and sighing.

der at the Mouse’s tail; “but why do you call it sad?”…
“You are not attending!” – said the Mouse to Alice, severely. “What
are you thinking of?”
“I beg your pardon,” – said Alice very humbly: “you had got to the
fifth bend, I think?”
“I had not” cried the Mouse very angrily.
“A not!” said Alice, always ready to make herself useful,… “Oh, do
let me help to undo it!”
Allegro

Some dogs are doggos, some are puppers, and others may even
be pupperinos. There are corgos and clouds, fluffers and floofs, woof-
ers and boofers. The chunky ones are thicc, and the thin ones are long
bois.
Are you picking up what I’m putting down? If not, you’re prob-
ably not fluent in DoggoLingo, a language trend that’s been gaining
steam on the Internet in the past few years. The language most often
accompanies a picture or a video of a dog and has spread to all major
forms of social media. It might even change the way we talk out loud
to our beloved canines.
DoggoLingo, sometimes referred to as doggo-speak, “seems to be
quite lexical, there are a lot of distinctive words that are used,” says
57
Internet linguist Gretchen McCulloch. “It’s cutesier than others, too.
Doggo, woofer, pupper, pupperino, fluffer – those have all got an extra
suffix on the end to make them cuter.”
Dogs’ wholesomeness could be why groups like Dogspotting and
accounts like WeRateDogs have become so popular. They’re an es-
cape from a news cycle that’s become terrifying and depressing for
so many.
This dog-centric positivity has driven the popularity of Doggo-
Lingo to new heights. Even Merriam-Webster is aware of terms like
doggo and pupper. Though they have a long way to go before they’re
eligible for dictionary-entry – they need to be used in published, ed-
ited work over an extended period of time – they’re definitely candi-
dates.
“I personally like both,” says Emily Brewster, an associate edi-
tor at Merriam-Webster, Inc. “I think it’s great when people play with
their language, and the new ‘doggo’ is way more fun than the unrelat-
ed adverb meaning ‘in hiding.’ “
McCulloch thinks some DoggoLingo terms have staying power,
too: “I wouldn’t be surprised if we see ‘doggo’ around in 50 years and
people never realize it came from a meme”1.

The word Zen is the Japanese form of the Chinese word Ch’an,
which is the Chinese form of the Indian word Dhyana, meaning a
particular kind of meditation. The Buddha, 2,500 years ago in In-
dia, taught the importance of this kind of meditation in achieving
enlightenment. A thousand later, we are told, Bodhidharma, an In-
dian missionary, took this message to China. There, followers of Lao
Tzu assimilated it to their way of life, called Taoism. Their attitude of
going along with the nature of things, the Tao, harmonized with the
non-self-assertive, none raving acceptance of life, as taught original-
ly in India by the Buddha and then in China by Bodhidharma. This
school of Buddhism was called Ch’an. The great arts of the Sung dy-
nasty in China (960–1280) were created primarily by Ch’an-trained
people.
When monks brought Ch’an to Japan in the twelfth century, it de-
veloped even more rapidly and influenced the culture even more pro-
foundly than it had in China. Called Zen by its converts, it shaped not
only the religion of the people but also the orientation of the creative
workers in sculpture, painting, architecture, landscape gardening,
house furnishing, theatre – even bushido, the code of the warrior, and
the arts of swordsmanship and archery.

Упражнение 9
Переведите текст.
Classical tags, formerly the sine qua non of the well-honed man-
darin memorandum (L. A thing to be remembered), have been banned
by the Treasury, writes Sonia Purnell.
Whitehall’s most powerful ministry, once dominated by Ox-
bridge classicists, has outlawed Latin and Greek to avoid discrimi-
nating against those educated at less traditional establishments who
may not be familiar with them.
77
The ban has shocked the old school. “Good heavens!” said one
former senior official. “I never thought that any of us used the ancient
language that often. It wasn’t as if we often had the opportunity in the
Treasury to cry Eureka! anyway.”
Treasury officials are being told that notes and minutes must be
written in the “clear and concise language of journalists”.
Under the Treasury’s modernist permanent secretary, Sir Ter-
ence Burns – Houghton-le-Spring grammar school and Manchester
University – mutatis mutandis has been discarded in favour of “with
necessary changes”.
Even the favourite saying of the Eton and Oxford-educated for-
mer Cabinet secretary, Lord Armstrong – bis dat qui cito dat (he who
delivers speedily, delivers best) – has been outlawed.
“It never had much effect in the Treasury anyway,” said one offi-
cial. “But it won’t affect the thing the Treasury really cares about, be-
cause there has never been a Latin phrase for cash limits or defence
estimates.”
The ban is part of a Treasury campaign, following exhortations to
Home Office mandarins to write like “tabloid hacks”, to stop discrim-
ination against minority groups. One official recently broke this rule
by writing against a submission: “Not bad – for a Chelsea fan.”
In more educated times, Punch jokingly reported that Sir Charles
Napier declared his conquest of Sind in 1843 by sending the message
“peccavi” (“I have sinned”) to Lord Ellenborough.
The golf writer Henry Longhurst was inspired by the glamorous
Gloria Minoprio to create another classic pun. For years the Italian
player had failed to survive the first round of the British women’s
championship. When she finally reached the second day, hewrote:
“Sic transit Gloria Tuesday1”.

