Никто не обнимет необъятного.

Идея написания этой книги возникла в июле 1998 г. Начало было по-
ложено в результате беседы автора в окрестностях Денисовой пещеры
(Горный Алтай) с Геннадием Федоровичем Барышниковым, одним из ве-
дущих российских и мировых археозоологов. Он сказал, что через десять
лет я должен написать книгу по геоархеологии. В начале 2000-х гг. архео-
лог Василий Николаевич Зенин упомянул о необходимости создать та-
кую сводку, где понятным для гуманитария – выпускника университе-
та – языком будут изложены основы применения естественных наук в
археологии, с практическими советами по отбору проб. Понимая, что
создание подобной книги потребует много времени и сил, я постепен-
но начал подбирать соответствующие материалы. Этому в значитель-
ной мере способствовали долговременные визиты в США в 1990–
2000-х гг., где в Университете Аризоны (г. Тусон, штат Аризона) к мо-
им услугам была прекрасная библиотека англоязычной литературы по
геоархеологии.
Мой первый контакт с геоархеологией состоялся в начале 1979 г.,
когда я познакомился с археологом Валерием Петровичем Степановым,
работавшим в Лаборатории новейших отложений и палеогеографии
плейстоцена географического факультета Московского государственного
университета. Я был студентом третьего курса кафедры общей физиче-
ской географии и палеогеографии того же факультета. Летом 1979 г. я
принял участие в изучении археологического памятника в бухте Мелко-
водной (Приморье) методами естественных наук. Мы с В.П. Степановым
начали сотрудничать в той области, которая сейчас называется геоархео-
логия; это выразилось в публикациях студенческого уровня (см., напри-
мер: Кузьмин, Степанов, 1982). Желание попробовать свои силы в геоар-
хеологии прочно укрепилось в моем сознании с конца 1970-х гг.

Причины вымирания мамонтов – извечный вопрос…
Почему вымерли мамонты? Изучение хронологии вымирания
мамонтов на основе прямого радиоуглеродного датирования их
останков позволило выяснить, что еще около 28–15 тыс. л. н.
они обитали во всей северной Евразии; стремительное сокра-
щение ареала мамонтов начинается около 12 тыс. л. н., и в ин-
тервале 9–12 тыс. л. н. они заселяли лишь северную часть Во-
сточной Европы и сибирское Заполярье, включая острова (Су-
лержицкий, 1995, 1997; Никольский, Питулько, 2013; Stuart et
al., 2002; Kuzmin, 2010; Puzachenko et al., in press). Так все же
почему вымерли мамонты? Наиболее вероятный ответ: повли-
яло изменение природных условий в конце плейстоцена (около
12–8 тыс. л. н.), создавшее неблагоприятную для мамонтов об-
становку (Лещинский, 2009; Nikolskiy et al., 2011; MacDonald et
al., 2012 и др.). Есть и другие объяснения: охота древнего чело-
века (Nogués-Bravo et al., 2008), нарушения ДНК (Rogers,
Slatkin, 2017), эпидемия (MacPhee, Marx, 1997), воздействие
инопланетного тела (Firestone et al., 2007), хотя некоторые из
них не выдерживают критики.

если для одного из них степень вероятности гораздо выше, чем для дру-
гого (см. пример для даты 3 500 35 л. н. с 2 сигма), это еще не озна-
чает, что интервал с более высокой вероятностью предпочтителен.

С дат: 1) 14С возраст (т.е., например: 3 500 35 л. н.); 2) индекс лабо-
ратории и номер даты (например, Ле-10432 или СОАН-3474); 3) вид да-
тированного материала (уголь, кость, нагар на керамике, раковины мол-
люсков и т.д.); 4) глубина залегания образца (от поверхности или услов-
ного уровня; в последнем случае полезно также указать высотное отно-
шение этого уровня к отметке земной поверхности); 5) название памят-
ника, его географические координаты (широта, долгота); 6) номер слоя,
раскопа, квадрата, откуда отобран материал; 7) культурная принадлеж-
ность датированного слоя или объекта; 8) имя автора археологического
исследования, время проведения раскопок. При датировании костного
материала принципиально важным является определение качества
материала (коллагена); в связи с этим необходимо указывать выход
коллагена из кости, а также значение соотношения стабильных изотопов
углерода (δ13С, см. § 4.1) и отношение содержания углерода к азоту

труднительно; в любом случае это будет в той или иной мере неточно.

