Thomas Moore –
The Irish Bard
Of Love and Freedom
Translated into Russian,
preface and notes by A. Pokidov
Moscow
2006

РАЗДЕЛ I
IRISH MELODIES
Remember the glories of Brien the brave,
Tho’ the days of the hero are o’er;
Tho’ lost to Mononia and cold in the grave,
He returns to Kinkora no more.
That star of the field, which so often hath poured
Its beam on the battle, is set; Зашла, источая свой свет;
But enough of its glory remains on each sword,
To light us to victory yet.
Mononia! when Nature embellished the tint
Of thy fields, and thy mountains so fair,
Did she ever intend that a tyrant should print
The footstep of slavery there?
No! Freedom, whose smile we shall never resign,
Go, tell our invaders, the Danes,
That ’tis sweeter to bleed for an age at thy shrine,
Than to sleep but a moment in chains.
Forget not our wounded companions, who stood
In the day of distress by our side;
While the moss of the valley grew red with their blood,
They stirred not, but conquered and died.
That sun which now blesses our arms with his light,
Saw them fall upon Ossory’s plain; –
Oh! let him not blush, when he leaves us to-night,
To find that they fell there in vain.

[3] ERIN! ТНE TEAR AND THE SMILE IN THINE ЭРИН!
EYES
Erin, the tear and the smile in thine eyes,
Blend like the rainbow that hangs in thy skies!
Shining through sorrow’s stream,
Saddening through pleasure’s beam,
Thy suns with doubtful gleam,
Weep while they rise.
Erin! thy silent tear never shall cease,
Erin! thy languid smile ne’er shall increase,
Till, like the rainbow’s light,
Thy various tints unite,
And form in heaven’s sight
One arch of peace!
But the night-dew that falls, though in silence it weeps,
Shall brighten with verdure the grave where he sleeps; Могилу укутает зеленью трав;
And the tear that we shed, though in secret it rolls,
Shall long keep his memory green in our souls.
[5] WHEN HE, WHO ADORES THEE
When he, who adores thee, has left but the name
Of his fault and his sorrows behind,
Oh! say wilt thou weep, when they darken the fame
Of a life that for thee was resigned?
Yes, weep, and however my foes may condemn,
Thy tears shall efface their decree;
For Heaven can witness, though guilty to them,
I have been but too faithful to thee.
With thee were the dreams of my earliest love;
Every thought of my reason was thine; Верь, любовь моя не истощится;
In my last humble prayer to the Spirit above,
Thy name shall be mingled with mine.
21
Oh! blest are the lovers and friends who shall live
The days of thy glory to see;
But the next dearest blessing that Heaven can give
Is the pride of thus dying for thee.
[6] OH! THINK NOT MY SPIRITS ARE
ALWAYS AS LIGHT
Oh! think not my spirits are always as light,
And as free from a pang as they seem to you now; И так безмятежен, как вечером этим;
Nor expect that the heart-beaming smile of to-night
Will return with to-morrow to brighten my brow.
No! – life is a waste of wearisome hours,
Which seldom the rose of enjoyment adorns;
And the heart that is soonest awake to the flowers,
Is always the first to be touched by the thorns.
But send round the bowl, and be happy awhile –
May we never meet worse, in our pilgrimage here,
Than the tear that enjoyment may gild with a smile,
And the smile that compassion can turn to a tear.
The thread of our life would be dark, Heaven knows!
If it were not with friendship and love intertwined; Когда б не любви и не дружбы участье;
And I care not how soon I may sink to repose,
When these blessings shall cease to be dear to my mind.
But they who have loved the fondest, the purest,
Too often have wept o’er the dream they believed;
And the heart that has slumbered in friendship securest,
Is happy indeed if”t was never deceived.
But send round the bowl; while a relic of truth
Is in man or in woman, this prayer shall be mine, –
That the sunshine of love may illumine our youth,
And the moonlight of friendship console our decline.
Though the last glimpse of Erin with sorrow I see,
Yet wherever thou art shall seem Erin to me; Повсюду, где ты, будет милая Эрин;
In exile thy bosom shall still be my home,
And thine eyes make my climate wherever we roam.
To the gloom of some desert or cold rocky shore,
Where the eye of the stranger can haunt us no more,
22
I will fly with my Coulin, and think the rough wind
Less rude than the foes we leave frowning behind.
And I’ll gaze on thy gold hair as graceful it wreathes,
And hang o’er thy soft harp, as wildly it breathes;
Nor dread that the cold-hearted Saxon will tear
One chord from that harp, or one lock from that hair.
[8] RICH AND RARE WERE THE GEMS SHE WORE
Rich and rare were the gems she wore,
And a bright gold ring on her wand she bore; И кольцо золотое сверкало на жезле походном;
But oh! her beauty was far beyond
Her sparkling gems, or snow-white wand.
“Lady! dost thou not fear to stray, “Леди!
“So lone and lovely through this bleak way?
“Are Erin’s sons so good or so cold, Так хороши или холодны Эрин сыны,
“As not to be tempted by woman or gold?” –
“Sir Knight! I feel not the least alarm, “Нет, Рыцарь!
“No son of Erin will offer me harm: – мне беда,
“For though they love woman and golden store, Никто в моей Эрин не нанесёт мне вреда;
“Sir Knight! they love honour and virtue more!”
On she went, and her maiden smile
In safety lighted her round the green isle;
And blest for ever is she who relied
Upon Erin’s honour, and Erin’s pride.
[9] AS A BEAM O’ER THE FACE OF THE
WATERS MAY GLOW
As a beam o’er the face of the waters may glow
While the tide runs in darkness and coldness below,
So the cheek may be tinged with a warm sunny smile,
Though the cold heart to ruin runs darkly the while.
One fatal remembrance, one sorrow that throws
Its bleak shade alike o’er our joys and our woes.
To which life nothing darker or brighter can bring
For which joy has no balm and affliction no sting –
23
Oh! this thought in the midst of enjoyment will stay, О!
Like a dead, leafless branch in the summer’s Словно мёртвая ветка под солнцем весной;
The beams of the warm sun play round it in vain,
It may smile in his light, but it blooms not again.
How dear to me the hour when daylight dies,
And sunbeams melt along the silent sea,
For then sweet dreams of other days arise,
And memory breathes her vesper sigh to thee.
And, as I watch the line of light, that plays
Along the smooth wave toward the burning west,
I long to tread that golden path of rays,
And think ’twould lead to some bright isle of rest.
[11] OH! HAD WE SOME BRIGHT LITTLE ISLE
OF OUR OWN
Oh! had we some bright little isle of our own,
In a blue summer ocean, far off and alone,
Where a leaf never dies in the still blooming bowers,
And the bee banquets on through a whole year живых,
of flowers; Где пчела круглый год веселится, пируя на них;
Where the sun loves to pause
With so fond a delay,
That the night only draws
A thin veil o’er the day; Под тонкой вуалью спит день;
Where simply to feel that we breathe, that we live,
Is worth the best joy that life elsewhere can give.