istics of some particular language. As we might expect, students of
society have found that the facts about language can illuminate their
understanding – after all, it is hard to think of any characteristic of a
society which is as distinctive as its language, or as important for its
functioning. ‘The study of society in relation to language (the con-
verse of our definition of sociolinguistics) defines what is generally
called THE SOCIOLOGY OF LANGUAGE.
The difference between sociolinguistics and the sociology of lan-
guage is very much one of emphasis to whether the investigator is
more interested in language or society, and also according to whether
they have more skills in analyzing linguistic or social structures. There
is a large area of overlap between the two and it seems pointless to try
to divide the disciplines more clearly than at present. Much of what
follows in this book could equally well have been written in a textbook
on the sociology of language. On the other hand, there are some issues
which such a textbook ought to include which this one will not, notably
most of what is called ‘macro’ sociology of language, dealing with the
relations between society and languages as wholes. This is an import-
ant area to research from the point of view of sociology (and politics),
since it raises issues such as the effects of multilinguism on econom-
ic development and the possible language policies a government may
adopt. However, such ‘macro’ studies generally throw less light on the
nature of language than the more ‘micro’ ones described in this book,
because the notion of ‘language X’ is usually left unanalyzed. (There
is a good discussion of the relations between sociolinguistics and the
sociology of language in the introduction to Trudgill 1978). For more
information on the sociology of language, see Gibbons 1992 (a brief
overview) and Fasold 1984 (the main textbook)1.

• Functional brain imaging methods
The synchronised activity of millions of nerve cells in the brain creates
minute electromagnetic signals. The electrical component of such
activity can be directly measured by EEG (electroencephalography).
A more recent method, magnetoencephalography (MEG), taps the
magnetic component of this activity. Another group of imaging
methods measures neural activity indirectly by registering
haemodynamic changes in the brain while the subject is performing
a cognitive task. These methods utilise the fact that in normal
conditions there is a close coupling between neuronal activity in a
brain region and its haemodynamics: increased activity is coupled
with increased blood flow, which transports more glucose and oxygen
for the active neural tissue. The methods are functional magnetic
resonance imaging (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and
near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). In what follows, we discuss each
of these methodologies.

begging the question, to which he counters, in Critique of Pure Reason,
that only innate ideas have power. But I say to that, what about
neuronal group selection? And he gives no answer.
In one input mental space, we have the modern philosopher,
making claims. In a separate but related input mental space, we have
Kant, thinking and writing. In neither input space is there a debate.
These two input spaces share frame structure: there is a thinker, who
has claims and musings, a mode of expression, a particular language,
and so on. This shared frame structure constitutes a third space, a
generic space, connected to both input spaces. There is a fourth
space, the blend, which has both the modern philosopher (from
the first input space) and Kant (from the second input space). The
blend additionally recruits the frame of debate, framing Kant and the
modern philosopher as engaged in simultaneous debate, mutually
aware, using a single language to treat a recognized topic. The debate
frame comes up easily in the blend, through pattern completion, since
so much of its structure is already in place in the two inputs. Once the
blend is established, we can operate cognitively within that space,
which allows us to manipulate the various events as an integrated
unit. The debate frame brings with it conventional expressions,
available for our use. We know the connection of the blend to the
input spaces, and the way that structure or inferences developed in
the blend translates back to the input spaces. We work over all four
spaces simultaneously, but the blend gives us structure, integration,
and efficiency not available in the other spaces.

belief that monolingualism is the cognitive-linguistic norm and that
the child’s cognitive system is fragile and designed to cope with only
one language. The monolingual-norm assumption gave rise to the
negative myths surrounding bilingualism: bilingualism has been
blamed for cognitive, social, and emotional damage to children (see
Hakuta, 1986, for review).
Recent research, however, does not support the view that simply
speaking two languages taxes either the cognitive or the linguistic
system. Studies of balanced bilinguals (bilinguals who have roughly
equivalent abilities in the two languages) have suggested that
bilingualism has a positive effect on cognitive development, especially
under certain conditions of additive bilingualism where both
languages are supported academically and emotionally by both the
community and the society at large. The influence of the environment
plays a large role in determining whether the bilingual situation will
be additive or subtractive (Lambert, 1975). Subtractive bilingualism
occurs when the mother tongue is a low-status minority language that
is rapidly being replaced by the high-status majority (and second)
language. There is evidence that suggests that minority-language
Hispanic students in the United States show positive cognitive gains
from bilingualism while they are becoming bilingual; that is ,while they
are receiving academic support from Spanish and learning English
(Hakuta, 1988). The majority of studies on bilingualism to date have
focused on comparing bilinguals to monolinguals, and most measures
used have been derived from and for monolingual samples. Bilingual
performance is thus directly compared to monolingual performance
-bilinguals may be handicapped or cognitively enhanced, depending
on how they measure up to their monolingual counterparts. Such
a design assumes that the cognitive-linguistic experience of the
two populations is comparable. Bilinguals, however, differ from
monolinguals in a very major way: the bilingual child experiences
the world through two languages – two languages which are used in
alternation. For the bilingual, linguistic experience is spread over two
languages: experience is encoded in either of two languages and can be
expressed in both languages, and information representation can be
switched between the languages. The most explicit process in which
this occurs is in translation, the topic of this chapter, Although the
professional translation literature distinguishes between translation
and interpretation, where translation refers to the written modality
124
and interpretation generally refers to the oral modality, we use the
term translation to refer to all modes of reformulating a message
from one language (the source language) into another language (the
target language).
For many bilingual children throughout the world, translation
is an everyday activity, a part of their lives as bilinguals (Grosjean,
1982). Yet translation is a poorly understood phenomenon. In this
chapter, we will first provide a review of literature and concepts
relevant to the study of translation ability. We will then report two
studies that investigate translation ability among language-minority
Puerto Rican children in the United States.

