(which is actually a gerund from <+ ) can be followed by a question word (or phrase) to give the
meaning: It depends on when/with whom/what/where/about what, etc.. However, unlike in the English
construction, (depending on) is not (necessarily) followed by a preposition. Instead, it is simply followed
by a question word (or phrase) such as , , , , , , , , , , ,
, etc. Like its English counterpart, is most often used in response to a question. For example, the
following questions could be answered by a number of phrases:
+ ?
- .
- .
-
It depends on what.
It depends about what.
It depends on what book it is.
+ ?

As a general rule, you cannot put an entire sentence after , the way you can with English it depends, e.g.
It depends on whether John brings his guitar. This sentence would be translated in an entirely different way into
Russian. Dont worry about it for now.

need; be in need of
The verb +... is somewhat bookish (though perfectly grammatical). Recall the more colloquial way of
expressing need, with the needer in dative, the thing needed in nominative, and a form of / /
/ which agrees with the nominative:
.
I need moolah.
He needs a pencil.
+ ? - .
+...
doubt something
,
?
, often +... cannot be used in the same way as English doubt. For now, we suggest you
learn the phrase I doubt that, which is probably the most commonly found phrase used
with this verb.