There, with souls ever ardent and pure as the clime,
We should love, as they loved in the first golden time; Что знали мы лишь в золотые земли времена;
The glow of the sunshine, the balm of the air,
Would steal to our hearts, and make all summer there.
With affection as free
From decline as the bowers,
And, with hope, like the bee,
Living always on flowers,
Our life should resemble a long day of light,
And our death come on, holy and calm as the night.
24
[12] COME, SEND ROUND THE WINE
Come, send round the wine, and leave points of belief
Оставим пустым резонерам и всем простакам;
To simpleton sages, and reasoning fools;
This moment’s a flower too fair and brief,
To be wither’d and stain’d by the dust of the schools.
Your glass may be purple, and mine may be blue,
But, while they are fill’d from the same bright bowl,
The fool, who would quarrel for difference of hue,
Deserves not the comfort they shed o’er the soul.
Shall I ask the brave soldier, who fights by my side
In the cause of mankind, if our creeds agree?
Shall I give up the friend I have valued and tried,
If he kneel not before the same altar with me?
From the heretic girl of my soul should I fly,
To seek somewhere else a more orthodox kiss?
No, perish the hearts, and the laws that try
Truth, valor, or love, by a standard like this!
[13] BELIEVE ME, IF ALL THOSE ENDEARING
YOUNG CHARMS
Believe me, if all those endearing young charms,
Which I gaze on so fondly to-day,
Were to change by to-morrow, and fleet in my arms,
Like fairy-gifts fading away,
Thou wouldst still be adored, as this moment thou art.
Let thy loveliness fade as it will,
And around the dear ruin each wish of my heart
Would entwine itself verdantly still.
It is not while beauty and youth are thine own,
And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear,
That the fervour and faith of a soul can be known,
To which time will but make thee more dear; Что пред ними бессильны все сроки;
No, the heart that has truly loved never forgets,
But as truly loves on to the close,
As the sun-flower turns on her god, when he sets,
The same look which she turned when he rose.
25
Like the bright lamp, that shone in Kildare’s holy fane,
And burn’d through long ages of darkness and storm,
Is the heart that sorrows have frowned on in vain,
Whose spirit outlives them, unfading and warm.
Erin, oh Erin, thus bright through the tears
Of a lone night of bondage, thy spirit appears.
The nations have fallen, and thou still art young,
Thy sun is but rising, when others are set; Их солнце угасло, а ты – пред зарёй;
And though slavery’s cloud o’er thy morning hath hung,
The full noon of freedom shall beam round thee yet.
Erin, oh Erin, though long in the shade,
Thy star will shine out when the proudest shall fade.
Unchilled by the rain, and unwaked by the wind,
The lily lies sleeping through winter’s cold hour,
Till Spring’s light touch her fetters unbind,
And daylight and liberty bless the young flower.
Thus Erin, oh Erin, thy winter is past,
And the hope that lived through it shall blossom at last.
Like the gale, that sighs along
Beds of oriental flowers,
Is the grateful breath of song,
That once was heard in happier hours;
Filled with balm, the gale sighs on,
Though the flowers have sunk in death; Хотя цветы мертвы давно;
So, when pleasure’s dream is gone,
Its memory lives in Music’s breath.
Oh! the days are gone, when Beauty bright
My heart’s chain wove;
When my dream of life, from morn till night,
Was love, still love.
New hope may bloom,
And days may come,
Of milder, calmer beam,
But there’s nothing half so sweet in life
As love’s young dream;
No, there’s nothing half so sweet in life
As love’s young dream.
Though the bard to purer fame may soar,
When wild youth’s past;
Though he win the wise, who frowned before,
To smile at last; Он увлечёт, –
He’ll never meet
A joy so sweet,
In all his noon of fame,
As when first he sung to woman’s ear
His soul-felt flame,
And, at every close, she blushed to hear
The one lov’d name.
No, – that hallowed form is ne’er forgot
Which first love traced;
Still it lingering haunts the greenest spot
On memory’s waste.
As soon as shed;
’Тwas morning’s winged dream; И твой блаженный свет
’Twas a light, that ne’er can shine again
On life’s dull stream:
Oh! ’twas light that ne’er can shine again
On life’s dull stream.
Weep on, weep on, your hour is past;
Your dreams of pride are o’er;
The fatal chain is round you cast,
And you are men no more.
28
In vain the hero’s heart hath bled;
The sage’s tongue hath warned in vain; – Герой напрасно пролил кровь;
Oh, Freedom! once thy flame hath fled,
It never lights again.
[20] I SAW THY FORM IN YOUTHFUL PRIME
I saw thy form in youthful prime,
Nor thought that pale decay
Would steal before the steps of Time,
And waste its bloom away, Mary!
Yet still thy features wore that light,
Which fleets not with the breath;
And life ne’er looked more truly bright
Than in thy smile of death, Mary!
As streams that run o’er golden mines,
Yet humbly, calmly glide,
Nor seem to know the wealth that shines
Within their gentle tide, Mary!
So veiled beneath the simplest guise,
Thy radiant genius shone,
And that, which charmed all other eyes,
Seemed worthless in thy own, Mary!
If souls could always dwell above,
30
Thou ne’er hadst left that sphere;
Or could we keep the souls we love,
We ne’er had lost thee here, Mary!
Though many a gifted mind we meet,
Though fairest forms we see,
To live with them is far less sweet,
Than to remember thee, Mary!
She sings the wild song of her dear native plains,
Every note which he loved awaking; –
Ah! little they think who delight in her strains,
How the heart of the Minstrel is breaking.
He had lived for his love, for his country he died,
They were all that to life had entwined him; Каждый вздох – только ей и Отчизне;
Nor soon shall the tears of his country be dried,
Nor long will his love stay behind him.
Oh! make her a grave where the sunbeams rest,
When they promise a glorious morrow;
They’ll shine o’er her sleep, like a smile from the West,
From her own loved island of sorrow.
By the red cloud that hung over Conor’s dark dwelling,
When Ulad’s three champions lay sleeping in gore – В миг смерти трёх Ольстера верных борцов;
By the billows of war, which so often, high swelling,
Have wafted these heroes to victory’s shore –
31
We swear to revenge them! – no joy shall be tasted,
The harp shall be silent, the maiden unwed,
Our halls shall be mute, and our fields shall lie wasted,
Till vengeance is wreaked on the murderer’s head.
Yes, monarch! though sweet are our home recollections,
Though sweet are the tears that from tenderness fall;
Though sweet are our friendships, our hopes,
our affections, знакома,
Revenge on a tyrant is sweetest of all!
At the mid hour of night, when stars are weeping, I fly
To the lone vale we loved, when life shone warm
in thine eye; подобен лучу;
And I think oft, if spirits can steal from the regions of air,
To revisit past scenes of delight, thou wilt
come to me there,
And tell me our love is remembered, even in the sky.