Journalists say that when a dog bites a man that is not news,
but when a man bites a dog that is news. This is the essence of the
language instinct: language conveys news. The streams of words
called “sentences” are not just memory prods, reminding you of man
and man’s best friend and letting you fill in the rest; they tell you who
in fact did what to whom. Thus we get more from most stretches of
language than Woody Allen got from War and Peace, which he read
in two hours after taking speed-reading lessons: “It was about some
Russians.” Language allows us to know how octopuses make love
and how to remove cherry stains and why Tad was heartbroken, and
whether the Red Sox will win the World Series without a good relief
pitcher and how to build an atom bomb in your basement and how
Catherine the Great died, among other things.
When scientists see some apparent magic trick in nature, like
bats homing in on insects in pitch blackness or salmon returning to
breed in their natal stream, they look for the engineering principles
behind it. For bats, the trick turned out to be sonar; for salmon, it was
locking in to a faint scent trail. What is the trick behind the ability of
Homo sapiens to convey that man bites dog?
In fact there is not one trick but two, and they are associated with
the names of two European scholars who wrote in the nineteenth
century. The first principle, articulated by the Swiss linguist Ferdinand
125
de Saussure, is “the arbitrariness of the sign,” the wholly conventional
pairing of a sound with a meaning. The word dog does not look like
a dog, walk like a dog, or woof like a dog, but it means “dog” just
the same. It does so because every English speaker has undergone
an identical act of rote learning in childhood that links the sound
to the meaning. For the price of this standardized memorization,
the members of a language community receive an enormous
benefit: the ability to convey a concept from mind to mind virtually
instantaneously. Sometimes the gunshot marriage between sound
and meaning can be amusing. As Richard Lederer points out in Crazy
English, we drive on a parkway but park in a driveway, there is no
ham in hamburger or bread in sweetbreads, the blueberries are blue
but cranberries are not cran. But think about the “sane” alternative of
depicting a concept so that receivers can apprehend the meaning in
the form. The process is so challenging to the ingenuity, so comically
unreliable, that we have made it into party games like Pictionary and
charades.
The second trick behind the language instinct is captured in
a phrase from Wilhelm Von Humboldt that presaged Chomsky:
language “makes infinite use of finite media.” We know the difference
between the forgettable Dog bites man and the newsworthy Man bites
dog because of the order in which dog, man, and bites are combined.
That is, we use a code to translate between orders of words and
combinations of thoughts. That code, or set of rules, is called a
generative grammar; as I have mentioned, it should not be confused
with the pedagogical and stylistic grammars we encountered in
school.

DISCOURSE SYSTEMS
126
portraits of four of the more common systems of which most of
us are members. We will focus especially on the two main types of
discourse systems: goal-directed or voluntary systems (such as
corporate cultures and function-oriented discourse communities, for
example, those of professional groups like foreign exchange officers,
importers and exporters, teachers, or people who work in travel
industry management) and involuntary discourse systems (such as
generations and gender).
The basic concept of the discourse system which we introduced in
chapter 6 and elaborated in chapter 7 involved four elements: a group
of ideological norms, distinct socialization practices, a regular set of
discourse forms, and a set of assumptions about face relationships
within the discourse system. We took as our example the Utilitarian
discourse system which first began to develop in the seventeenth
century as part of the Utilitarian economic and political philosophy
of the Enlightment. It continues down to the present day to be the
primary discourse system identified with business, both within
European-derived cultures and increasingly throughout international
business and governmental circles. This is a cross-cutting discourse
system which is found widely across cultural boundaries, while at the
same time it does not represent more than a portion of the discourse
within any particular cultural group.
With the example of the Utilitarian discourse system in mind,
we can recall that a discourse system can be defined with four
characteristics:
1. Members will hold a common ideological position and
recognize a set of extra-discourse features which define them as a
group.
2. Socialization is accomplished primarily through these
preferred forms of discourse.
3. A set of preferred forms of discourse serves as banners or
symbols of membership and identity.
4. Face relationships are prescribed for discourse among
members or between members and outsiders1.
WHY IS THIS?
128
“This is a super cool shirt, I love it.”
“This shirt is cool.”
Sometimes comment like these may be extremely stereotypical,
however it is easy for any one to identify who the speaker is. In English
we laugh at these utterances, however in some languages there are
gender-exclusive speech patterns for men and women respectively.
It is not uncommon to see these speech patterns cross-culturally to
linguistically the gender of the speaker. Edward Sapir documented
such occurrences in Yana, an American Indian language, where there
are distinct words that are used for men and women respectively.
Example taken from Janet Holmes, “An Introduction to
Sociolinguistics”
Women Men
ba ba-na "dear"
yaa yaa-na "person"
Sapir found that the male form of speech is used by men when
talking to other men. Female speech is used by women talking to
other women or men, or by men talking to women. Therefore, there
is an exclusive speech pattern for men speaking to men.
There are also some examples of this in Japanese. Example taken
from Nancy Bonvillain’s, “Language, Culture, and Communication”
Women Men
ohiya mizu "water"
onaka hara "stomach"
oisii umai "delicious"
taberu kuu "eat"