Радиоуглеродное датирование Туринской плащаницы:
история без конца
Феномен Туринской плащаницы, как и ее 14С датирование,
можно сравнить разве что с детективом, принадлежащим перу
Агаты Кристи; в кратком изложении он выглядит так. Первые
сведения о льняном полотнище размером 4,3 1,1 м, которое
(как это провозглашалось) служило погребальным покрывалом
Иисуса Христа, относятся к середине XIV в. В 1353 г. влиятель-
ный французский рыцарь Жоффруа де Шарни (Geoffroi de
Charny) впервые показал плащаницу, на которой был виден
контур человеческого тела со скрещенными на животе руками,
в церкви городка Лири (Lirey) в области Шампань. Нужно пом-
нить, что непосредственно перед этим в Европе разразилась
одна из самых чудовищных эпидемий чумы (1347–1350 гг.), и
желание чуда среди заметно уменьшившегося населения кон-
тинента было как никогда сильным.

слоя 4 составил 306 56 тыс. лет; ранее методом треков была получена
дата для залегающего гораздо ниже слоя 10 Чжоукоудяня – 462 45 тыс.
лет. Согласно датированию с помощью метода 10Be/26Al, возраст памят-
ника существенно древнее, около 720 тыс. лет (Shen et al., 2009).
Другим примером использования метода треков в археологии яв-
ляется исследование стоянок нижнего палеолита в бассейне Бозё (также
Байсэ и Босэ) (Bose Basin) на юге Китая. Здесь артефакты (включая дву-
сторонние рубила) обнаружены, как это заявляют авторы, в отложениях
речных террас вместе с тектитами (Hou et al., 2000). На основании воз-
раста тектитов около 761–816 тыс. лет, полученного аргон–аргоновым
методом, авторы датируют памятники с рубилами этим интервалом –
около 803 тыс. л. н. (Hou et al., 2000. P. 1624). Необходимо заметить, что
возраст так называемых австралазийских микротектитов, широко развитых
в Юго-Восточной Азии, был установлен в конце 1960-х гг. методом треков
– 710 10 тыс. лет (см., например: Gentner et al., 1970).
Тем не менее факт совместного нахождения тектитов и арте-
фактов не может быть использован для доказательства возраста
последних, так как тектиты после своего образования могли пере-
отлагаться и попадать в более молодые осадки (см., например:
Koeberl et al., 2000). Таким образом, невозможно надежно определить
возраст археологических объектов подобным образом. Проблемы в да-
тировании памятников бассейна Бозё признаются и другими исследова-
телями (Деревянко, 2008. С. 16). Несмотря на очевидность ошибки кол-
лектива авторов под руководством Я. Хо (Hou et al., 2000), эта дата про-
должает тиражироваться (см., например: Хуан и др., 2005; Wang et al.,
2008). В последнее время опубликованы данные о том, что практически
все бифасиальные орудия, упомянутые в статье Хо и др. (Hou et al.,
2000) как собранные in situ, т.е. в плейстоценовых осадках, были на са-
мом деле найдены на поверхности (Gao, 2011). Все это не позволяет
принять древний (около 800 тыс. лет) возраст стоянок в бассейне Бозё.