Then I sing the wild song ’twas once such pleasure to hear!
When our voices commingling breathed, like one,
And, as Echo far off through the vale my sad orison rolls,
I think, oh my love! ’tis thy voice from the Kingdom
Faintly answering still the notes that once were so dear.
Now all the world is sleeping, love,
But the Sage, his star-watch keeping, love, Лишь за звездой Мудрец следит;
And I, whose star,
More glorious far,
Is the eye from that casement peeping, love,
Then awake! – till rise of sun, my dear,
The Sage’s glass we’ll shun, my dear, И Мудреца я проведу;
Or, in watching the flight
Of bodies of light,
He might happen to take thee for one, my dear.
33
The Minstrel fell! – but the foeman’s chain
Could not bring his proud soul under; Свободолюбец юный;
The harp he loved ne’er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;
And said, “No chains shall sully thee, “Не испытаешь грязь цепей,
“Thou soul of love and bravery!
“Thy songs were made for the pure and free, И песням вольности твоей
“They shall never sound in slavery.”
Oh! what was love made for, if ’tis not the same
Through joy and through torment, through
glory and shame?
I know not, I ask not, if guilt’s in that heart,
I but know that I love thee, whatever thou art.
Thou hast called me thy Angel in moments of bliss,
And thy Angel I’ll be, mid the horrors of this, –
Through the furnace, unshrinking, thy steps to pursue,
And shield thee, and save thee, – or perish there too!
Dear Harp of my Country! in darkness I found thee,
The cold chain of silence had hung o’er thee long, Душила твой голос средь мрака и бед;
When proudly, my own Island Harp, I unbound thee,
And gave all thy chords to light, freedom, and song!
The warm lay of love and the light note of gladness
Have waken’d thy fondest, thy liveliest thrill; И каждая – трепетом напоена;
But, so oft hast thou echo’d the deep sigh of sadness,
That ev’n in thy mirth it will steal from thee still.
Dear Harp of my Country! farewell to thy numbers,
This sweet wreath of song is the last we shall twine! Из песен твоих не сплету я венка;
Go, sleep with the sunshine of Fame on thy slumbers,
Till touch’d by some hand less unworthy than mine; Пока тебя тронет достойней рука;
If the pulse of the patriot, soldier, or lover,
Have throbb’d at our lay, ’tis thy glory alone;
I was but as the wind, passing heedlessly over,
And all the wild sweetness I waked was thy own.
Wert thou all that I wish thee, great, glorious, and free,
First flower of the earth, and first gem of the sea,
I might hail thee with prouder, with happier brow,
But oh! could I love thee more deeply than now?
36
No, thy chains as they rankle, thy blood as it runs,
But make thee more painfully dear to thy sons –
Whose hearts, like the young of the desert-bird’s nest,
Drink love in each life-drop that flows from thy breast.
[32] WHENE’ER I SEE THOSE SMILING EYES
Whene’er I see those smiling eyes,
So full of hope, and joy, and light,
As if no cloud could ever rise,
To dim a heaven so purely bright –
I sigh to think how soon that brow
In grief may lose its every ray,
And that light heart, so joyous now,
Almost forget it once was gay.
For time will come with all its blights,
The ruin’d hope, the friend unkind,
And love, that leaves, where’er it lights,
A chill’d or burning heart behind: – Пожар сердечный или лёд;
While youth, that now like snow appears,
Ere sullied by the dark’ning rain,
When once ’tis touch’d by sorrow’s tears
Can never shine so bright again.
But ’tis past – and, though blazon’d in story
The name of our Victor may be,
38
Far dearer the grave or the prison,
Illumed by one patriot name,
Than the trophies of all, who have risen
On Liberty’s ruins to fame.
Sail on, sail on, – through endless space –
Through calm – through tempest – stop no more: Благословив и штиль, и шквал;
The stormiest sea’s a resting place
To him who leaves such hearts on shore.
Or – if some desert land we meet,
Where never yet false-hearted men
Profaned a world, that else were sweet, –
Then rest thee, bark, but not till then.
Of all the bright haunts, where daylight leaves
Its lingering smile on golden eves,
Fair Lake, thou’rt dearest to me;
For when the last April sun grows dim,
Thy Naiads prepare his steed for him
Who dwells, bright Lake, in thee.
Of all the proud steeds, that ever bore
Young plumed Chiefs on sea or shore,
White Steed, most joy to thee; Белый Конь, он – дороже тебе всех коней;
Who still, with the first young glance of spring,
From under that glorious lake dost bring
My love, my chief, to me.
While, white as the sail some bark unfurls,
When newly launched, thy long mane curls,
Fair Steed, as white and free; Красуясь волненьем своим;
And spirits, from all the lake’s deep bowers,
Glide o’er the blue wave scattering flowers,
Around my love and thee.
Of all the sweet deaths that maidens die,
Whose lovers beneath the cold wave lie,
Most sweet that death will be,
Which, under the next May evening’s light,
When thou and thy steed are lost to sight,
Dear love, I’ll die for thee.
40
Yet Love hath echoes truer far,
And far more sweet,
Than e’er beneath the moonlight’s star,
Of horn or lute, or soft guitar,
The songs repeat.
’Tis when the sigh, in youth sincere,
And only then, – Невинных лет,
The sigh that’s breath’d for one to hear,
Is by that one, that only dear,
Breathed back again!
There, while the myrtle’s withering boughs
Their lifeless leaves around us shed,
We’ll brim the bowl to broken vows,
To friends long lost, the changed, the dead. За всех, утраченных давно;
Or, while some blighted laurel waves
Its branches o’er the dreary spot,
We’ll drink to those neglected graves,
Where valor sleeps, unnamed, forgot.
41
The dawning of morn, the daylight’s sinking,
The night’s long hours still find me thinking
Of thee, thee, only thee.
When friends are met, and goblets crowned,
And smiles are near, that once enchanted,
Unreached by all that sunshine round,
My soul, like some dark spot, is haunted
By thee, thee, only thee.
Whatever in fame’s high path could waken
My spirit once, is now forsaken
For thее, thee, only thee.
Like shores, by which some headlong bark
To th’ocean hurries, resting never,
Life’s scenes go by me, bright or dark,
I know not, heed not, hastening ever
To thee, thee, only thee.
I have not a joy but of thy bringing,
And pain itself seems sweet when springing
For thее, thee, only thee.
Like spells, that naught on earth can break,
Till lips, that know the charm, have spoken,
This heart, howe’er the world may wake
Its grief, its scorn, can but be broken
By thee, thee, only thee.
He turn’d, but, lo, like a startled bird,
That spirit fled! – and the youth but heard
Sweet music, such as marks the flight
Of some bird of song, from the Mountain Sprite.
One night, still haunted by that bright look,
The boy, bewilder’d, his pencil took,
And, guided only by memory’s light,
Drew the once-seen form of the Mountain Sprite.