TRANSLATION
129
Greece and the Bible translated from Hebrew and Greek. As the
Canadian historian of translation Louis Kelly has observed, ‘Western
Europe owes its civilization to translators’ (1979). Five distinctions
are commonly made when discussing translation, none of which
represent absolute positions, but rather end-points in an appropriate
continuum: 1. Translating and interpreting. Written translation can be
distinguished from oral translation or interpreting, which came first,
as for example in military and diplomatic exchanges. However, because
of its relative permanence and lasting influence on the transmission
of culture and technology, written translation has traditionally been
considered more important. Professional interpreting takes two
forms: simultaneous interpreting (at international conferences, etc.)
and consecutive interpreting (in court, at diplomatic gatherings, in
business transactions, etc.). 2. Word-for-word and free translation.
Languages do not match neatly in the way they form messages.
Depending on the level at which translation equivalence can be
established (word with word, phrase with phrase, word with phrase,
etc.) translations can be more literal (that is, one-to-one at the level
of words), or free (restatement of the message regardless of formal
correspondence). 3. Literary and technical translation. Depending on
the type of discourse translated, a distinction is often made between
literary translation (of aesthetic, imaginative, fictional texts) and
technical translation (of workaday, pragmatic, nonfictional texts).
However, boundary lines between them are sometimes difficult to
draw, as in the translation of the Bible (which is currently available
in over 2,000 languages): for example, the drama of the Book of Job
and the listing of laws in Leviticus. 4. Professional and pedagogical
translation. A distinction can be made between translation as a
vocation or trade (working for a client) and translation as an exercise
in the process of language learning (working for a teacher). It has
been argued that traditional grammar – translation tasks in school
do not constitute a suitable training for translating as such. 5. Human
and machine translation. The high cost of professional translating and
interpreting has encouraged institutional investment in experiments
with large scale electronic translation and dictionary systems.
However, fully automatic translation of high quality still seems to
be a long way off. Translation and publishing. Much of the world’s
publishing depends on translation, although the centrality of the
130
translator’s role is often only minimally indicated in the credits of
particular works. Thousands of translators and interpreters around
the world continue to perform essential tasks in often less-than-
ideal conditions. By the early 1970s, close to half of the world’s book
production was made up of translations, the chief source languages
being English, French, Russian, German, Spanish, and Italian, the chief
target languages German, Russian, Spanish, English, Japanese, and
French. Because of worldwide demand for translation of all kinds, the
20c has been referred to as ‘the age of translation’.

