postman, a policeman, a fireman, a taxi driver, a school-bus driver, a boatman, an
ambulance man, an accountant, a petrol attendant and a barman. Also, he and his
wife, Margaret, have a shop and a small hotel.
John lives and works on the island of Hava in the west of Scotland. Only 120
people live on Hava, but in summer 150 tourists come by boat every day.
Every weekday John gets up at 6.00 a.m. and makes breakfast for the hotel guests.
At 8.00 a.m. he drives the island’s children to school. At 9.00 a.m. he collects the post
from the boat and delivers it to all the houses on the island. He also delivers the beer
to the island’s only pub. Then he helps Margaret in the shop.
He says: ‘Margaret likes being busy, too. We never have holidays and we don‘t
like watching television. In the evenings Margaret makes supper and I do the
accounts. At 10.00 we have a glass of wine and then we go to bed. Perhaps our life
isn’t very interesting, but we like it.’

CHAPTER 11
Customer Satisfaction
At the end of this unit you will be able to:
1. Use polite words and expressions in daily conversations;
2. Improve your attitude towards and be more positive;
3. Make hygiene one of your priorities!

142
Read, Study, Analyze and…
Fake it till you Make it!

In life attitude is everything. Check the

people around you and observe their attitude.
Usually people mirror us, copy us
unconsciously. If you smile the person will
smile back to you. If you speak politely,
people will be polite with you as well.
Your attitude forms every event in your
life, even if you realize it or not.
The future belongs to the common man
with uncommon determination. "Almost
always, you have a choice as to what attitude
to adopt. There is nothing in any normal work
situation that dictates you must react one way
or another. If you feel angry about something
that happens, for instance, that's how you
choose to feel.

Nothing in the event itself makes it

absolutely necessary for you to feel that way.
It is your choice. And since you do have a
choice, most of the time you'll be better off if
you choose to react in a positive rather than a
negative way," says William N. Yeomans.

143
A CONFIDENT TRUCK DRIVER IS A GOOD TRUCK DRIVER

Confidence Affects Performance

A lack of confidence can affect the career
of a truck driver. If you do not have confidence
in your abilities and knowledge, you tend to
second-guess already made decisions and avoid
making future decisions. This is not something
a truck driver can afford as he drives down the
highway. Quick decision-making is part of the
truck driver's daily routine.
Most truck drivers have observed the consequences of poor self-confidence in car
drivers sharing the same roads. For example, picture the driver of a minivan who appears
to have no idea where to find a side street he is supposed to turn down. That driver may
slow down to a complete stop before changing his mind and accelerating again. An
extremely flustered driver may go so far as to attempt to back up in order to recover
from a missed turn. It even happens on the interstates. We have all seen drivers
dangerously backing along the shoulder after missing an exit.
On the other hand, the confident driver is one who is able to make decisions more
quickly. More importantly, he is also one who has the knowledge and experience to recover
from incorrect decisions without getting flustered or panicked. The confident driver is a
safer driver because he/she is not endangering others by way of poor decisions.
Dangers of Overconfidence
A strong level of self-confidence is generally a good thing in a truck driver. Having said
that, there are some dangers associated with being overconfident in a given situation. For
example, a driver can be so confident in his/her abilities to control a rig that he/she does
not take the necessary precautions during bad weather. Such overconfidence can lead to
a serious accident.

144
Clean and Healthy

How to stay clean on the road?!

1. HANDS: Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer. Whenever you are at a
rest stop take advantage of the warm water and soap.
2. FACE: If water is not available, a sanitizer wet tissue is always a good idea!
3. MOUTH: A toothbrush and toothpaste can do wonders, no kidding. Please,
Brush your teeth, keep them healthy and yet, save others from your bad breath. This
will also keep up your self-respect. Chew minty gum when there just isn't a time or
place to brush your teeth.
4.BODY: Don’t postpone a shower when you have a chance, shower. If it is
impossible some days, use wet wipes to freshen up. A quick wipe down will do
wonders for your peace of mind. Shave when you get the chance. That alone can

Don’t Forget to Be Polite!
Or at least, fake it, till you make it!

Politeness is very important in life.

There are many reasons why politeness is important in life but one of them is that if
you’re polite, you are more likely to achieve your objectives and get what you want.
Also, people are more likely to take you seriously and deal with you in a good way.
1. Don’t impose!
People have their own personal space. They don’t want to be pressured into
doing something they don’t really want to do. They want to be treated as
individuals. I f you impose, invade their personal space, and try to get them to do
things they don’t want to do, they might reject you. They might not want to deal
with you and won’t respond to you in a positive way. So, don’t order or command.
2. Give Options.
When you ask someone to do something, give them options which they can
refuse or accept. If you have a suggestion, give people the option to accept or refuse
it, and give them the option to think of a suggestion of their own.
3. Make the other person feel good.
People want to feel positive and in control of the situation. They want to
know that you respect them. Sow them that you respect them, after that they will do
everything you want them to do!
We feel better when other people look at us and say ‘I like this person; I
respect this person. If you’re polite, you save their positive public image.