“Oh thou, who lovest the shadow,” cried “О ты, очарованной тенью такою!” –
A voice, low whisp’ring by his side,
“Now turn and see,” – here the youth’s delight “Оглянись же!”
Seal’d the rosy lips of the Mountain Sprite.
43
“Of all the Spirits of land and sea,” “Все духи земли и под синей волною”, –
Then rapt he murmur’d, “there’s none like thee, В восторге он вскрикнул, – “бледны пред тобою;
“And oft, oh oft, may thy foot thus light Ты чаще ходи, становясь всё милее,
“In this lonely bower, sweet Mountain Sprite!”
They know not my heart, who believe there can be
One stain of this earth in its feelings for thee; Что на чувстве к тебе печать есть земная;
Who think, while I see thee in beauty’s young hour,
As pure as the morning’s first dew on the flower,
I could harm what I love, – as the sun’s wanton ray
But smiles on the dew-drop to waste it away.
No – beaming with light as those young features are,
There’s a light round thy heart which is lovelier far:
It is not that cheek – ’tis the soul dawning clear
Through its innocent blush makes thy beauty so dear; Что невинности прелесть сдружила с тобой;
As the sky, we look up to, though glorious and fair,
Is looked up to the more, because Heaven lies there!
Let those, who brook the chain
Of Saxon or of Dane,
Ignobly by their firesides stay;
One sigh to home be given,
One heartfelt prayer to heaven,
Then, for Erin and her cause, boy,
hurra! hurra! hurra!
Then, for Erin and her cause, hurra!
Though fairer forms around us throng,
Their smiles to others all belong, Улыбки их другим даны;
And want that charm which dwells alone
Round those the fond heart calls its own. Что в нас душа своим зовёт;
Where, where the sunny brow?
The long-known voice – where are they now?
Thus ask I still, nor ask in vain,
The silence answers all too plain.
Those eyes themselves from out the grave,
As wake again one bliss they gave.
I’ve a secret to tell thee, but hush! not here, – Я тайну тебе прошептать хочу,
Oh! not where the world its vigil keeps: Но только не здесь, где звуки слышны;
I’ll seek, to whisper it in thine ear,
Some shore where the Spirit of Silence sleeps; В том месте, где спит даже Бог Тишины;
Where summer’s wave unmurmuring dies,
Nor fay can hear the fountain’s gush;
Where, if but a note her night-bird sighs,
The rose saith, chidingly, “Hush, sweet, hush!”
There, amid the deep silence of that hour,
When stars can be heard in ocean dip,
Thyself shall, under some rosy bower,
Sit mute, with thy finger on thy lip:
Like him, the boy, who born among
The flowers that on the Nile-stream blush,
Sits ever thus, – his only song
To earth and heaven, “Hush, all, hush!”
[48] THERE ARE SOUNDS OF MIRTH
There are sounds of mirth in the night-air ringing,
And lamps from every casement shown;
While voices blithe within are singing,
That seem to say “Come”, in every tone.
Ah! once how light, in Life’s young season,
My heart had leap’d at that sweet lay; Само летело сердце в плен;
Nor paused to ask of graybeard Reason
Should I the syren call obey.
And, see – the lamps still livelier glitter,
The syren lips more fondly sound; Нежней сирен уста звучат;
No, seek, ye nymphs, some victim fitter “Ищите ж, нимфы, жертв слабее,
To sink in your rosy bondage bound.
Shall a bard, whom not the world in arms
Could bend to tyranny’s rude control,
Thus quail, at sight of woman’s charms,
And yield to a smile his freeborn soul?
47
Thus sung the sage, while, slyly stealing,
The nymphs their fetters around him cast,
And, – their laughing eyes, the while, concealing, –
Led Freedom’s Bard their slave at last.
For the Poet’s heart, still prone to loving,
Was like that rock of the Druid race,
Which the gentlest touch at once set moving, –
But all earth’s power couldn’t cast from its base.
Through grief and through danger thy smile
hath cheered my way,
Till hope seemed to bud from each thorn that Надежда живая на терниях злых расцветала;
The darker our fortune, the brighter
our pure love burned, Ни позора, ни страха не ведали мы до конца;
Till shame into glory, till fear into zeal was turned;
Yes, slave as I was, in thy arms my spirit felt free,
And blest even the sorrows that made me
more dear to thee.
Thy rival was honoured, while thou wert
wronged and scorned, ж попирали пятой,
Thy crown was of briers, while gold her brows
adorned; золотой;
She wooed me to temples, while thou lay’st
Her friends were all masters, while thine, alas!
were slaves; лишь рабы да рабы;
Yet cold in the earth, at thy feet, I would rather be,
Than wed what I loved not,
or turn one thought from thee.
They slander thee sorely, who say thy vows are frail –
Hadst thou been a false one, thy cheek had
looked less pale. и щёки;
They say, too, so long thou hast worn those
That deep in thy heart they have printed
their servile stains – О, грязь клеветы!
Oh! foul is the slander, – no chain could that soul subdue –
Where shineth thy spirit, there liberty shineth too!
48
Oh, could we do with this world of ours
As thou dost with thy garden bowers,
Reject the weeds and keep the flowers,
What a heaven on earth we’d make it!
So bright a dwelling should be our own,
So warranted free from sigh or frown,
That angels soon would be coming down,
By the week or month to take it.
Like those gay flies that wing through air,
And in themselves a lustre bear,
A stock of light, still ready there,
Whenever they wish to use it;
So, in this world I’d make for thee,
Our hearts should all like fire-flies be,
And the flash of wit or poesy
Break forth whenever we choose it.
While ev’ry joy that glads our sphere
Hath still some shadow hov’ring near,
In this new world of ours, my dear,
Such shadows will all be omitted: – О нет, дорогая, не быть им с нами;
Unless they’re like that graceful one,
Which, when thou’rt dancing in the sun,
Still near thee, leaves a charm upon
Each spot where it hath flitted!

NATIONAL AIRS
“Oh! never,” she cried, “could I think of enshrining “О нет! –
“An image whose looks are so joyless and dim; – Промолвила дева, – а тот вон прелестный божок,
“But yon little god, upon roses reclining, Что к розам простёр свои шаловливые руки,
“We’ll make, if you please, Sir, a Friendship of him.”
So the bargain was struck; with the little god laden
She joyfully flew to her shrine in the grove: “Такое я видел, и вижу такое я вновь.
“Farewell,” said the sculptor, “you’re not the first maiden Прощай!
“Who came but for Friendship and took away Love.”
[4] OH, COME TO ME WHEN DAYLIGHT SETS
Oh, come to me when daylight sets;
Sweet! then come to me,
When smoothly go our gondolets
O’er the moonlight sea. Бег наших гондолет;
When Mirth’s awake, and Love begins,
Beneath that glancing ray,
With sound of lutes and mandolins,
To steal young hearts away.
Then, come to me when daylight sets;
Sweet! then come to me,
When smoothly go our gondolets
O’er the moonlight sea.