TIME MANAGEMENT
Tick, tick, tick ...No, it’s not the beginning to 60 MINUTES nor is
it the dreaded crocodile coming to get Captain Hook. It’s time moving
on. Time management is a skill few people master, but it is one that
most people need.
Time really can’t be managed. You can’t slow it down or speed
it up or manufacture it. It just IS. Time management is MANAGING
YOURSELF when following some basic time management principles.
Make peace with yourself. Find the schedule that fits you best
and make it work, whether it means working through the night with a
stereo blaring or at 5am in total silence. Schedule your toughest work
during your most productive hours.
Utilize a schedule (with set activities written in), a planner with
sections for different projects (helpful for jotting ideas that pertain
to a specific project), and a Things-To-Do-List where you record each
item that requires your attention. But most importantly, prioritize
your tasks so that you are working on the higher priority issues first.
Lord Chesterfield stated, “If you watch the minutes carefully, the
hours will take care of themselves.” It is most productive if you are
136
bulletins). Об их содержании и периодичности выхода можно уз-
нать из программы конференции: “News Bulletins will be issued
as required. Watch for them at the Registration desks. They will
contain late program changes and special announcements of interest
to the delegates”.
К услугам всех прибывших на конференцию справочное
бюро (information desk), где можно получить исчерпывающую
консультацию по разным вопросам, связанным с обслуживани-
ем участников и проведением ими свободного времени. На это
обращает внимание следующее объявление: «The Information
Desk consults the attendees for all general information including:
entertainment, dining out, sightseeing, transportation, Internet and
(photocopier) facilities».
В здании, где проходит конференция, обычно работает ма-
шинописное бюро (typing pool), почтовое отделение (post office),
транспортное агентство (travel agency). К услугам участников
различные точки питания (cafeterias/snack bars/refreshment
areas). Их информируют о том, где они могут вкусно и относи-
тельно недорого поесть: «Meals will be available at the University
Cafeteria. Excellent meals in good restaurants may be obtained at
reasonable prices».
Как правило, в качестве места проведения конференции
(conference premises/sits) выбирается специально предназна-
ченное для этого здание (conference/congress/convention centre),
отель (hotel) или территория университета (university campus).
Конференция на базе университета (university conference), есте-
ственно, дешевле и для организаторов, и для участников в смыс-
ле их размещения (accommodation/housing): “Accommodation is
available at the university campus in inexpensive student rooms”.
(ceremonial session/opening ceremony). Открывается конферен-
ция, как правило, приветственной речью (welcome address) од-
ного из руководителей конференции. Нередко открытие конфе-
ренции проходит в деловой обстановке. В этом случае предсе-
дательствующий на заседании ограничивается вступительным
словом (introductory/opening remarks).
На пленарных заседаниях (plenary sessions) выступающие
(speakers) представляют соответственно пленарные доклады
(plenary addresses/lectures/talks/papers) и в ряде случаев основ-
ные доклады, определяющие ход всей конференции (keynote
addresses/papers). Основной докладчик (keynote speaker) явля-
ется, как правило, известным ученым, признанным авторитетом
в своей области: «The keynote speaker will be Professor Brown, a
distinguished economist from the University of London, who will talk
about the past, present and future of economics».
Большой аудитории обычно адресуются обзорные
(overview/review papers) и отчетные доклады (reports).
Нередко организационный комитет представляет участ-
никам возможность провести незапланированное заседание
(impromptu meeting), если те высказывают такое пожелание. Об
этом можно узнать, например, из такого объявления: «Groups
wishing to hold impromptu meetings in the evening after the regular
program may ask for room assignment from the Mexican Local
Organizing Committee».
В основном все представленные на конференцию научные
доклады (papers/scientific contributions) можно разделить на
доклады по приглашению (invited/solicited papers) и доклады,
заявленные по инициативе самих участников (contributed/free/
uninvited papers). Последние, как правило, составляют програм-
му параллельно идущих секционных заседаний (concurrent/
parallel sessions), часто называемых симпозиумами (symposia):
“The meeting contains 90 invited papers and 230 contributed papers
organized into 24 symposia”.
138
Отдельные доклады могут носить образовательный (обу-
чающий) характер (tutorial papers): “The program will consist of
invited and contributed papers, as well as workshop sessions. Some
of invited papers will be tutorial in nature”.
Возможен и такой вариант, когда предложенные темы об-
суждаются до конференции в рабочих группах (working parties/
groups), а затем представители этих групп (rapporteurs of
working parties/groups) делают основные доклады (lead papers)
на пленарных заседаниях: «The lead papers presented in plenary
sessions represented experience in several different countries as
well as in international institutions».
обычно руководит председатель заседания (chairman of the
session/session chairman).
Используется и такая форма, как обмен мнениями с уча-
стием ведущих специалистов в присутствии широкой аудито-
рии (panel discussion). Выступающие на этой встрече (panelists/
members of the panel) освещают темы, предлагаемые ее ведущим
(chairman of the panel discussion), и отвечают на вопросы коллег.
Проводятся на научных конференциях и обсуждения за
«круглым столом» (round table discussions/round tables).
В последние время стали пользоваться успехом стендовые
заседания (poster sessions), во время которых авторы-демон-
страторы (presenters) представляют так называемые стендо-
вые сообщения (posters/poster papers/poster presentations).
139
Обычно параллельно с проведением конференции органи-
зуются тематические выставки (exhibitions/exhibits/displays),
в том числе имеющие коммерческий интерес (commercial
exhibitions): “There will be a commercial exhibition of ultrasound
equipment with the conference. Companies interested in exhibiting
should contact the Conference organizer”; устраиваются де-
монстрации оборудования, приборов и материалов (shows/
demonstrations): “The Physics show, where manufacturers present
the latest models of research instruments, apparatus and materials,
will be organized by the American Institute of Physics”.
Гости конференции имеют возможность принять участие
в разного рода профессиональных экскурсиях (professional/
technical excursions), в том числе полевых экскурсиях (field
excursions/trips).

