situations.
1. Get your act together (Meaning: you need to improve your behaviour/work)
This might be something your teacher says to you if you score badly in an exam or if you
misbehave in class. You can also use it to talk about people in general. For example, if your
friend is being mean or nasty for no reason, then you can tell them that they need to get their act
together.
2. Pull yourself together (Meaning: calm down)
This is a somewhat impolite way of telling someone that they are overreacting and that they need
to relax. Only use this if you think the person you are speaking to is getting upset over something
insignificant. If your friend tells you that their close relative has died, it is NOT the time to tell
them to pull themselves together.
3. I’m feeling under the weather (Meaning: I’m sick)
Yes, it’s longer and more difficult to say than ‘I’m sick’, but if your English teacher asks you
why you haven’t done your homework, he or she is more likely to forgive you if you say that
you were feeling under the weather. You may not have done your English homework, but your
teacher might be impressed that you know how to make eloquent excuses in a foreign language.
4. It’s a piece of cake (Meaning: it’s easy)
I don’t know why this means what it does, but sometimes you just have to accept that English
people use weird phrases.
5. Break a leg (Meaning: good luck!)
This is perhaps one of the most confusing yet well-known English idioms. If someone says this
to you, do not take offence or think they are threatening you; they are just wishing you luck. It is
most often used for people wishing success to actors and actresses before they perform on the
stage, but it can be said in other situations, too.
2. First Conditional
Про що говоримо?
Тут ми говоримо в головному реченні про подію, яка станеться, якщо буде виконана
умова з підрядного речення. Умовні речення першого типу в англійській відносяться до
майбутнього часу.
Структура
Частіше за все в головній частині умовного речення першого типу використовується
Future Simple, а в підрядному – Present Simple, незважаючи на те, що обидві частини
речення говорять про майбутнє. Справа в тому, що в англійській мові в підрядній частині
складних речень не використовується майбутній час:
If + Present Simple + Future Simple
If Tim doesn’t hurry up, he will miss the flight.
Tim will miss the flight if he doesn’t hurry up.
При зміні сполучника “if” на “when” у First Conditional, сенс речення зміниться –
приблизно так само, як і в українській. Речення з ‘when’ вказує на високу ймовірність
настання події:
When + Present Simple + Future Simple
If I see Ann, I will show her my business plan.
When I see Ann, I will show her my business plan.
Коли ми говоримо про дію в процесі, то тут, як і у випадку з Zero Conditional, може
використовуватися Present Continuous в підрядному реченні:
If + Present Continuous + Future Simple
If my father is sleeping, I will not wake him up.
У головній частині умовного рчечння першого типу замість майбутнього часу можуть
використовуватися модальні дієслова або дієслова в наказовому способі (без підмета). У
цьому випадку про те, що йдеться про майбутнє, ми здогадуємося за контекстом:
If + Present Simple / Continuous / Perfect + Modal Verb & Infinitive
If + Present Simple / Continuous / Perfect + Imperative Mood
If you see Ann, you should show her my business plan.
If you see Ann, show her my business plan.
If your father is sleeping, you should not wake him up.
If your father is sleeping, don’t wake him up.
3. Second Conditional
Про що говоримо?
В умовних речення другого типу ми говоримо про нереальні події в сьогоденні або про
події в майбутньому з дуже низькою ймовірністю, а також про (майже нездійсненні) мрії,
бажання, очікування. Українською це звучить приблизно так: «Якби ти дотримувався цієї
умови, ти (міг) би … (подія б наступила)».
Структура
У підрядній частині умовного речення такого типу використовується Past Simple, у
головній – Subjunctive Mood.
If + Past Simple + Subjunctive Mood
If I lived in Barcelona, I would have a good tan almost all year long.
If Natalie were more supportive, we would be best friends.
Крім цього, Second Conditional використовуються, щоб сказати, що б ми зробили або як би
поводилися на місці іншої людини. Це можна перекласти українською, як «Якби я був
тобою, я б…» або «На твоєму місці я б…»:
If I were you + I would
If I were you, I would travel more
Також замість умовного способу в головній частині умовного речення можна
використовувати модальні дієслова – could, should, might, must:
If + Past Simple + Modal Verb & Infinitive
If I were more organized, I could earn more money.
If you were adult, you must work every week including Summer.
4. Third Conditional
If + Past Perfect + would + have + V3
You would have passed the exam if you had studied harder.
До речі, це ще не найцікавіше! Іноді в підрядному реченні використовується зворотний
порядок слів, при чому значення речення не змінюється:
Had you studied harder, you would have passed the exam.
А іноді замість “would” e головній частині речення, як і у випадку Second Conditional,
використовуються модальні дієслова could, should, might, must:
If + Past Perfect + Modal Verb + have + V3
If you had wanted to pass the exam, you should have studied harder.
5. Mixed Conditional
В останньому типі, Mixed Conditional, використовується поєднання частин двох різних
типів умовних речень – другого і третього. Поєдняння бувають двох видів.
Зміст і структура 1: Second Conditional в головному реченні + Third Conditional в
підрядному
Тут ми говоримо про те, що могло б бути в сьогоденні або майбутньому, якби щось
сталося в минулому – тобто про нереальною ситуацію:
If + Past Perfect + Subjunctive Mood
If I had studied harder at college, I would earn more money now.
Зміст і структура 2: Third Conditional в головному реченні + Second Conditional в
підрядному
Тут ми говоримо про нереальною ситуацію в минулому, яка могла б статися, якби
дотримувалася умова, що відноситься до теперішнього часу (як правило, це умова – це
щось постійне, воно було актуальним у минулому та є актуальним зараз):
If + Past Simple + would + have + V3
If they were better players, their team would have scored more yesterday.
If you go out with your friends tonight, I will watch the football match on TV.
I will earn a lot of money if I get that job.
If she does not hurry, we will miss the bus.
Complete the Conditional Sentences with the correct form (Type I, II or III).
Form: if + Simple Present, will-Future
Example: If I had found her address, I would have sent her an invitation.
Exceptions
Sometimes Conditional Sentences Type I, II and III can also be used with other
tenses.