63
Oh, then’s the hour for those who love,
Sweet! like thee and me;
When all’s so calm below, above,
In heav’n and o’er the sea.
When maidens sing sweet barcarolles
And Echo sings again
So sweet, that all with ears and souls
Should love and listen then.
So, come to me when daylight sets;
Sweet! then come to me,
When smoothly go our gondolets
O’er the moonlight sea.
[5] OH, NO – NOT EVEN WHEN FIRST WE LOVED
Oh, no – not ev’n when first we loved,
Wert thou as dear as now thou art; Ты не была так дорога, как ныне;
Thy beauty then my senses moved,
But now thy virtues bind my heart.
What was but Passion’s sigh before,
Has since been turned to Reason’s vow;
And, though I then might love thee more,
Trust me, I love thee better now.
If sorrow e’er this calm should break,
May even thy tears pass off so lightly,
Like spring-showers, they’ll only make
The smiles that follow shine more brightly.
May Time who sheds his blight o’er all
And daily dooms some joy to death
O’er thee let years so gently fall,
They shall not crash one flower beneath.
As half in shade and half in sun
This world along its path advances,
May that side the sun’s upon
Be all that e’er shall meet thy glances!
[7] WHEN FIRST THAT SMILE
When first that smile, like sunshine, bless’d my sight,
Oh what a vision then came o’er me!
Long years of love, of calm and pure delight,
Seemed in that smile to pass before me.
Ne’er did the peasant dream of summer skies,
Of golden fruit and harvests springing,
With fonder hope than I of those sweet eyes,
And of the joy their light was bringing.
Where now are all those fondly-promised hours?
Ah! woman’s faith is like her brightness –
Fading as fast as rainbows or day-flowers,
Or aught that’s known for grace and lightness. Как лилий грациозный глянец;
Short as the Persian’s prayer, at close of day,
Should be each vow of Love’s repeating;
Quick let him worship Beauty’s precious ray –
Even while he kneels, that ray is fleeting!
When sets the sun on Afric’s shore,
That instant all is night;
And so should life at once be o’er,
When Love withdraws his light; –
Nor, like our northern day, gleam on
Through twilight’s dim delay,
The cold remains of lustre gone,
Of fire long pass’d away.
Breathe on, breathe on, thou languid strain,
Henceforth be all my own;
Though thou art oft so full of pain
Few hearts can bear thy tone. Что гнёт невыносим;
Yet oft thou’rt sweet, as if thy sigh,
The breath that Pleasure’s wings
Gave out, when last they wantoned by,
Were still upon thy strings.
[16] DO NOT SAY THAT LIFE IS WANING
Do not say that life is waning,
Or that hope’s sweet day is set;
While I’ve thee and love remaining,
Life is in th’horizon yet.
Do not think those charms are flying,
Though thy roses fade and fall; От цветов твоих ланит;
Beauty hath a grace undying,
Which in thee survives them all.
And when I called thee by names the dearest
That love could fancy, the fondest, nearest, –
“My life, my only life!” among the rest; “О, жизнь моя!” – имя такое ведь есть для любви;
In those sweet accents that still enthrall me,
Thou saidst, “Ah!” wherefore thy life thus call me?
“Thy soul, thy soul’s the name I love best; Ты лучше душою своею меня назови,
“For life soon passes, – but how blest to be Ведь скоро пройдёт наша жизнь, и как сладко мне быть
“That Soul which never, never parts from thee!”
70
Who could have thought the smile he wore
When first we met would fade away?
Or that a chill would e’er come o’er
Those eyes so bright through many a day?
Hear me but once, etc.
There may the child, whose love lay deepest,
Dearest of all, come while thou sleepest;
Still as she was – no charm forgot –
No lustre lost that life had given; Дарованным ещё в земном полёте;
Or, if changed, but changed to what
Thou’lt find her yet in Heaven!
Dim lies the way to death before me,
Cold winds of Time blow round my brow; И ветры времени свистят;
Sunshine of youth! that once fell o’er me,
Where is your warmth, your glory now?
’Tis not that then no pain could sting me;
’Tis not that now no joys remain; И радости я не лишён;
Oh, ’tis that life no more can bring me
One joy so sweet as that worst pain.
Though kindly still those eyes behold me,
The smile is gone, which once they wore В них нет заветного тепла;
72
Though fondly still those arms enfold me,
’Tis not the same – thou lov’st no more.
Long, long, in sorrow, too deep for repining,
Gloomy, but tranquil, this bosom hath lain;
And joy coming now, like a sudden light shining
O’er eyelids long darkened, would bring me but pain.
Fly then, ye visions that Hope would shed o’er me; Летите прочь, надежды привиденья;
Lost to the future, my sole chance of rest
Now lies not in dreaming of bliss that’s before me,
But, ah – in forgetting how once I was blest.
Long, like that dim cloud, I’ve hung around thee,
Darkening thy prospects, sadd’ning thy brow; Туманя твою беспечальную бровь;
With gay heart, Theresa, and bright cheek I found thee;
Oh, think how changed, love, how changed art thou now!
73
But here I free thee; like one awaking
From fearful slumber, thou break’st the spell; Стряхнув, наконец, злые чары сгоняй;
’Tis over – the moon, too, her bondage is breaking –
Past are the dark clouds; Theresa, farewell!
“Breathe not, oh breathe not, ye winds, о’er her cheeks; “Не вейте, ветра, над щеками её.
“If mute thus she charms me, I’m lost when she speaks”.
Thus sing I, while, awaking,
She murmurs words that seem
As if her lips were taking
Farewell of some sweet dream.
Breathe not, oh breathe not, etc,
Far safer for Love ’tis to wake and to weep,
As he used in his prime, than go smiling to sleep;
For death on his slumber, cold death follows fast,
While the love that is wakeful lives on to the last.
And though, as Time gathers his clouds o’er our head,
A shade somewhat darker o’er life they may spread, Над жизнью витает коварнее мрак;
Transparent, at least, be the shadow they cast,
So that Love’s soften’d light may shine through to the last.
Though the wings of Love will brightly play,
When first he comes to woo thee,
There’s a chance that he may fly away
As fast as he flies to thee.
While Friendship, though on foot she come,
No flights of fancy trying,
Will, therefore, oft be found at home,
When Love abroad is flying.
Which shall it be? How shall I woo?
Dear one, choose between the two.
Phillis, when she might have caught me,
All the Spring look’d coy and shy,
Yet herself in Autumn sought me,
When the flowers were all gone by.
Ah, too late; – she found her lover
Calm and free beneath his vine,
Drinking to the Spring-time over
In his best autumnal wine.
What would the rose with all her pride be worth,
Were there no sun to call her brightness forth?
Maidens, unloved, like flowers in darkness thrown,
Wait but that light which comes from Love alone.
Fair as thy charms in yonder glass appear,
Trust not their bloom, they’ll fade from year to year: С годами чары обратятся в прах;
Wouldst thou they still should shine as first they shone,
Go, fix thy mirror in Love’s eyes alone.
