Содержание
TOEFL – экзамен на знание английского языка (обязательный вступительный экзамен)
SAT – тест для поступления в американские вузы (факультативный экзамен с осени 2014 г.)
На бесплатный экзамен будут приглашены те, кто заполнит онлайн анкету до 15 декабря
2014 г. Всем зарегистрировавшимся необходимо распечатать, заполнить и принести на тест
Admission Form (page 25 of Examinee Handbook). С собой на экзамене нужно также иметь паспорт, 2
карандаша (HB или №2), ластик и точилку. Вы не сможете использовать результаты AUBG
Бесплатный экзамен TOEFL ITP (Institutional paper-based TOEFL) длится 115 минут, т.е.
почти 2 часа. TOEFL ITP легче, чем полная версия TOEFL: в нем нет ни speaking, ни essay. Всего 140
вопросов в формате множественного выбора (multiple choice). Пройти пробный тест, приближенный
к бесплатному TOEFL ITP, можно здесь. Экзамен Institutional TOEFL состоит из 3 частей:
30 rather short dialogues, 1 question each (usually about the meaning of what was said)
2-3 long conversations, 3-5 questions each (usually wh-questions, asking for specific information)
3-4 talks (lectures), 3-5 questions each (What’s the lecture about? Why does the speaker say…?)
Sample:
You hear:
Man It looks like they're getting ready to start the highway project again.
Woman I'm not surprised.
Narrator What does the woman imply about the project?
You read in your Test Booklet:
Correct answer – (A). She’s not surprised that the project is to be started all over again.
Other possible questions: What does she mean? / say about… ? / suggest ….? Also: What will she probably
do? Or: What can be inferred from the dialogue?
Tips:
You will hear the passage ONCE only. Questions are NOT written. Do not panic!
Listen to IDEAS, not to words! Even if you do NOT understand a word, you can still get the main
idea.
Try to distinguish between the main idea of the lecture and the related information, such as talking
about the classroom business (e.g. class schedule, marks, rules / policies) or the previous lecture
(usually introduced by such phrases as: As you will recall… You will remember that… In the last
class… In the previous lecture… We were discussing…).
Pay attention to such phrases as:
Now this is important… The point is… Remember that… The basic concept is… The issue is…
They usually introduce some important information.
Also listen to the repetition / restatement:
Let me say that again… Let me repeat that… I mean… To say that another way… In other
words… They put a special emphasis on the information, which is a sign it’s important.
Sometimes speakers change their mind and decide on something else, so attention: their first
decision is among the wrong answers to the test question! Common phrases here are: Sorry,..
Oops,… I mean,.. Wait,.. Uh oh,…
Be sure to be able to identify intonation and common functions of speech, such as agreement,
apology, assumption, complaint, disagreement, interest, refusal, regret, request, suggestion, etc.
I appreciate your help, but… Polite refusal
So how about…? Why don’t we…? Suggestion
Can / could you…? Request
I’m sorry but / that… Regret
I couldn’t agree with you more. Strong agreement
Same here! Tell me about it! Agreement
Advice:
watch a movie / soap opera / cartoon in English right before the exam,
listen to radio programs with the American English accent such as at VOA Learning English, etc.
listen to your favorite / new songs in English (do you understand the lyrics?),
listen to as much of practice Listening tests as possible (not necessarily for TOEFL, try other exam
preparation materials as well), etc. Search youtube for practice tests!
Try to immerse yourself in the American accent. It should help you overcome the stress and the ‘shock’ of
having Listening as the very first part of the exam! Get your ears ready!
Sample:
Part A:
Correct answer – (C). Walking can only be a person who was hit by a car (otherwise the car was walking!)
Part B:
Last night, the director [A] finally wins [B] the award, after being nominated [C] more than [D] five times.
(A) director
(B) wins
(C) being nominated
(D) more than
Correct answer – (B). The sentence should go like this: …finally WON the award…
Tips:
Read ALL the choices even if you’re sure you already see the answer!
Look for the main verb of the sentence! Each sentence should have one.
Eliminate incorrect choices which are incomplete/ wrong structures such as “are go” instead of “are
going” or “to go” where definitely “goes” should be, etc. Remember, BE + -ING; HAVE + -ED; MODAL
+ VERB without ‘to’.
Words that contain similar sounds and spelling are usually wrong answers.
Good timing: Work on Part A for 10 minutes or less.
Advice:
Learn words that have been tested on previous TOEFLs / practice tests.
Learn word roots, prefixes, and suffixes. These should help you identify / build new words without
necessarily KNOWING them.
Study these usually problematic grammar topics:
5 passages of about 300-350 words, 8-12 questions each (choose one from 4 possible answers)