• заглавия реферата;
• библиографического описания реферируемого документа;
• текста реферата.
Заглавием реферата, как правило, служит заглавие рефе-
рируемого документа. Если заглавие документа не отражает ос-
новного смысла содержания этого документа, то дается другое,
более точное (смысловое) заглавие.
В тексте реферата отражаются следующие данные:
• исследуемая проблема, цель, главная мысль и содержание
работы, предмет или цель исследования;
• данные о методике и ее сравнительной точности (при этом
широко известные методы не отмечаются);
• выводы автора и указания возможностей и путей практи-
ческого применения результатов работы;
• ссылка на наличие библиографии и иллюстративного ма-
териала (если их нет в библиографическом описании);
• технология, применяемое оборудование и условия прове-
дения исследования;
• таблицы, схемы, графики, формулы, необходимые для уяс-
нения основного содержания документа;
• необходимые справочные данные (об авторе, истории во-
проса, месте проведения исследования и т. д.).
150
В соответствии со спецификой реферируемого документа в
реферате могут содержаться не все эти данные, а какая-то их часть.
Реферирование – это сложный, творческий процесс, по-
строенный на проникновении в сущность излагаемого. В про-
цессе реферирования происходит не просто сокращение текста,
а существенная переработка содержания, композиции и языка
оригинала:
• в содержании выделяется главное и излагается сокращен-
но, сжато;
• однотипные факты группируются, и им дается обобщенная
характеристика;
• цифровые данные систематизируются и обобщаются;
• если основная мысль сформулирована недостаточно четко,
она должна быть конкретизирована и выделена в реферате;
• в случае необходимости происходит перемещение времен-
ных планов в последовательности от прошлого к будущему;
1) выделение абзацев, содержащих основную информацию;
2) выделение основных мыслей, фактов, положений;
3) озаглавливание выделенных абзацев;
4) составление плана статьи;
5) сокращение текста;

тора;
• вид аннотируемого документа (книга, диссертация, спра-
вочник, статья и т. п.);
• назначение аннотируемого документа;
• задачи, поставленные автором аннотируемого документа;
• метод, используемый автором (при аннотировании науч-
ных и технических публикаций);
• сведения об авторе (авторах);
• характеристику вспомогательных и иллюстративных ма-
териалов, включая библиографию;
ABSTRACT
Because on-line search databases typically contain only abstracts,
it is vital to write a complete but concise description of your work to
entice potential readers into obtaining a copy of the full paper. This
article describes how to write a good computer architecture abstract for
both conference and journal papers. Writers should follow a checklist
consisting of: motivation, problem statement, approach, results, and
conclusions. Following this checklist should increase the chance of
people taking the time to obtain and read your complete paper.
INTRODUCTION
Now that the use of on-line publication databases is prevalent,
writing a really good abstract has become even more important
than it was a decade ago. Abstracts have always served the function
of “selling” your work. But now, instead of merely convincing the
reader to keep reading the rest of the attached paper, an abstract
must convince the reader to leave the comfort of an office and go
hunt down a copy of the article from a library (or worse, obtain one
after a long wait through inter-library loan). In a business context, an
“executive summary” is often the only piece of a report read by the
people who matter; and it should be similar in content if not tone to
a journal paper abstract.
155
the following sections. Each section is typically a single sentence,
although there is room for creativity. In particular, the parts may be
merged or spread among a set of sentences. Use the following as a
checklist for your next abstract:
MOTIVATION
Why do we care about the problem and the results? If the problem
isn’t obviously “interesting” it might be better to put motivation first;
but if your work is incremental progress on a problem that is widely
recognized as important, then it is probably better to put the problem
statement first to indicate which piece of the larger problem you are
breaking off to work on. This section should include the importance
of your work, the difficulty of the area, and the impact it might have
if successful.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
What problem are you trying to solve? What is the scope of your
work (a generalized approach, or for a specific situation)? Be careful
not to use too much jargon. In some cases it is appropriate to put the
problem statement before the motivation, but usually this only works
if most readers already understand why the problem is important.
APPROACH
How did you go about solving or making progress on the
problem? Did you use simulation, analytic models, prototype
construction, or analysis of field data for an actual product? What was
the extent of your work (did you look at one application program or
a hundred programs in twenty different programming languages?)
What important variables did you control, ignore, or measure?
RESULTS
What’s the answer? Specifically, most good computer
architecture papers conclude that something is so many percent
faster, cheaper, smaller, or otherwise better than something else. Put
the result there, in numbers. Avoid vague, hand-waving results such
as “very”, “small”, or “significant.” If you must be vague, you are only
given license to do so when you can talk about orders-of-magnitude
improvement. There is a tension here in that you should not provide
156
numbers that can be easily misinterpreted, but on the other hand you
don’t have room for all the caveats.
CONCLUSIONS
What are the implications of your answer? Is it going to change
the world (unlikely), be significant “win”, be a nice hack, or simply
serve as a road sign indicating that this path is a waste of time (all of
the previous results are useful). Are your results general, potentially
generalizable, or specific to a particular case?
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
An abstract must be a fully self-contained, capsule description
of the paper. It can’t assume (or attempt to provoke) the reader into
flipping through looking for an explanation of what is meant by some
vague statement. It must make sense all by itself. Some points to
consider include:
Meet the word count limitation. If your abstract runs too long,
either it will be rejected or someone will take a chainsaw to it to get
it down to size. Your purposes will be better served by doing the
difficult task of cutting yourself, rather than leaving it to someone
else who might be more interested in meeting size restrictions than
in presenting your efforts in the best possible manner. An abstract
word limit of 150 to 200 words is common.
Any major restrictions or limitations on the results should be
stated if only by using “weasel-words” such as “might”, “could”, “may”,
and “seem’.
Think of a half-dozen search phrases and keywords that people
looking for your work might use. Be sure that those exact phrases
appear in your abstract, so that they will turn up at the top of a search
result listing.
Usually the context of a paper is set by the publication it appears
in (for example, IEEE Computer magazine’s articles are generally
about computer technology).
But, if your paper appears in a somewhat untraditional venue,
be sure to introduce in the problem statement the domain or topic
area that it is really applicable to.
Some publications request “keywords”. These have two
purposes. They are used to facilitate keyword index searches, which
157
are greatly reduced in importance now that on-line abstract text
searching is commonly used. However, they are also used to assign
papers to review committees or editors, which can be extremely
important to your fate. So make sure that the keywords you pick make
assigning your paper to a review category obvious (for example, if
there is a list of conference topics, use your chosen topic area as one
of the keyword tuples).
CONCLUSION
Writing an efficient abstract is hard work, but will repay you
with increased impact on the world by enticing people to read your
publications. Make sure that all the components of a good abstract
are included in the next one you write.