Time, while I spoke, with his wings resting o’er me,
Heard me say, “where are those visions, oh where?”
And pointing his wand to the sunset before me,
Said, with a voice like the hollow wind, “There”.
Fondly I look’d, when the wizard had spoken,
And there, mid the dim shining ruins of day,
Saw, by their light, like a talisman broken,
The last golden fragments of hope melt away.
77
[34] WHEN THOU SHALT WANDER
When thou shalt wander by that sweet light
We used to gaze on so many an eve,
When love was new and hope was bright,
Ere I could doubt or thou deceive –
Oh, then, remembering how swift went by
Those hours of transport, even thou may’st sigh.
Yes, proud one! even thy heart may own Признайся, гордая!
That love like ours was far too sweet
To be, like summer garments, thrown
Aside, when pass’d the summer’s heat;
And wish in vain to know again
Such days, such nights, as bless’d thee then.
Oh! ’tis then that he thou hast slighted
Would come to cheer thee, when all seem’d o’er; Придёт тебя согреть на жизненной руине;
Then the truant, lost and blighted,
Would to his bosom be taken once more.
79
Like that dear bird we both can remember,
Who left us while summer shone round,
But, when chilled by bleak December,
On our threshold a welcome still found.
[36] LIKE ONE WHO, DOOMED
Like one who, doomed o’er distant seas
His weary path to measure,
When home at length, with favouring breeze,
He brings the far-sought treasure;
His ship, in sight of shore, goes down,
That shore to which he hasted; Куда спешил он рьяно;
And all the wealth he thought his own
Is o’er the waters wasted.
Like him, this heart, through many a track
Of toil and sorrow straying,
One hope alone brought fondly back,
Its toil and grief repaying.
Like him, alas, I see that ray
Of hope before me perish, Возврата нет надежде;
And one dark minute sweep away
What years were given to cherish.
That moon, which hung o’er your parting, so splendid,
Often will shine again, bright as she then did – И луч не раз твои осветит плечи,
But, never more will the beam she saw burn
In those happy eyes, at your meeting, return.
Go, then, and dream, etc.

[39] SAY, WHAT SHALL BE OUR SPORT TO-DAY?
Say, what shall be our sport to-day?
There’s nothing on earth, in sea, or air,
Too bright, too high, too wild, too gay
For spirits like mine to dare!
’Tis like the returning bloom
Of those days, alas, gone by,
When I loved, each hour – I scarce knew whom –
And was bless’d – I scarce knew why.
Ay – those were days when life had wings, Да, были дни, крылатые, как птицы;
And flew, oh, flew so wild a height
That, like the lark which sunward springs,
’Twas giddy with too much light.
And, though of some plumes bereft,
With that sun, too, nearly set,
I’ve enough of light and wing still left
For a few gay soarings yet.
Those joyous hours are past away;
And many a heart, that then was gay,
Within the tomb now darkly dwells,
And hears no more those evening bells.
Rose of the Garden, how unlike thy doom!
Destined for others, not thyself, to bloom; Цвести другим, а не самой себе;
Cull’d ere thy beauty lives through half its day;
A moment cherish’d, and then cast away;
Rose of the Garden! such is woman’s lot, –
Worshipp’d, while blooming – when she fades,
forgot.
When first our scanty years are told,
It seems like pastime to grow old;
And, as Youth counts the shining links,
That Time around him binds so fast,
Pleased with the task, he little thinks
How hard that chain will press at last.
Vain was the man, and false as vain,
Who said – “were he ordain’d to run Изрекший: “Если бы начать,
His long career of life again,
He would do all that he had done.” –
Ah, ’tis not thus the voice, that dwells
In sober birth-days, speaks to me;
Far otherwise – of time it tells,
Lavish’d unwisely, carelessly; В пустой растрачен суете;
Of counsel mock’d; of talents, made
Haply for high and pure designs,
But oft, like Israel’s incense, laid
Upon unholy, earthly shrines: Во храмах источён мирских;
93
I give thee all – I can no more – Несу тебе мой скромный дар,
Though poor the off’ring be;
My heart and lute are all the store
That I can bring to thee.
A lute whose gentle song reveals
The soul of love full well; Любви моей полна;
And, better far, a heart that feels
Much more than lute could tell.
Though love and song may fail, alas!
To keep life’s clouds away,
At least ’twill make them lighter pass
Or gild them if they stay.
And ev’n if Care, at moments, flings
A discord o’er life’s happy strain,
Let love but gently touch the strings,
’Twill all be sweet again!
94
For royal men, howe’er they frown,
If on their fronts they bear not
That noblest gem that decks a crown,
The People’s Love – WE CARE NOT.
For slavish men, who bend beneath
A despot yoke, yet dare not Смирились оробело,
Pronounce the will, whose very breath
Would rend its links – WE CARE NOT.
For martial men, who on their sword,
Howe’er it conquers, wear not Гуляет ошалело,
The pledges of a soldier’s word,
Redeem’d and pure – WE CARE NOT.
For legal men, who plead for wrong,
And, though to lies they swear not, Скрывающих умело,
And hardly better than the throng
Of those who do – WE CARE NOT.
For wealthy men, who keep their mines
In darkness hid, and share not Век губит дух и тело;
The paltry ore with him who pines
In honest want – WE CARE NOT.
For prudent men, who hold the power
Of Love aloof, and bare not
Their hearts in any guardless hour
To Beauty’s shaft – WE CARE NOT.
95
If, in the race we are destined to run, love,
They who have light hearts the happiest be, Лелеют сердец легковесный покой;
Then, happier still must be they who have none, love, Счастливее те, у кого их не стало;
And that will be my case when mine is with thee.
It matters not where I may now be a rover,
I care not how many bright eyes I may see; Пусть очи ярчайшие смотрят с мольбой;
Should Venus herself come and ask me to love her,
I’d tell her I couldn’t – my heart is with thee.
And there let it lie, growing fonder and fonder –
For, even should Fortune turn truant to me,
Why, let her go – I’ve a treasure beyond her, Пускай!
As long as my heart’s out at int’rest with thee!
97
When on the skies at midnight thou gazest,
A lustre so pure thy features then wear,
That, when to some star that bright eye thou raisest,
We feel ’tis thy home thou’rt looking for there.
But, when the word for the gay dance is given,
So buoyant thy spirit, so heartfelt thy mirth,
Oh then we exclaim, “Ne’er leave earth for heaven, И мы восклицаем: “Не надо на небо,
But linger still here, to make heaven of earth”.
The Wisard show’d him his Lady bright,
Where lone and pale in her bow’r she lay;
“True-hearted maid,” said the happy Knight, “О Дева бледная!
“She’s thinking of one, who is far away.” –
But lo! a page, with looks of joy,
Brings tidings to the Lady’s ear; –
“’Tis,” said the Knight, “the same bright boy, “О бог!
