Brevity is the soul of wit.
Proverb
Does there exist brief and simultaneously strong way of aesthetic self-expression? The way, which is
close to freeze-frame, used to be reflecting internal and external phenomena?.. This question has become
the fixed idea for every music creator in the world. This tendency is exposed in different spheres of
composition, having immensely grown in piano music. Although miniatures are limited by their length,
they conclude striking and diverse imaginative spheres inside themselves, i. e. depicted reality, excursions
to the past epochs, magic fantasies and mysterious legends, psychological aspirations, romantic
interpretation of the country traditional elements…
The genre of piano miniature is fed by its long fertile tradition, ascending to the programmatic
creation of the French clavecinists, preludes, fugues and dancing clavier pieces by J. S. Bach and sons,
graceful, laconic opuses by the Viennese classics, lyrical masterpieces from Mendelssohn’s “Songs
Without Words”, most eloquent pages of Schumann’s cycles, Chopin’s preludes, waltzes, mazurkas,
nocturnes and polonaises distinct for refined psychology and musical plasticity…
The development of piano miniature in Russia was stipulated by the local artistic environment having
been greedily absorbing European cultural experience, meanwhile turning such influences to absolutely
new achievements. Such paradox was depended on the Russian authors’ individualities, tightly connected
with their national artifacts. None of the Russian composers had ever neglected the genre of piano
miniature during the 19th century. The next cultural periods were also this genre’s flourishment. This
passion has been lasting up to nowadays. The genre of piano miniature has evidently overcome this long
brilliant historic path, retaining inexhaustible potential for its future evolution.
The true merit of the published collection is its adherence to historic landmarks of the piano miniature
in Russia. Musicians are given the chance to reveal the link between the classics and modern composers.
The pieces included to this collection are mainly rare sounding ones, though belonging to famous authors.
The majority of modern compositions (especially by the Petersburgian composers) are published for the
first time. It would be great if the Russian pianists paid more attention to the cultural stratum of piano
miniature, but not only to large-scaled constructions, which they mainly prefer. Hopefully, this collection
will quench this thirst for the new material.
Of course, the pearls published here are called forth to stop the show both among teachers and
executants, whose lofty objective and duty is to make them sound “like softest music to attending ears!”