Be ready to grasp the idea of a complicated text without knowing the meaning of every word!
Sample:
1. Researchers in the field of animal behavior have long been interested in the
2. ways animals and insects communicate. The most recent findings show that
3. honeybees communicate mostly through "dances."
4. By performing certain dance routines, the workers let the other members know
5. of the location of a food source, its direction, and its distance. If the workers
6. spot pollen and nectar in the flowers near their hive, they do the circular dance.
7. On the other hand, when a food site is remote, they perform a figure-eight
8. waggle dance, in which the slow and fast tempo movements will inform the other
9. members of the distance to the food source. For instance, a slow waggle of the lower
10. part of the abdomen signifies a far-distance, demanding flight. Conversely, a rapid
11. waggle indicates a within-reach trip. Variations in the dance form exist among
12. different species.
13. The bee's orientation on the comb is a key directional cue for other bees. In the
14. absence of sun light on the comb, the bees waggle moving straight up. If the
15. sun's polarized light penetrates the hive, the bees can orient themselves
16. toward the direction of the sun's rays.
1. Which of the following best expresses the main idea of the passage?
(A) Communication among honeybees
(B) Insects' interaction with their environment
(C) The latest findings on sensorial and visual experimentation affecting bees
(D) A growing interest in general communication patterns between animals and insects
2. According to the passage, all of the following are signaled by the "dance routine" EXCEPT
(A) Location of the food supply
(B) Direction of the food source
(C) Existence of preying insects
AUBG Russia Coordinator Georgia Mulyukina ’14/’15 aubg.russia@gmail.com vk.com/aubgrussia
(D) Distance of the food
3. The passage suggests that a "waggle dance " is
(A) a semi-circular walk
(B) a side to side shaky movement
(C) a straight-line stroll
(D) an up and down slow dance
4. The word "conversely" in line 10 could best be replaced by which of the following?
(A) Despite
(B) Consequently
(C) On the other hand
(D) In spite of
Tips:
Even if you’re not familiar with the topic, don’t get scared! All the information you need is in the
text. The same applies to the unfamiliar and difficult words, moreover some of the technical terms
are included in the glossary at the end of the text!
Usually the main information is in the first and last paragraphs of the text. You can read these and
then skim (quickly look through) the rest of the text, then read the questions to know what to look
for and finally read the entire text.
Answer the vocabulary questions quickly, because you might already know the answer to them
without looking in the text (e.g. find a synonym, meaning…to a word mentioned in the text).
Also the last question of each text is on the main idea of the text (summary). Identify wrong
answers – ideas that are NOT in the text and minor points.
Be careful when following the idea of the text, pay attention to the personal pronouns (s/he, it,
they…) which connect the sentences. (example: blahblahblah researchers blahblahblah, and so they
blahblahblah Who they? Researchers).
To answer wh-questions (those which ask for specific info & start with question words such as
Who? What? When? Where? How? Which?), look for the relevant information, e.g. When…? ->
look for a date, Who…? -> look for a name, etc.
When you’re asked to insert a sentence, pay attention to its first word / phrase which usually refer
to the previous sentence, e.g. pronouns, order (First…, Finally…), contrast (On the contrary…),
addition (Furthermore…Moreover…), restatement (In other words…), example (For instance…).
Good timing: Spend about 20 minutes on each text, not more!

Американские школьники сдают экзамен Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) для поступления в
вузы. Тест оценивает школьные знания по трем аспектам – чтение Critical Reading, математика Math
и письмо Writing. Сдавать дополнительные предметные тесты (SAT Subject Tests) не нужно,
принимается формат SAT General Test.
A 25-minute essay
Six 25-minute sections (mathematics, critical reading and writing)
Two 20-minute sections (mathematics, critical reading and writing)
A 10-minute multiple-choice writing section
Версия SAT-On-Campus короче, чем обычный SAT: 3,5 часа (211 минут). Будет 9 чередующихся
секций – 6 по 25 минут, 2 по 20 минут и одна 10 минут. Перерывы – 2 по 5 минут и 1 – 1 минута.
Score: Each section of SAT (critical reading, mathematics and writing) will be scored on a 200- to
800-point scale, for a possible total of 2400. You’ll also get two “subscores” on the writing section: a
multiple-choice score from 20 to 80, and an essay score from 2 to 12. Raw score (all points for correct
answers minus a fraction of a point for wrong answers) is turned into a scaled score. This is where the
score of 200–800 points comes from, and it is done through a statistical process called “equating.” This
process makes it possible to compare your score with the scores of other students who took alternative
versions of the test, and to your own scores on previous tests.
Tips: Work on sentence completion questions first – they take less time than reading.
Sample:
1. Many formerly ____ peoples have moved into ____ settlements as urban areas have encroached upon their
land.
(A) roving. . vulnerable
(B) despondent. . stable
(C) transitory. . covert
(D) fervid . . enduring
(E) nomadic. . permanent
Correct answer – (E) – we need words that have opposite meanings here.
2. Duncan was a modest and cooperative worker; he demonstrated none of his colleague’s ____.
(A) geniality
(B) influence
(C) arrogance
(D) reluctance
(E) humility
Correct answer – (C) – we need an adjective which will make a contrast to ‘modest & cooperative’.