which movements transform social structures and the constraints’
movements face when they try to do so. The time period studied in
this dissertation includes the expansion of voting rights and gains
in black political power, the desegregation of public schools and the
emergence of white-flight academies, and the rise and fall of federal
anti-poverty programs. I use two major research strategies: (1) a
quantitative analysis of county-level data and (2) three case studies.
Data have been collected from archives, interviews, newspapers and
published reports. This dissertation challenges the argument that
movements are inconsequential. Indeed, some view federal agencies,
courts, political parties, or economic elites as the agents driving
institutional change. Typically these groups acted in response to
movement demands and the leverage brought to bear by the civil
rights movement. The Mississippi movement attempted to forge
independent structures for sustaining challenges to local inequities
and injustices. By propelling change in an array of local institutions,
movement infrastructures had enduring legacy in Mississippi.

This code is shown to be second-order convergent and to handle
highly non-linear spacetimes. In particular, we have shown that the
code can handle spacetimes whose radiation is equivalent to a galaxy
converting its whole mass into gravitational radiation in one second.
We further use the characteristic formulation to treat the region close
to the singularity in black hole spacetimes. The code carefully excises
a region surrounding the singularity and accurately evolves generic
black hole spacetimes with apparently unlimited stability.

virtue of its very existence (2). The construction of any “institution”
implies that communication is taking place between various people
for a common purpose. However, the issue of understanding the
elements and processes of communication within the system is
especially important when discussing the function of education; as
Cazden points out, “while other institutions such as hospitals serve
their clients in non-linguistic ways, the basic purpose of school is
achieved through communication” (2).
Cazden goes on to discuss three general features and functions
of language which “make communication so central” in schools (2–3).
To begin with, language transmits curriculum; despite the wealth of
technological advancements available for presenting information in
the classroom, spoken language remains the primary medium for
providing instruction and demonstrating what has been learned.
Language is used to initiate, monitor, adjust, and evaluate cognitive
processes.
Secondly, language communicates control; classrooms are
“crowded human environments” in which one person – namely the
teacher – is responsible for preventing and coping with disruptions,
as well as and encouraging and enhancing learning processes
(Cazden 2-3). While naturally occurring crowded environments
are characterized by numerous “simultaneous autonomous
conversations” (Cazden 2), the classroom situation relies on language
rights and mores – usually created by the institution and enforced by
the teacher – to establish and maintain social relationships.
Finally, language reflects personal identity; language is such an
integral part of culture and socialization that students experience the
sensation of vulnerability when asked to put themselves and their
speech “on the line,” so to speak, in front of peers and superiors. School
is often the first place where children are expected to communicate
independently (without help from parents) and publicly (in a forum
where their performance or competence may be judged by outsiders).
The increasing prevalence of diverse linguistic backgrounds and
levels or types of cultural literacy combined in one classroom only
further complicates the matter.
Additionally, teachers, like students, bring personal perspectives
and anxieties with them in their classroom talk. These issues of
communication are brought to the forefront, as the primary way
162
in which speakers express their identity and attitudes within the
classroom setting is through language.
Linguistic communication in the classroom serves multiple
functions. Teachers must make themselves aware of the language
patterns in their classrooms and the function of those patterns of
discourse in the educational process. Cazden notes that “the three-
part sequence of teacher initiation, student response, teacher
evaluation (IRE) is the most common pattern of classroom discourse
at all grade levels,” and that the teacher usually initiates the interaction
using question form (29). This pattern of questioning has some very
powerful implications in terms of both lesson content and classroom
structure.
The IRE structure of discourse sets up an imbalance of power
in a number of ways. Most obviously, all interactions are teacher
initiated; this sends a message to the students that teachers have the
right to speak at any time, while students must wait to be engaged and
recognized by the teacher. Students are subordinate to the teacher
in the classroom, and this is made clear by the cycle of talk which
mandates that they will participate in strict accordance with the
pattern established by the teacher – namely they will speak only when
invited to respond to the teacher’s question (Dillon 13). In addition
to setting up a painfully inequitable index of speech rights, this IRE
pattern communicates that the teacher decides what knowledge is
valuable and at what pace the lesson should move; students are cut
off from raising related issues or personal concerns or even difficulty
in processing previous information because the model for language
interaction focuses on teacher priorities and actions rather than
making room for student needs and insights.
This brings us to the problem of reinforcing that every question
has a “correct answer” in the context of the classroom discourse.
The evaluation element suggests that each answer can and will