наземной диетой величина 15N, равная +14,2‰ (Fu et al., 2014). Изо-
топные данные получены по коллагену костей человека из палеолитиче-
ских памятников Горного Алтая (пещеры Окладникова и Денисова)
(Добровольская, Тиунов, 2013; Dobrovolskaya, Tiunov, 2011); установле-
но, что пищей им служили в основном крупные травоядные животные.
Сходная информация имеется для находки кости палеолитического че-
ловека из стоянки Покровка (бассейн р. Енисея) (Akimova et al., 2010).
Основной тенденцией диеты позднего палеолита Евразии было исполь-
зование травоядных животных, с употреблением в некоторых случаях
значительного количества пресноводных или морских организмов
(Richards, 2009).
Необходимо привести примеры изучения палеодиеты на основе
стабильных изотопов для территории России, где эти работы начались
лишь в 1990-х гг. Одним из первых было исследование структуры пита-
ния неолитического населения Приморья (Йонеда и др., 1998), позво-
лившее установить преобладание морских ресурсов в жизнеобеспече-
нии носителей бойсманской культуры (Кузьмин, 2005а. С. 151–154;
Kuzmin, 2015; Kuzmin et al., 2002a) (рис. 4.1.4, значок «побережье» для
неолита Приморья). Для этого конкретного случая необходимо сделать
важное замечание. При реконструкции питания бойсманского населения
путем подсчета биомассы кухонных остатков были получены противо-
речивые выводы (Вострецов, Тоизуми, 1998). Так, утверждалось, что
максимальная пропорция морских животных составляет 79%, а назем-
ных организмов – 21% от диеты (Вострецов, Тоизуми, 1998. С. 333), од-
нако далее по тексту следует, что в хозяйстве носителей бойсманской
культуры преобладала охота на наземных млекопитающих (Вострецов,
Тоизуми, 1998. С. 349). Найденную на памятнике Бойсмана-1 един-
ственную кость серого кита авторы посчитали как пищевой ресурс це-
лого животного, содержащего 37,3 млн килокалорий: «…мясо кита бы-
ло съедено» (Вострецов, Тоизуми, 1998. С. 345), но затем объявляется,
что «…кит не был съеден полностью» (Вострецов, 1998. С. 384). Ос-
новной вывод таков: доля морской пищи составляла 8,5–17% от общего
состава ресурсов (Вострецов, 1998. С. 384). Противоречивость точки
зрения Ю.В. Вострецова очевидна, а сделанные им выводы не являются
достоверными. Согласно грубой оценке, доля морской фауны в составе
диеты бойсманцев составляла не менее 70–80% (Йонеда и др., 1998;
Кузьмин, 2002; Kuzmin et al., 2002a).
Что касается диеты других групп древнего населения юга Дальне-
го Востока России, имеющиеся на сегодня данные говорят о наземном

2014). Основной посылкой этого направления является концепция ар-
хеологических биомаркеров (archaeological biomarkers) (Evershed,
1993, 2008). В России примеры таких работ пока единичны (Крейг и др.,
2015; Cassidy, 2007); в связи с этим ниже дается достаточно подробное
изложение изучения липидов в керамике биомолекулярными методами.
Липиды включают в себя ряд органических соединений, плохо рас-
творимых в воде; для их экстракции из растений, тканей животных и кера-
мического теста пользуются растворителями типа хлороформа, метанола и
эфира. Основным компонентом липидов, которые изучаются в геоар-
хеологии, являются жирные (карбоновые) кислоты (fatty (carboxylic)
acids), входящие в состав триацилглицерина (triacyglycerol); также иссле-
дуются стероиды (steroids), воск (wax) и терпены (terpens) (см. § 5.5).
Жирные кислоты состоят из углеводородных цепей (последова-
тельности соединенных между собой атомов углерода), содержащих от
4 до 36 углеродных атомов; наиболее часто в растениях и животных
встречаются цепи с 12–24 атомами углерода. Самыми короткими явля-
ются жирные кислоты молока и других молочных продуктов (dairy
products), поэтому они растворимы в воде; по мере удлинения углеводо-
родных цепей степень растворимости снижается. Соединения, имею-
щие хотя бы одну двойную связь (ковалентную связь двух атомов в мо-
лекуле посредством двух общих электронных пар), называются нена-
сыщенными (unsaturated), а не имеющие таковых – насыщенными
(saturated).
В природе жирные кислоты обычно входят в состав триацилглице-
ринов, имеющих более длинные молекулярные цепи. Жир (fat) и масло
(oil) являются разновидностями триацилглицеринов. Жиры при комнат-
ной температуре находятся в твердом состоянии, так как состоят в основ-
ном из насыщенных жирных кислот; так, в говяжьем жире присутствует
около 55% насыщенных соединений. Маслá при комнатной температуре
имеют жидкую консистенцию, так как составляющие их триацилглице-
рины содержат в основном ненасыщенные жирные кислоты (в оливковом
масле их доля составляет около 80%). Масла обычны в таких организмах,
как растения и рыбы. Растения и животные используют жиры и масла для
запасания энергии; они концентрируются в жировых клетках растений и
формируют жировую ткань (adipose tissue), а в растениях находятся в се-
менах. При метаболизме (обмене веществ; от греч. metabole – перемена)
поступление энергии от разложения триацилглицеринов более чем вдвое
больше такового для углеводов и белков.