“Who used to guide me to my dear.” –
The Lady now, from her fav’rite tree,
Hath, smiling, pluck’d a rosy flow’r; –
“Such,” he exclaim’d, “was the gift that she “О, по утрам она такой
“Each morning sent me from that bow’r!” –
She gives her page the blooming rose,
With looks that say, “Like lightning, fly!” –
“Thus,” thought the Knight, “she soothes her woes, А Рыцарь думал: “Так она
“By fancying, still, her true-love nigh.” –
99
But the page returns, and – oh, what a sight,
For trusting lover’s eyes to see!
Leads to that bow’r another Knight,
As young and, alas, as loved as he!
“Such,” quoth the Youth, “is Woman’s love!”
Then, darting forth, with furious bound,
Dash’d at the Mirror his iron glove,
And strew’d it all in fragments round.
Such ills would never have come to pass,
Had he ne’er sought that fatal view; Без жажды роковых картин;
The Wisard would still have kept his Glass
And the Knight still thought his Lady true.
[14] WHEN ON THE LIP THE SIGH DELAYS
When on the lip the sigh delays,
As if ’twould linger there for ever;
When eyes would give the world to gaze,
Yet still look down, and venture never; Всегда потупленных стыдливо;
When, though with fairest nymphs we rove,
There’s one we dream of more than any – А мысль – о той, что всех желанней,
If all this is not real love,
’Tis something wondrous like it, Fanny!
100
When Hope foretells the brightest, best,
Though Reason on the darkest reckons;
When Passion drives us to the west,
Though Prudence to the eastward beckons; Благоразумье же – к востоку;
When all turns round, below, above,
And our own heads the most of any – А головы – всего отрадней,
If this is not stark, staring love,
Then you and I are sages, Fanny.
[16] THE HALCYON HANGS O’ER OCEAN
The halcyon hangs o’er ocean,
The sea-lark skims the brine; Вон чайка на волне;
This bright world’s all in motion,
No heart seems sad but mine.
Oh, take thou this young rose, and let her life be
Prolong’d by the breath she will borrow from thee;
For, while o’er her bosom thy soft notes shall thrill,
She’ll think the sweet night-bird is courting her still.
Tell her, oh, tell her, the tree that, in going,
Beside the green arbour she playfully set,
As lovely as ever is blushing and blowing,
And not a bright leaflet has fall’n from it yet.
So while away from that arbour forsaken,
The maiden is wandering, still let her be
As true as the lute, that no sighing can waken,
And blooming for ever, unchanged as the tree!
102
By those dark eyes, where light is ever playing,
Where Love, in depth of shadow, holds his throne,
And by those lips, which give whate’er thou’rt saying,
Or grave or gay, a music of its own,
A music far beyond all minstrel’s playing,
I love but thee – I love but thee!
By that fair brow, where Innocence reposes,
As pure as moonlight sleeping upon snow,
And by that cheek, whose fleeting blush discloses
A hue too bright to bless this world below,
And only fit to dwell on Eden’s roses,
I love but thee – I love but thee!
Thus let us leave the bower of love,
Where we have loiter’d long in bliss; Где долго были мы в бреду;
And you may down that pathway rove,
While I shall take my way through this.
103
So droops the maid whose lover hath forsaken her, – Так никнет дева, брошенная милым, –
Thrown from his arms, as lone and lost as thou; Без рук любимых, как цветок ты отцвела;
In vain the smiles of all
Like sunbeams round her fall; Все их усилья зыбки;
The only smile that could from death awaken her,
That smile, alas! is gone to others now.
Thus man, the sport of bliss and care,
Rises on time’s eventful sea;
And, having swelled a moment there,
Thus melts into eternity!
104
And then, at night, how sweet to say
“’Tis late, my love!” and chide delay, “Зачем так поздно!”
Though still the western clouds are bright; Хоть запад всё ещё цветёт;
Oh! Happy, too, the silent press, О!
The eloquence of mute caress,
With those we love exchanged at night!
For, weak as I am with temptation to grapple,
The world would have doubly to rue thee:
Like Adam, I’d gladly take from thee the apple,
Like Paris, at once give it to thee.
So pure, so precious shall the memory be,
Bequeath’d, in dying, to our souls by thee –
So shall the love we bore thee, cherish’d warm
Within our souls through grief, and pain, and strife,
Be, like Elisha’s cruise, a holy charm,
Wherewith to “heal the waters” of this life!
106
Where is she? Where the blooming bough
That once my life’s sole lustre made?
Torn off by death, ’tis with’ring now,
And all its flow’rs in dust are laid.
Should chilling winds and rains come on,
We’ll raise our awning ’gainst the show’r;
Sit closer till the storm is gone,
And, smiling, wait a sunnier hour. С улыбкой солнца ждать;
And if that sunnier hour should shine,
We’ll know its brightness cannot stay, –
But happy, while ’tis thine and mine,
Complain not when it fades away.
Fleet then on, my merry steed,
Bound, my steed, o’er hill and dale; –
What can match a lover’s speed?
See, ’tis daylight, breaking pale!
Brightly hath the northern star
Lit us from yon radiant skies;
But, behold, how brighter far
Yonder shine my lady’s eyes!
With light thus round, within, above,
With naught to wake one sigh,
Except the wish, that all we love
Were at this moment nigh, –
It seems as if life’s brilliant sun
Had stopp’d in full career,
To make this hour its brightest one,
And rest in radiance here.
When the flowers of life’s sweet garden fade,
If but one bright leaf remain,
Of the many that once its glory made,
It is not for us to complain.
But thus to meet and thus to wake
In all Love’s early bliss; Мы вспомним любви блаженную явь;
Oh, Time all other gifts may take,
So he but leaves us this!
Then let joy alone be remember’d now,
Let our sorrows go sleep awhile; Пусть печали наши поспят;
Or if thought’s dark cloud come o’er thy brow,
Let Love light it up with his smile!
Still thou fliest, and still I woo thee,
Lovely phantom, – all in vain; О милый призрак, за тобой;
Restless ever, my thoughts pursue thee,
Fleeting ever, thou mock’st their pain.
Such doom, of old, that youth betided,
Who woo’d, he thought, some angel’s charms,
But found a cloud that from him glided, –
As thou dost from these outstretch’d arms.
Scarce I’ve said, “How fair thou shinest”,
Ere thy light hath vanish’d by; Твой свет исчезнет без следа;
And ’tis when thou look’st divinest
Thou art still more sure to fly.
113
Now, had this needle turn’d its eye
To some gay reticule’s construction,
It ne’er had stray’d from duty’s tie,
Nor felt the magnet’s sly seduction.
Thus, girls, would you keep quiet hearts,
Your snowy fingers must be nimble; А паче – берегите нервы;
The safest shield against the darts
Of Cupid, is Minerva’s thimble.