be assessed as “right” or “wrong.” Because the teacher is the only
individual in the classroom given the power to evaluate responses, the
structure assumes that the teacher already knows the answers to the
questions he or she is asking, and that the teacher is only interested
in the limited scope of information which can be accounted for by the
question used to initiate. This failure to make room for any in-depth
exploration or additional insight communicates to the students a
163
very “simplistic view of fields of knowledge [and] of the enterprise of
study” (Lukinsky and Schachter).
The kind of learning which lends itself to IRE patterns of
instruction is limited to lower cognitive level processes which
stress “recall of information,” and questions aimed at producing
accurate recall or simple identification “do little to promote any real
thinking” (Lukinsky and Schachter). Based on Bloom’s taxonomy,
these knowledge questions are of only minimal value, and should be
supplemented by activities which engage more intermediate skills
of comprehension and application, as well as the higher cognitive
processes of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation (Brophy and Good).
Unfortunately, the IRE model which breaks down into a search for
“the answer” does not encourage students to volunteer new ideas, to
connect relative experiences, to express critical viewpoints, or to take
any risks which might lead to a more comprehensive understanding
of the concepts being taught. Lukinsky and Schachter point out that,
despite the focus on higher level questioning motivated by Norris
Sanders’ Classroom Questions and subsequent publications over
the past thirty years, “Current research confirms that teachers still
mainly ask questions at the lower level of the taxonomy.”
If teachers establish good patterns of teaching, good patterns of
questioning will develop within those patterns because the elements
which distinguish effective question are often the same characteristics
of effective direct instruction. These characteristics are adapted from
Groisser’s work in 1964: 1) clear, 2) purposeful, 3) brief, 4) natural
and adapted to the level of the class, 5) sequenced, and 6) thought
provoking (Brophy and Good 373). If teachers consistently present
information to students in this fashion and check for understanding
with a focus on the same criteria, the questioning and learning
processes will be more valuable to the student than if they rely
on “cognitive level” labels. While this will serve as an outline for
maintaining quality content, additional adaptations must be made
so that the students will have an opportunity to benefit from this
superior content. Cazden suggests that perhaps the most important
change is an increase in wait time for student responses (60-61).
Cazden cites research by Rowe (1974, 1986), as do Brophy and
Good, that teachers typically wait one second or less for students
to start a reply to their question before calling on another student
164
or supplying information related to the question themselves (60).
Interestingly, in studies where teachers were asked to incorporate
longer than typical wait times, the action led to “more active
participation in lessons by a larger percentage of the students”
(Brophy and Good 377). Furthermore, Brophy and Good find that
“subsequent research has verified that increasing wait time leads
to longer and higher-quality student responses and participation by
a greater number of students” (377). While this is a positive trend
toward focusing on student participation and more open-ended
answers, it still does not compensate for the social implications of the
IRE structure in which teachers are initiating learning, students are
responding to the teacher as an authority, and teachers are evaluating
(rather than investigating or further encouraging) student responses.
Students need to feel that the classroom is a safe environment
which welcomes their inquiry and supports the entire process of
learning, and not just the resulting bits of knowledge which constitute
“the right answer.” The imbalance of power inherent in the IRE model
is not conducive to this feeling (Dillon 13-17). Also, students need
to feel that their own knowledge is as valuable as the knowledge
possessed by the teacher. This is not to say that students should be
encouraged to perpetuate uneducated misconceptions or should be
rewarded for inaccurate information; however, students must be
allowed to express their ideas by initiating comments and clarify
confusion by initiating questions. Also, students should not feel that
they will be penalized for “the wrong answer” during the learning
process, or they will never gain the confidence to actively participate
in the search for gaining understanding. Besides helping students
to cultivate their own inquiries and value their own knowledge,
teachers have a responsibility to teach students to value each others
contributions.
Educators who use cooperative learning practices in addition
to direct instruction stress to students that listening and responding
to each other requires the same respect and interest as listening and
responding to teachers. However, what about the way teachers react to
their students? Traditional teacher reaction to students participation
is evaluative – positive, negative, or indifferent – but is that really
affording students the respect they deserve? A trend in replacing
evaluative comments which judge with responsive comments which
165
respect is necessary to establish more effective patterns of discourse.
Students should feel that their input is interesting or important or
related or novel – not merely right or wrong. The IRE model does
not lend itself to this type of response, but the classroom discussion
model does. It is important to validate the act of input, not just the
information which is shared. Students need to know that effective
participation is as valid a success as “getting the right answer” in order
for students to remain motivated to participate in the discussion.
