufficient.
Ekaterina Vostrikova. Knowledge and Causal Justification. The article explores the
externalist approach to the explication of knowledge. The author argues that
externalism about knowledge results from a transferal of externalist methods in
the analysis of meaning and mental content. The author questions the validity of
such a transferal.
Petr Kusliy. Referential Functioning of Names. The article presents an argument
against strong descriptivism about names as well as against strong theories of
direct reference. It is argued that in different situations same names (as singular
terms that denote objects without directly describing them) can be used (and are
in fact used) either as disguised definite descriptions or as non-descriptive rigid
designators.
Alexander Nikiforov. Conditional Counterfactual Statements. The author analyses
N.Goodmans approach to counterfactuals, suggests an original classification of
counterfactual statements and considers some methodological obstacles to their
fully comprehensive analysis.
Yaroslav Shramko. Truth and Falsity: What Are Truth Values and Why They Are
Needed. The author explores the impact that G.Freges treatment of truth values
as abstract objects had on the development of logic. He uses a number of argu
ments to show that Freges approach to truth has a major philosophical signifi
cance as well.

Dmitry Ivanov. What Is It That Mary Does Not Know? What the Knowledge Argument Is About. The article provides an analysis of some arguments against physi
calism in philosophy of mind in order to show that physicalism is immune to most
of them. The author argues that the only insuperable obstacle for physicalism is
provided by the argument of first-person perspective.
Vassili Kuznetsov. Performativity and Levels of Communication. The author criti
cizes J.L.Austins speech-act theory and argues that a more comprehensive analy
sis of performative speech acts is possible. He offers an original classification of
speech acts and argues that understanding performative constructions is a key to
understanding the nature of communication.
Alexei Chernyak. Moral Luck. The author analyses the notion of luck in modern
moral philosophy and argues that moral luck should be considered a necessary
condition in moral formation of a person.
Natalia Kudryavtseva. Rationality of Justice: A Pursuit of Rational Foundations of
A Just Social Order. The author inquires into the cause of the difficulty to state
the rational foundations of the notion of social justice. She argues that a search of
such foundations is not a hopeless endeavor.
