Библейские имена собственные встречаются во многих языках мира,
носители которых связаны с христианской верой. Английский язык не
является исключением. Он, в отличие от других языков мира, испытал на
себе значительное влияние Библии [1, с. 73]. Библейские выражения и фразы
обогатили английскую фразеологию. Библейских фразеологических единиц в
английской фразеологии достаточно много. Приведем в примеры самые
популярные из них:
a doubting Thomas – Фома неверующий, человек, которого трудно
заставить поверить чему-либо, скептик [3, с. 263];
the brand (mark) of Cain – Каинова печать;
the curse of Cain – проклятие Каина;
Job`s comforter – горе-утешитель, утешитель, который лишь усугубляет
чье-либо горе;
Judas kiss – “поцелуй Иуды”, т. е. предательский поцелуй [3, с. 516];
Jacob’s ladder – лестница Иакова, крутая лестница, веревочная лестница
[3, с. 523];
a man ofblood – человек, проливший чью-либо кровь [3, с. 586];
as poor as Job – беден как Иов, нищий человек [3, с. 713];
the daughter of Jezebel – преступная, наглая женщина [3, с. 230];
the daughter of the horse-leech – ненасытная вымогательница,
кровопийца;
a man of Belial – безнравственный человек [3, с. 586];
have itching ears – быть любителем новостей, сплетен [3, с. 273];
a bull of Bashan – «васанский бык», человек с громовым голосом;
Benjamin’s mess– львиная доля, самая большая порция [3, с. 611].
Job’spost – человек, приносящий дурные новости;
hishornisexalted – он горд и счастлив;
be gathered to one’s fathers – отправиться к праотцам, скончаться;
can the leopard change his spot? – горбатого могила исправит [3, с. 543].
The Father of Lights – Создатель света, Бог [3, с. 314];
The father of lies – “отец лжи”, сатана;
Guardian angel – добрый гений, ангел-хранитель и fallen angel – падший
ангел, дьявол [3, с. 41]
Библейское выражение the king of terrors обозначает «смерть» [3, с.
516].
Cleanhands – «чистые руки», невиновность, честность. На основе
последнего примера возникла пословица a clean hand wants no washing –
честному человеку не нужно оправдываться.
Библейские имена прародителей человечества используются в
выражении when Adam delved and Eve span who was then a gentleman – когда
Адам пахал и пряла Ева, где родословное стояло древо? Это выражение было
лозунгом крестьянской войны 1381 г. В современном языке употребляется с
иронией и говорится человеку, хвастающемуся своим аристократическим
происхождением.

Archbish = archbishop.
Autem jet - A clergyman.
Baptized - ubjected to the rite of baptism; (colloquial) watered, diluted
(obsolete).
Bible-banger = Bible-pounder.
Bible-pounder - One who expounds or follows the Bible in a vigorous or
aggressive manner, esp. a clergyman.
Bible-thumper = Bible-pounder.
Big guy - God. Also more fully the big guy upstairs, the big guy in the sky.
Black pope - The Superior General of the Jesuits.
Blue-domer - A person who does not go to church, preferring to worship
outdoors beneath the ‘blue dome’ of heaven.
Camister - a clergyman, a minister.
Cardinal - originally slang. In early use: mulled red wine, esp. when made
with good-quality wine. Later more generally: any of various drinks made from
red.
Chapel - belonging to, or attending regularly, a chapel.
Choker - slang. A large neckerchief which was worn high round the throat.
white choker n. the white neckerchief worn in evening dress, by waiters, etc.
Christer - usually depreciative and sometimes considered offensive. A
Christian; esp. an overzealous, excessively pious, or sanctimonious Christian.
Christianable - exhibiting a Christian character; (also) befitting a Christian.
Christ-killer - a person who has (or is considered to have) acted or spoken
against Christ's teachings (obsolete); (in later use) slang (derogatory).
Christmassy - characteristic of or suitable for Christmas, esp. in being
festive, jolly, etc., or in being associated with or evocative of a traditional
Christmas.
Churchy - resembling that of a church; characteristic of or befitting a
church or church service.
Craw-thumper - one who beats his breast (at confession); applied
derisively to Roman Catholic devotees.
Creeping - transferred and figurative. Moving timidly or abjectly; acting
meanly or servilely; cringing. creeping Jesus.
Crimbo - Christmas.
Deacon - ecclesiastical. To make (someone) a deacon; to ordain to the
diaconate, to admit to deacon's orders.
Devil dodger - an extremely devout or sanctimonious person, esp. a
preacher.
Devil-dodging - extremely devout or sanctimonious; overzealous.
Dog - in oaths and asseverations: = god, n.
Doxy - opinion (esp. in religious or theological matters).
Dustman - slang. A preacher who uses violent action.
Fem sem - a female seminary; a women's college. Also: a woman or girl
who attends such a college.
Flying bishop - (originally in the U.K.) a bishop who is authorized to
minister to clergy and congregations outside his own diocese.
Fundie – a fundamentalist, esp. a religious fundamentalist.
God-botherer - depreciative (chiefly British, originally Military slang). A
member of the clergy; any religious-minded person, esp. a proselytizing Christian.