’Twas eve’s soft hour, and bright, above,
The star of Beauty beam’d,
While lull’d by light so full of love,
In slumber thus I dream’d –
Methought, at that sweet hour,
A nymph came o’er the lea,
Who, gath’ring many a flow’r,
Thus said and sung to me; – Сказав мне нараспев:
“Should any ask what Leila loves, “Что Лейла любит?
“Say thou, To wreathe her hair Всё для волос она
“With flow’rets cull’d from glens and groves, Плетёт веночки из цветов,
“Is Leila’s only care.
“While thus in quest of flow’rets rare, Пока влечёт такая цель
“O’er hill and dale I roam, И я всегда в пути,
“My sister, Rachel, far more fair, Моя красавица Рашель
“Sits lone and mute at home.
“Before her glass untiring, Молчит, одна весь день-деньской
“With thoughts that never stray, И зеркало при ней,
“Her own bright eyes admiring, Весь день любуется собой,
“She sits the live-long day; Иное чуждо ей;
“While I! – oh, seldom even a look А я!
“Of self salutes my eye; – Цветам я сберегу;
“My only glass, the limpid brook, Одно мне зеркало – ручей,
“That shines and passes by.”
[45] ODE VII
The women tell me every day
That all my bloom has pass’d away.
“Behold,” the pretty wantons cry,
Глянь хорошенько и вздохни;
“Behold this mirror with a sigh;
“The locks upon thy brow are few,
“And, like the rest, they’re withering too!”
Whether decline has thinn’d my hair,
I’m sure I neither know nor care;
But this I know, and this I feel,
As onward to the tomb I steal,
That still as death approaches nearer,
The joys of life are sweeter, dearer,
And had I but an hour to live,
That little hour to bliss I’d give.
116
Then fare thee well, seductive dream,
That mad’st me follow Glory’s theme; И Славу воспою не я;
For thou my lyre, and thou my heart,
Shall never more in spirit part;
And all that one has felt so well
The other shall as sweetly tell!
To man she gave, in that proud hour,
The book of intellectual power.
Then, what, oh woman, what, for thee,
Was left in Nature’s treasury?
She gave thee beauty – mightier far
Than all the pomp and power of war.
Nor steel, nor fire itself hath power
Like woman in her conquering hour.
Be thou but fair, mankind adore thee,
Smile, and a world is weak before thee!
“LALLA ROOKH”
2 fragments from the second poem
“Paradise and The Peri”
Поэма “Paradise And The Peri” (2-я вставная поэма) является своего рода фи-

“Though sunny the Lake of cool CASHMERE Пусть солнечны озёр Кашмира воды,
“With its plane-tree Isle reflected clear, А про платаны острова слагать бы оды,
“And sweetly the founts of that Valley fall; Пусть нет ручьёв долины той свежей,
“Though bright are the waters of SING-SU-HAY Пусть блещут все озёра Синг-Су-Хэй
“And the golden floods that thitherward stray, И золотых потоков не пересчитать,
“Yet – oh, ’tis only the Blest can say Но лишь Благословенному дано сказать,
“How the waters of Heaven outshine them all!
“Go, wing thy flight from star to star, Лети, полёт направив от звезды к звезде,
“From world to luminous world as far От мира к миру лучезарному, – везде,
“As the universe spreads its flaming wall: Где достигает пламя всех вселенских вех,
“Take all the pleasures of all the spheres Познай блаженство этих вечных сфер,
“And multiply each through endless years И умножай их без конца и мер, –
“One minute of Heaven is worth them all!”
The glorious Angel who was keeping
The gates of Light beheld her weeping, Ворота Света, все её рыданья уловил;
And as he nearer drew and listen’d
To her sad song, a tear-drop glisten’d
Within his eyelids, like the spray
From Eden’s fountain, when it lies
On the blue flow’r which – Bramins say –
Blooms nowhere but in Paradise.
“Nymph of a fair but erring line!”
Gently he said – “One hope is thine.
“’Tis written in the Book of Fate, Судеб Скрижаль таит твой жребий тоже:
‘The Peri yet may be forgiv’n

Land of the Sun! what foot invades
Thy Pagods and thy pillar’d shades –
Thy cavern shrines and Idol stones,
Thy Monarch and their thousand Thrones?
’Tis He of GAZNA – fierce in wrath
He comes and INDIA’S diadems
Lie scatter’d in his ruinous path. –
His bloodhounds he adorns with gems,
Torn from the violated necks
Of many a young and loved Sultana;
Maidens, within their pure Zenana,
Priests in the very fane he slaughters,
And chokes up with the glittering wrecks Жрецов он убивал во храмах их;
Of golden shrines the sacred waters!
Downward the PERI turns her gaze,
And, through the war-field’s bloody haze
Beholds a youthful warrior stand,
Alone beside his native river, –
The red blade broken in his hand Один он у реки родной;
And the last arrow in his quiver.
“Live,” said the Conqu’ror, “live to share “Живи, – сказал тиран ему, –
“’The trophies and the crowns I bear!”
“Be this,” she cried, as she winged her flight, “Пусть”, – закричала Пери, – “капля эта –
“My welcome gift at the Gates of Light. Мой дар перед Вратами Света;
“Though foul are the drops that oft distil Хоть зачастую кровь в бою мерзка,
“On the field of warfare, blood like this, Но кровь священна только та,
“For Liberty shed, so holy is, Что за свободу пролита,
“It would not stain the purest rill, Она не загрязнит и ручейка,
“That sparkles among the Bowers of Bliss!”

до Джона Китса и его современников;

Tyutchev’s poetry into English. On the 20th of April, 2004, the same channel realized
over the open ether a broadcast on the issuance of a volume of translations of
E. Spenser’s sonnets. On the 18th June of 2005, through the channel of “Radio Sophia”
a meeting with S. Yurov was organized prompted by the issuance of a volume of
translations from John Keats, during which for more than an hour were discussed the
problems of poetic translations. In June of 2008, the radio station “The Voice of
Russia” invited A. Pokidov to the broadcast concerning his activity in the sphere of
translations, in particular about his translations of fairy tales and verses by
V. Mayakovsky, A. Bartó, S. Mikhalkov, T. Bokova.
In June of 2009, through the TV-channel “Culture” there was realized a broad-
cast “Khudsovet” dedicated to A. Pokidov’s activity in the translations sphere.
In 2006, the author enlisted the support and the benevolent attention of the
former Ambassador of Great Britain in Russia sir Anthony Brenton who uttered a
wish to write an introductory article to the future publications with the attestation of
the importanсe and character of his work as a translator.
In 2007, A. Pokidov received a positive appreciation of his work from Her Majes-
ty The Queen of Britain Elizabeth II to whom the volume of translations from
F. I. Tyutchev had been sent.
In 2012, close work began with the Fund “Russian World”, headed by
Vyacheslav Nikonov. Appearing on the Internet-radio “Russian World” in the series
“Lyric Russia” broadcasts are given during which the author relates in a duet with
Irina Sushkova, about the personages from series, and read aloud the translations
(with the originals).
