1  Safety instructions
►► Follow the operating instructions.
►► Non-observance of the instructions, operation which is not in accordance with
use as prescribed below, wrong installation or incorrect handling can affect the
safety of operators and machinery.
►► For installation and prescribed use of the product the notes in the operating
instructions must be carefully observed and the applicable technical standards
relevant for the application have to be considered.
►► Failure to observe instructions or standards, especially any tampering with and/ UK
or modification to the product, will void the manufacturer’s liability.
►► Installation, electrical connection, set-up, operation and maintenance of the
unit must only be carried out by qualified personnel authorised by the machine
operator.
►► After installation the system has to be subjected to a complete function check.
►► In case of malfunction of the unit please contact the manufacturer. Any
tampering with the unit can seriously affect the safety of operators and
machinery. This is not permitted and leads to the exclusion of any liability and
warranty claims.

2  Functions and features

The belt rip and tear detection system is used to detect belt damage.

3  Installation / Set-up
3.1  Applications
IConveyor belts are used where materials need to be transported from A to B,
e.g. in the mining, cement, sand and gravel industries. A conveyor belt may get
damaged (e.g. by sharp-edged stones / materials) or become worn out during
operation. Such damage must be detected and the conveyor belt deactivated.
The belt rip and tear detection system is used to detect belt damage.
3
From time to time, repair measures like vulcanisation or splicing have to be carried
out. In large conveyor plants, impending belt damages are not always noticed. The
belt rip and tear detection system from ifm electronic detects the following types of
belt damage
-- parts of the belt have come off in shreds
-- belt edges are torn
-- facings of a repair point have come off
-- splices are defective
Rubber shreds protruding from the belt can get caught in a carrying roller station
and - in the worst case - tear up the belt or the belt facing along its entire length.
The same applies for broken and drooping steel ropes of an armoured belt.

4  Installation
►► Bore a hole for the push-on sleeve. Hole diameter: 23 mm.
►► Bore a hole for the hook. Hole diameter: 8.3 mm.
►► Fix the push-on sleeve and the hook using the supplied nuts.
►► Plug the push-fit fitting into the push-on sleeve.
►► Guide the chain under the conveyor belt and attach it to the hook.
►► Adjust the tension and shape of the chain by means of the chain links.
►► Start the conveyor and check the clearance between the belt and the tripping
chain.

Installation of components

5  Function
Pulling the tensioned chain activates the switching function of the belt rip and tear
detection system.
If only drooping rubber shreds and ropes are to be detected, the monitor is to be
installed under the top run. In this case, a tripping chain is tightened across the
conveyor belt with one chain end fixed to the conveyor belt structure. The other
chain end is inserted into the push-on sleeve with the push-fit fitting. The push-fit
fitting is connected to an inductive proximity sensor via a pull-off device. When the
tensioned tripping chain is touched by a rubber shred, the push-fit fitting separates
from the sensor and an electrical switching operation is triggered.
To cover the entire belt width, the system should be installed at a point where the
conveyor belt is only slightly troughed, e.g. in front of the drive or deflection roller
or behind a feeding point.
If monitoring shall include rubber shreds or torn wire ropes which protrude
upwards and may get caught in a roller of the return run, an additional belt rip
detection system must be installed under the return run.
5.1  Maintenance requirement
Every six months:
►► Check the proper functioning of the system by pulling the chain.
5
Damaged or faulty devices must be replaced. Repair is not permissible.

6  Electrical connection / Operation

The unit must be connected by a qualified electrician.
►► Disconnect power
►► The national and international regulations for the installation of electrical
equipment must be adhered to.
• Supply voltage 24 V DC (ZB0095)
• Supply voltage 20...250 AC/DC (ZB0096)
• Connect the unit