2. Which of the following best describes the relationship between sentences 13 and 14?
Math
You are allowed to use a calculator only during the Math section of SAT. BUT you CANNOT use your iPhone
or laptop or whatever device with a calculator option you have. ONLY a regular calculator without a computer-like
keyboard! Otherwise you will end up with no calculator at all Калькуляторы проверяют перед экзаменом!
Math Concepts
On SAT, four Math sections are covered
Numbers & Operations – about 20-25% of the questions: Задачки на процент (percent), среднюю
скорость (average speed), арифметическую/ геометрическую прогрессию (sequence).
Algebra & Functions – 35-40%: разложение на множители (factoring)*, функции (functions), порядок
числа, показатель степени (exponents)**, прямая / обратная пропорциональность (variation), модуль
(absolute value, см. видео).
Geometry & Measurement – 25-30%: свойства параллельных прямых (properties of parallel lines),
соотношения между углами/ сторонами (angle/ side relationships), площадь и периметр (area and
perimeter), система координат, графики (coordinate geometry)***.
Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability – 10-15%: среднее арифметическое (average, см. видео),
срединное значение (median), наиболее вероятное значение (mode), область значений (range),
вероятность (probability). Обратите внимание на эту часть, там есть несколько формул, которые
могут быть использованы в задачах! http://sat.collegeboard.org/practice/sat-practice-questions-math-
concepts-data-analysis?pageId=practiceMathConcepts
If you do not understand the question, you cannot complete the task, SO: FIRST OF ALL, go to this link and
check if you are familiar with the concepts (AND their names in English!). PLUS download The SAT

INTEGERS are целые числа, primes – простые числа (>1 и которые делятся только на себя и на 1), digits – от 0 до
9, odd/even numbers – нечетные/четные;
Angle – угол: right – прямой, corresponding – соответственные углы, interior – внутренние, alternate interior
angles – внутренние накрест лежащие углы, straight – угол 180°.
x2 + 2x = x (x + 2)
x2 – 1 = (x + 1) (x – 1)
x2 + 2x + 1 = (x + 1) (x + 1) = (x + 1)2
2x2 + 5x – 3 = (2x – 1) (x + 3)
Multiple Choice
Student-Produced Response
Attention:

Essay Sample
You have twenty-five minutes to write an essay on the topic assigned below. Think carefully about the issue
presented in the following excerpt and the assignment below.
Modern society values convenience. From disposable napkins to the personal computer, from fast-food restaurants
to cell phones, it seems that nearly everything we buy or use has been designed to maximize convenience.
Unfortunately, instead of saving time and energy and minimizing frustration, many of the so-called conveniences in
our lives turn out to be nuisances or have a negative impact on our health, the environment, or our emotional well-
being.
Assignment: Does society place too much value on convenience? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your
point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies,
experience, or observations.
Essay Tips:
Write ONLY in pencil! ПИШЕМ КАРАНДАШОМ!
Дополнительных черновиков нет – только 2 листа в Вашем Answer Sheet.
Полностью читаем задание. You should write ON the topic! Не льем воду и не пишем «от мамонтов».
Пишем своё! Если просят ‘give examples’, ‘support your position with reasoning and examples taken from
your life’ – даем конкретные примеры! Нужна именно Ваша «отсебятина», т.е. не боимся использовать
«I» - give examples that are meaningful TO YOU!
When you think what to write in your essay, ask yourself these questions: Would I agree / argue with the
author? What other examples / ideas come to my mind on the topic?
Check most recent essay topics (самые свежие темы сочинений ) and try to think what you would answer
ВНИМАНИЕ! Часть Essay не оценивается Приемной комиссией, но ВНИМАТЕЛЬНО читается for clarity, grammar
use, sentence structure.
