A lake of tectonic origin in the southern part of Eastern Siberia, the deepest lake on the planet, the

largest natural reservoir of fresh water and the largest freshwater lake on the continent by area.

Olkhon Island

Olkhon Island is the most beautiful place on Lake Baikal. Its name comes from the Buryat word "oikhon"
- "little forest". Probably, the thickets of trees were here in the distant past.

The Baikal seal

There are 2,600 species of animals in Baikal and half of them can be found only here. And there are
whitefish, omul, grayling and Baikal sturgeon. In total, there are 27 species of fish that belong to the
category of endemics, that is, they are present only in this region. The Baikal seal is considered a local
attraction. Surprisingly, in the hungry season, when there is not enough food, she can delay her
pregnancy!

В Байкале водится 2600 видов животных и половину из них можно встретить только здесь. А еще
здесь водятся сиг, омуль, хариус и байкальский осетр. Всего насчитывается 27 видов рыб, которые
относятся к разряду эндемиков, то есть, присутствуют только в данном регионе. Местной
достопримечательностью считается байкальская нерпа. Удивительно, но в голодный сезон, когда
не хватает пищи, она может задерживать свою беременность!

The population

The population of the island barely exceeds one and a half thousand people. There are nine settlements
in total, the largest of which is the village of Khuzhir. Almost 90% of the population lives in the island
"capital". Most villages are located on the northwestern steppe coast. The climate is milder here, the
coast is more gentle, and the water in the Small Sea is warmer.

пунктов, крупнейшим из которых является поселок Хужир. В островной «столице» проживает
почти 90% населения. Большинство сел расположены на северо-западном степном побережье.
Здесь мягче климат, более пологий берег, а в Малом море более теплая вода.

Cape Burkhan and Shamanka Mountain

Olkhon is one of the islands of magical attraction, a sacred place of Buryat shamanism. The most famous
natural object was the rock on Cape Burkhan. She is called a Shaman. There is a grotto and a through
cave. According to legend, it was here that the owner of the island named Eugene lived, to whose
dwelling people had no right to approach.
This rock is one of the symbols of the island.

Ольхон – один из островов магического притяжения, священное место бурятского шаманизма.

Известнейшим природным объектом стала скала на мысе Бурхан. Её именуют Шаманкой. Здесь
есть грот и сквозная пещера. Согласно легенде, именно здесь жил хозяин острова по имени Эжин,
к жилищу которого люди не имели права приближаться.

Эта скала – один из символов острова.

Buddhist Stupa of Enlightenment on Ogoy Island

Off the coast of Olkhon, in the Strait of the Small Sea, there are Ogoy Islands. There is a modern
monument here, referring to the spiritual culture of the ancient inhabitants of these places.

The stupa of enlightenment is one of the symbols of Buddhism, the material embodiment of the
Buddha.

У берегов Ольхона, в проливе Малого моря, есть островок Огой. Здесь расположился
современный памятник, отсылающий к духовной культуре древних жителей этих мест.

Ступа просветления – один из символов буддизма, материальное воплощение Будды.
